"My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread

I got mine back yesterday after it RRoD'd two weeks ago. Is it normal for them to replace or otherwise fix the DVD drive? It's quite a bit less noisy now, and doesn't make some of the horrible sounds that it used to make.
Are you sure you got the same system you sent?

My Elite has just died. MFR Date: 2007-06-25 (not even a year old!)

My launch 360 lived much longer.

Fucking pissed cos NG2 next week too. Ah well at least my PS3 still works for MGS4.

EDIT: My 360 just started working again for no apparent reason. Ah well will live with it a little longer until the RROD inevitably returns.

My xbox 360, got the uplayable disc error, for every disc, and dvd. I poped the thing open, and fixed that stupid magnet. Works like a brand new xbox.

My Elite Zephyr (the one with additional heatsink) died again sigh ~~ Wanted to download the Ninja Gaiden demo, but before I could put the Ethernet cable into the 360, it just RROD on me.

Damnit !!!!! I'm glad I never ban bet my account to the reliability of this console.

Alright, my Zombie 360 is finally dead. Passed away last night while watching a DVD of all things.

Last time my 360 died, I called them to setup the repair. Which way is quicker/better, calling or using the website?

My Elite just kicked the bucket. Had it for 9 months now.. I haven't had any problems, 'til tonight. I have been getting the "unreadable disc" error. All of my discs are not damaged in any way.

This would be my 3rd 360 death.

I didn't know you could process a repair on their website.. I thought you had to call.

That's what mine has done recently. I've gotten a couple of RROD's recently, but it won't stay dead... this is bs.

Just did that. Much easier than calling India.
It's good to know that the website can be used, my cousins machine croaked a few days ago yet 2 days before it was playing guitar hero 3 without problems at all...

Yep, just got the email saying my shipping box is on its way.

I wish MS didn't put these cheapo DVD drives in their system. during my Google search I learn its a big problem... something about the magnet getting stuck in the drive. Mainly Hitachi drives.

hey guys I have a question for you. I got the 360 hd dvd drive and I plugged it in my pc, everything showed up but when I popped in an hd dvd KING KONG it made a few clicks and thats it never bothered to read anything beyond that so I went back to Futureshop and got a replacement. It worked perfect for one day and now it showed up on the USB Controllers in the Device Manager but the actual drive does not show up in the explorer. Has anyone had any problems like that ? This one seemed to work very well for the one day that it did work.

Wow, it really seems like a rash of launch Elites are dying at the same time. Almost as if they were designed to fail at the same time. You can add my Elite to the list that received the RROD. I called Monday, got my coffin on Thursday and shipped it back out the same day. They should have it on Monday.

Weird thing is that I know it didn't overheat. It has to be something else.

Anybody know what they doing to repair them now? Are they just replacing them with other systems or are they repairing them by adding a heatsink, using cooler chips, etc?

I turned on my 360 to find the 3 red lights on Wednesday and rang up the customer service line 15 minutes later at about 6pm, the lady on the phone was of polite manner and after taking me through some questions (what colour is the powerbrick light (I answered green), and does it have 3rl with the HDD) she declared this good enough for a repair and then told me to put it in a brown box (I thought they sent them to you?) and put the UPS sticker that they send to you on it - this all took about 10 minutes max. The day after at about 11am a UPS guy comes with the sticker asking to pick up my 360 in its box, I explain that it's been less than 20 hours since I rang customer support and that I haven't got a box ready yet. So today (Friday) since I have been really busy since Wednesday, got round to getting a suitable box and packing it up with bubble-wrap etc and put the sticker on, I'll update when I ring for the UPS guy to come and when it comes back.

Very good service so far though from Microsoft.

Yikes, I didn't look at the color of my powerbrick when it died, is it supposed to be green when it gets 3 RRoD.
So they also stopped sending boxes as well?

Well, another 360 doomed by the red lights. This one only made it to 9 months(compared to a year plus launch console). I have a BestBuy warranty, but I doubt I will trade it in for another 360. Debating whether to use towards a ps3 or something else.

When my first 360 went down, they wouldn't let me have the harddrive. Even though I told them to take the new harddrive from the replacement 360.

They won't let you keep the hard drive? Will they not repair it at all if you send one without the HD?

btw could someone direct me to the site to get mine repaired, I'm not seeing it at xbox.com

Fuck balls, I bought my 360 on like Feb. 2006. I'm out of the warrenty range now?

So I guess I will have to pay up to get mine repaired, how much is it?

I thought it was three years. That might be explicitly for the RRoD/3-red.

FTWer said:
oh you mean the 3 RRoD has a separate warrenty from the one I posted?

Yes. Mine was bought in Nov '06, it RRODed last month. Website said Out of Warranty same as yours but when you do a repair request on the website it specifically asks if you received 3 red rings, if you say yes then your good. I received mine back Monday and now have a 3 month warranty on the site.

I got one of the first 360s with HDMI (around August of last year I believe) and it RRoD'd this morning.

I'm probably going to get a cooling system for it once it returns so is there an "official" one that NeoGAF uses?

Mine just popped three red rings.

PAL launch day machine and its finally died. Doh! Booted to spinny xbox logo and it freezes, then the lights! Du du duuuuh!

I wouldn't put too much stock on that screen. All 4 of my systems showed that on my screen in the past, and all four have come back free of charge.

The last one that I have sent in had Hana die on me, I sent it in as a RROD. The same unit was sent back repaired and a new heat sink installed as well.

From Psychotext...

A big thanks to PSWii60 for posting these numbers for me while I'm on
my enforced holiday... =)

Usual Disclaimer: These numbers wont match up to the list post
simply because unless I could tell when your 360 died / was replaced,
you weren't included in the figures. That's basically anyone that just
posted to say that their 360 died last year some time or they've had x
dead 360s and gave no more information. Also, if you posted to say your
360 was acting up and never came back to confirm its death / shipment /
getting a new one... you aren't included either.

Don't forget that NPD US numbers are simply included to give a rough
idea of how many 360s are out there for each particular month.

6fzk3o.png

In the figures so far are 1246 dead / replaced 360s, 7 of which were
falcon models
.

This Month

RRoD: 25
Drive: 7
Video: 4
Other Red Light: 2
Checkerboard: 1

3 of the 9 refurb failures were due to RRoD.

Overall Falcon Issues
Drive: 4 (Oddly all present at purchase)
Video: 2 (Image stops displaying)
RRoD: 1 (Awaiting confirmation, post just says "died")

I was expecting a bit of an increase this month thanks to GTAIV and the
weather starting to get hotter though it doesn't appear to have had
any effect. Will be interesting to see if this sort of rate holds up
through the summer.

The day I see a Falcon RROD I will lose all hope on Microsoft. My Falcon has gotten a tad bit nosier, may be the high temperatures, but it all seems.. good, so far. Not even a single crash!

so im pretty sure my 360 just died, and in the process destroyed my GTA4 disc, stratching the fuck out of it. Any chance MS will replace the game along with the system?

Does MS publish GTA4?
There's your answer.

Oh yeah... my 17-month old console stopped reading discs a couple weeks ago. It's off being exchanged at the moment. :D

My Falcon Elite died at the end of March... I bought it the first week of Feb. It was manufactured Dec. 07. And yeah, it was my 5th 360 and I paid the difference to get a falcon elite because I was tired of replacing them. Needless to say, I have lost a lot of hope in MS and PS3 is my primary console by default now. The only games I'm probably gonna buy for 360 are the real exclusives (the only ones I can think of is NG2 and Too Human) -- all the rest are either multiplatform or inevitably make their way to PC (which tend to be the "better" versions anyway.)

RRoD was ultimately the cause of replacement, but there were quite a few E74 errors and non-booting issues in the two weeks leading up to the RRoD. Once it hit RRoD, though, there was absolutely no getting it going again.

My 360 turns on fine, and i see the green light and everything, but the video and audio doesn't work at all. Is it just the cables that are broken? I was playing Worms and the colors got all weird and so I turned it off and back on and now there is no video or audio. Any fix?

I'm sorry, but I don't want to read all the posts in this thread to find an answer to this: when you get the RRoD, do you need to provide your receipt upon sending it back or just the serial #? I heard anecdotal evidence from someone that they only needed to provide the serial #. I'm asking because I'm strongly thinking about buying a used 360 and don't fear getting the RRoD so much as I do having a system not being covered by the policy.

Thanks.

While you only need your console serial number to qualify for 3RL coverage (at least until November 2008), the dilemma with your proposal is that you're planning to purchase a system second-hand. Both the standard 1-year manufacturer's warranty and the 3-year coverage for 3RL failure only cover the original purchaser of the console.

Unless you buy a used console that boasts a service contract that is transferred over to your name, I'm afraid you're out of l--- :lol

Sorry I couldn't finish that with a straight face. Yeah, just call up and give 'em your serial number.

Ok sorry once again. I don't want to read the entire thread. I'm too cross right now.

I was playing GTAIV on my 360 tonight and the drive started making horrible grinding and scratching noises. I first I thought it was the game (like I had something stuck on my car) but I soon realized, to my horror, otherwise.

Now my GTA disc is scratched to hell and my 360 won't read any disc I put in it. It says unreadable disc to everything I put in.

Is this a common problem? When I call customer service in the morning are they going to know what I am talking about?

Say goodbye to my 3rd fucking xbox.

It's fairly common. I have an Oblivion and Gears of War disc that a week-old 360 scratched to hell. Goodluck with your call to customer support. Microsoft does not recognize it as a known issue.

holy shit! at last, my 360 (june 2006 build date, purchased may 2007) finally died, the damn thing took a beating tho, played it hard since i got it, every night practically and sometimes hours on end at the weekends, now i get my new "unhackable" liteon drive, and new fancy clothing for my gpu :D

XBOX 360 '10-05-07 - 18-06-08' - Rest easy sweet prince, for you shall rise again* to spoil me with yet more amazing games.

* in 2 - 3 weeks

For some reason when I turn on my 360, no image is displayed, but when I flip the switch to 480p then back to hi def, the image then works fine.

Is this a sign that my refurb is dying? Since its still under warrinty, can I just send it in or do I have to wait till it dies?

I believe that's deserving of it's own thread, Microsoft shipping back reliable refurbished consoles is pretty big news.

Well, we have yet to see how reliable Opus is. There seem to be a few Falcon failures here and there, so it's still a question in my mind as to whether Opus will finally get people off the repair carousel. I just wish Jasper would hurry up and get here, as I'd prefer the cooler chips.

I'm apparently screwed out of my extended warranty; I bought it through the card that came in the box, and they charged our credit card (this was back in Feb 07). So now our disc drive started dying a couple months ago where basically sometimes games fail the initial load (it reads games as DVDs), but once you get it to boot it's fine, although you can sometimes hear the drive working incredibly hard. So anyway they have NO record of us purchasing the warranty. I've sent in a copy of the fucking bank statement that clearly states "MICROSOFT EXT WARRANTY" and the amount, I've been through 3 different supervisors, including the last one who is apparently their last resort who has gotten back in touch with me several times, and they swear they have no record of our credit card ever being charged for anything there. The supervisor just did a 4th (?) callback to me and said basically there's nothing more they can do, aside from sending in another copy of the bank statement, because they somehow lost the last one even though it went registered mail and I can prove they sent it. So I'm probably out the $50 for the warranty, and fixing the system would cost $99.

At this point if the thing dies completely I don't even know if I care enough to replace the system or pay to have it fixed, I'm so completely tired of the bullshit. I could probably sell the system to someone at work for $100 (to cover the repair costs) and then buy an arcade unit and just slap the HDD in there which would be convenient to get HDMI, but I shouldn't even have to be considering that as an option. I'm almost considering trying to ride the system out through the end of the year; now that I have a PS3 (that works fine!), if it can last through Tales of Vesperia, GoW 2, Viva 2, and maybe Fable 2, I don't think there's anything I really care about after that. I can say for sure I'm not picking up the next MS system until way, waaaaay after launch, and this coming from someone who has had PS1s and PS2s die on me.

You know... I wonder if its possible for you to retract that charge from your credit card company and THEY can duke it out with them? xD
