"My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread

Good work Microsoft! I had a launch unit that lasted until March of this year. The replacement just died and won't relinquish my Ninja Gaiden 2 (which I'd been able to play for about 1 hour). I also had purchased a movie and had not begun to watch it (thus ruining date night at the Martin household). There's probably no chance in hell they'll give me my freaking movie back, is there? It's bound to be expired by the time my system returns.

My Elite just kicked the bucket. Had it for 9 months now.. I haven't had any problems, 'til tonight. I have been getting the "unreadable disc" error. All of my discs are not damaged in any way.

This would be my 3rd 360 death.

Make that 4 deaths

I just had my 360 4 days after receiving it from the repair center when today it started making this horrible grinding noise when loading a game or dvd... Also when opening the tray the disc is still spinning ON THE TRAY! This is damaging my discs. MS will be shipping a return box tomorrow.

I'm apparently screwed out of my extended warranty; I bought it through the card that came in the box, and they charged our credit card (this was back in Feb 07). So now our disc drive started dying a couple months ago where basically sometimes games fail the initial load (it reads games as DVDs), but once you get it to boot it's fine, although you can sometimes hear the drive working incredibly hard. So anyway they have NO record of us purchasing the warranty. I've sent in a copy of the fucking bank statement that clearly states "MICROSOFT EXT WARRANTY" and the amount, I've been through 3 different supervisors, including the last one who is apparently their last resort who has gotten back in touch with me several times, and they swear they have no record of our credit card ever being charged for anything there. The supervisor just did a 4th (?) callback to me and said basically there's nothing more they can do, aside from sending in another copy of the bank statement, because they somehow lost the last one even though it went registered mail and I can prove they sent it. So I'm probably out the $50 for the warranty, and fixing the system would cost $99.

At this point if the thing dies completely I don't even know if I care enough to replace the system or pay to have it fixed, I'm so completely tired of the bullshit. I could probably sell the system to someone at work for $100 (to cover the repair costs) and then buy an arcade unit and just slap the HDD in there which would be convenient to get HDMI, but I shouldn't even have to be considering that as an option. I'm almost considering trying to ride the system out through the end of the year; now that I have a PS3 (that works fine!), if it can last through Tales of Vesperia, GoW 2, Viva 2, and maybe Fable 2, I don't think there's anything I really care about after that. I can say for sure I'm not picking up the next MS system until way, waaaaay after launch, and this coming from someone who has had PS1s and PS2s die on me.

i had the same shit happen to me. after i filed a BBB complaint and sent in my bank statement a second time it was finally taken care of.

here's my thread of angry ranting on the issue

So my friend's second Elite bit the dust this past weekend.

He'd only had this one since maybe March; and he'd rarely played it as he's been doing some PC gaming lately.

He is PISSED. Swearing off console gaming altogether, now. Says once he gets a new/refurb box back from MS, he's putting the bitch up on eBay.

Nice going, MS. The failure rate on these things must be near 100%.

My brother in laws just bit the dust yesterday after 10 minutes of Guitar Hero 3. Luckily, he had an extended warranty from Best Buy that was still good. His console was manufactured Nov. 2007.

My 3rd (2nd replacement) 360's DVD drive is going. It doesn't open when it's vertical and it won't close on the first try via the eject button or the dashboard.

It also stops reading the disc mid-game during GTA4 and Mass Effect, causing the dirty disc error. Pretty obvious since the system quiets down when the disc isn't spinning.

I can't seem to ever get the 'request a new repair' thing to work for me, it keeps giving me an error after I submit the page where I put the reason for the repair. The URL says this: "https://service.xbox.com/contactsupport.aspx?alert=problem&action=missing_sku#refocus"

Boo-urns.

So if I wanted to buy a 360 in the near future, would it be better to look for a Falcon unit? (Unless that's all that's out there now) If so, how does one confirm which one is a Falcon unit? Isn't it "175W" at the end on some sticker? Can anyone confirm this for me?

Woohoo! I'm finally LttP - had my first RRoD today. I feel so proud of my little 360. It's finally caught up with the rest of them. Microsoft are sending out a return label right now, so I should be 360less for a few weeks. And just after I bought the HDDVD add-on as well. :( Ah well, hopefully the new unit will be able to read my Lost Odyssey discs...

If MS screw up on the repair/replacement, perhaps it's time to go for an Arcade unit...

I was playing a bit of DMC4 on my 360 and suddenly the entire machine stopped and started blinking rrod. Is there any chance this was just a random crash, or should I start preparing for my 360's funeral?

Edit: False alarm! Power went out for a split second around the time my 360 crashed, so I'm guessing that was the cause.

screwing with the psu can cause it to light up red, i stood on my power cable one and it did that

Hooray! I joined the club.

I had a launch unit (manufactured Oct '05 baby!) and it finally happened. Tried to pop in GTA and it froze/crashed. Tried to pop in Rock Band - that crashed too. For a while there were no RRoDs, just games "starting up" then the unit freezing.

Then it finally RRoDed.

I'm actually proud of the little guy, he lasted quite a while longer than I expected - and despite Microsoft's "uber cool guy" robot voice on their customer service line... seems like its going to be a smooth process getting everything fixed.

Here's hoping I'm not started to get on the repair carousel.

Chalk me up as a new club member as well, my pal launch unit just decided to rrod on me. I wouldn't have minded if it had happend a week ago but I haven't touched it since mgs4 was released so I would have had something to take my mind off it if it had given out a lititle earlier! Just arranged my repair with ms customer suppoort (2-3 weeks, boohoo) but I'm trying to look on the bright side and hoping I'll score myself an hdmi enabled unit.

My console has (had) lasted almost as long as my relationship with my fiance, I hope it isn't some sort of sign :/

My third 360, RROD. This one was one of the early HDMI units bought in September '07 or so. Lovely. If Bungie would just go multiplatform I would forget about the 360 altogether.

I thought I was the exception. I thought I was in the clear.

I had my 360 since December 06. While it had occasional freezing, and once in a while got the disc unreadable errors, for the most part it worked great. GTA4 came a long and it begun a slow slide to death. When I first got the game it froze 3 times before the first segment loaded. I kept restarting it and it finally worked. I don't play that often but I noticed over the past few weeks it started freezing more and more. Usually in the first minute after the game loads. Today it finally clonked out. It froze twice on me so I decided to try Aegis Wing to see if it was just a disc problem. It locked up on the first level after about 30 seconds. I restarted it again and it froze before it even loaded the dashboard and I was greeted with the flashing red lights. I already filed a repair request. Poor thing, I thought it was one of the good ones.

I will be leaving on vacation in about 3 weeks. I hope to have it back by then. If not, does anyone know if they require a signature or just leave it at the door? If they just leave it at the door I can have my neighbors pick it up and hold it until I return. Thanks.

I got mine back within a month or so, and that's including me being lazy about setting up a UPS pickup. My RROD console also had the warranty void (custom fan/light) and they didn't say anything about it, yet. I doubt they'd bill me at this point.

I have a "core" launch Xbox 360 that has not RROD'd or anything which I have found quite amazing due to the failure rate or most boxes. About 2 weeks ago my box stopped recognizing any type of disc, it would just say open tray even though I did have a disc in the unit. I called up Microsoft and after all the bullshit was said and done they wanted me to throw away a hundred dollars and have it sent it. I told them to fuck off and hung the phone up. I decided to open the 360 up completely and also the disk drive when I noticed the ribbon that goes to the laser was hitting disc's and not letting them spin so I just tucked that bad boy back a little bit and now I still have a fully working core launch Xbox 360! YAY.

Clearly there's something wrong with the Xbox 360 faillure rate, but, as I said, nine is pretty crazy.

Oh I don't disagree. Trust me, I think it's beyond crazy. Like I said in the article, I had very very high hopes after the console was used to 2x 48 hour Halo 3 marathons. It ran with no problem through all of that. I figured I had the last one I'd need. But, alas, no.

My launch 360 is freezing whenever I play any game disc. Here is a picture of what I'm getting. .
The beginning of the end for you.
Just keep running software and eventually the thing with RROD, load a few demos or something if you think it's disc based (but it isn't), the connection to GPU is pretty much fooked for you at this point so I'd just start cycling the machine to try and force the 3rlod so you can begin the lovely journey of endless Microsoft refurbs.

Not wanting to make a new thread, hopefully some people can help me here. I have begun to seriously think about getting a X360 soon due to some extra disposable income, been wanting one for a while but with having a PSwii, there hasn't been a huge hole. Anyways, reading through some recent responses here has not been too encouraging, but on the other hand, people come to this thread to post about their X360 breaking, not that theirs is working.

So just trying to get an idea of the state of the X360 right now; how reliable are they now? What is the current chipset, and when does the next chipset supposedly come out? What are the advantages to whatever the next chipset is, and should I wait for that one regardless?

Thanks for the input!

I just wanted to say I got my Elite in late august and haven't had a problem yet. I play the shit out of it, sometimes rediculous stuff like 12-14 hours of passing back and forth from game to game. I've put it through the paces, with no problems... I have mine vertical, sitting ontop of my old Xbox, powerbrick elevated from the ground... I dust by whiping with my hand and probably pushing more dust into the console. I dunno, I had some flashing lights once when the power went out, and another time when the AV slipped out a little, besides that I can't kill this thing. I hope it stays this way.

I bought my girlfriend a 360 last year, but it was never meant for that. I really just wanted a reason to have a backup 360 in case mine died
for the 3rd time

I'm thinking of getting a 360 and figured this was the best place to ask, do falcons only come from team FDOU? If not, has anyone seen falcons in team CSON 360's? CSON 360's are the only one's I can find in my area.

MY Falcon is CSON. Just buy a 360 and be happy!

I bought a Wii, 'cus I'm not even gonna give M$ a chance after this one. :lol

Finally called in to get my second one sent back today. The "Australian" (outsourced to I'm guessing India of course), support is terrible.

I had to jump through all the hoops as I did the first time. Like the first time they initially refused to send me a box! I had to go through a supervisor again.

The wait for the box begins!

At this point as long as you get a new one (falcon or better) the 360 is about as reliable as any of the other consoles (at least from the looks of things of deaths related in this thread).
Just make sure you get one that says 175watts and you should be set, though finding one not 175 watts would be difficult now.

my falcon xbox (10-17-07) just died this morning.

It gave me first the 3 lights but now only wants to give me the one light. I think its taunting me:lol

i've went through 3 360's already:

-1 RLoD KO via RR6
-the underreported but hilarious "Please insert this [brand new working] disc into an Xbox 360 console"
-and one that was just a randomly freezing dud which I switched within a month

Still waiting for a reliable model...and a reasonable conclusion to the confusion about the DRM issues (not being able to play your XBLA games, as the games you purchased on your original console won't work offline with a replacement console). I'm sure it's already been mentioned, but it's been almost two years without a real response.
Tacky to quote myself, but 1 year later...

-2 RRoDs
-2 "Please Insert This Disc Into An Xbox 360 Console"s
-2 returned-within-30-days duds

I also dealt with MS Customer Service for the first time, and surprisingly, it was great.

Fedex, not so much.

Always request UPS to ship!

I live next door to Fedex, ironically.

So other than my own personal hardware failure in March I haven't heard much about 360 failings. Things were good and then all of a sudden this month seems to be seeing a peak. I don't know if its the summer heat or what, but I'm hearing a lot of failure talk lately both online and from my own friends.

Be careful people O_o.

I just lost my 3rd 360 to RROD last week. MS sent out the new box with overnight shipping via Fedex because it's my 3rd unit to kick the bucket since launch. This last one lasted nearly two years so I'm hoping they send me back new and improved hardware this time around.

I just got my box back today. Its a Benq equip 360 made last month! Yes, this time they sent me a new one.

Those Hitachi drives are the Thompson of this generation.

From Mr Psychotext (who'll be back later this month!! Woohoo!!)...

A big thanks to PSWii60 for posting these numbers for me while I'm on my enforced holiday... =)

Usual Disclaimer: These numbers wont match up to the list post simply because unless I could tell when your 360 died / was replaced, you weren't included in the figures. That's basically anyone that just posted to say that their 360 died last year some time or they've had x dead 360s and gave no more information. Also, if you posted to say your 360 was acting up and never came back to confirm its death / shipment / getting a new one... you aren't included either.

Don't forget that NPD US numbers are simply included to give a rough idea of how many 360s are out there for each particular month.

wgxe6x.png

In the figures so far are 1268 dead / replaced 360s, 7 of which were falcon models.

This Month

RRoD: 16
Drive: 5

3 of the 6 refurb failures were due to RRoD.

Overall Falcon Issues
Drive: 4 (Oddly all present at purchase)
Video: 2 (Image stops displaying)
RRoD: 1

It would appear the Microsoft faries have been sprinkling magic dust around... either to make people forget to post about their dead 360s or to fix some of the dying ones on the sly! These are the lowest numbers (by quite some margin) since I started doing the statistics. Perhaps the refurb quality is getting better, perhaps the weakest of the herd has already been killed off. Time will tell.

Hey Kids!

looks like my Falcon 360, which I've had since about Jan.08 or so, has died!
The Culprit?

Error 74 - General Hardware failure

It's still under warranty so it's covered but I have to provide the box, they'll only give me the UPS mailer

.....seriously, this is just fucking pathetic, and I'm debating on whether or not to sell the fucking thing when I get it back.....AGAIN!

alas, no opus for me, i got my same beloved 360 back, but with "new" mobo and a new hitachi drive, maybe next time my love, maybe next time.
