"My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread

Darkflight said:
So, mine died on Thursday, an Elite I've had since March when I traded in my old occasionally freezing Premium. I had barely started Skate 2 when it made a god awful squeaking noise and went black, after I rebooted it I had blue sqaures all over the screen and then on the 3rd try, RROD.

I have the extended warranty with GAME and it's under a year anyway, but if I take it back to them, what exactly do I need in terms of cables/hard-drive etc for a swap, I just found out that the core unit isn't enoughand the guy in the shop just said "everything" which isn't super helpful and before I trudge back again I'd like to check what exactly I need.

Mainly I really want to avoid having to give them my hard-drive.

I'm sure they wouldn't mind keeping the brand new hard drive, if you just asked.

I just shipped off my second 360 to Microsoft. It was easy, the website is much more convenient than having to call over to India.

I rang another store and they said they would just swap it, didn't know why the first store was being so odd, should get it done tomorrow morning - I worry though, I'm sure I saw a corrupted gamer profile when I was backing up some saves when it decided to work again.

I'm having a strange problem with my 360 and I need some advice.

In a nutshell, the 360 works fine except when I try to play DMC 4. If I install the game, it gives me a dre when it loads the first level. If I play it from the disk, it gives me a dre within 15 minutes of playtime. If I remove the hdd, it plays fine until Mission 6 where it hangs on a paricular load screen. The errors follow a predictable pattern but they don't make sense to me at all. I've also reformed the hdd with no change in any of the error patterns. Anyone have an idea about what's wrong with it?

More importantly, should I send it in to MS to be repaired/replaced? I've had the console since March 06 and it's never given me problems before now except for a disk tray that sometimes sticks when opening. My concern is if I send it in to MS, I'll get back a janked refurb, and my extended warrenty is due to run out this March. So playing the odds, I'm I better off keeping it?

Get it repaired before your extended runs out, otherwise you're hosed unless you get the RROD. It could start eating discs. You don't want to mess around with disc drive problems.

And since I'm already in here, I was getting intermittent freezes for awhile, and I thought it had something to do with NXE, but apparently it was my XBox 360 dying because I got the RROD a few days ago. Luckily, I have a PS3 laying around so I don't have to miss out on SFIV. But I was planning on selling it so I stopped buying games for it. Now I'm kinda in a weird situation.

Jesus!!!! I got my elite back monday and now I get the same shit checkered all over the screen. And it came back louder then before......

Wait, are you occasionally get black triangles like I am? (Actually the first time I tried Crackdown large sections of the landscape were missing I had graphical distortions that caused road lines to look wavy.) BTW, yes this is with the XBox I just got back so I'm probably sending it back in for repairs again. (Has everybody that got one back recently got back a Xenon as well?)

Well that was easy, the guy in the store didn't even check it, just swapped it right out for me. Ironically this RROD incident has lead to me impulse buying an awesome print for my room, so its not all bad :lol

my disc drive just broke... it dosn't read the disc and makes a buzzing noise 3 times and then just stops and tells me to open the tray again.

can anyone suggest the cheapest way to fix this?... i dunno if i should go through microsoft or if i should look for a local person to just fix it for me

i should mention that the 360 is like 4 years old... so i don't think there's any chance of a warranty or anything :P

I'm getting the same thing again. This is the second time the drive on this unit has gone bad. I'm so annoyed.

If one gets the red ring, what color light should the power supply display?

Yellow off, Green on.

Mine died on thursday night. Luckily it was just under the 3 years (2 weeks to be exact) so they're repairing it.

It's my 4th repair so they said they will 'compensate' me. WTF does that mean? Any one else have experience with this? What should/can I ask for? ms points? I bought an arcade unit saturday but a new one would be nice so I can sell it or I might give it to my brother.

I don't know if what I got was "compensation" or something they give to everyone, but I sent in my 2nd system on Jan 5th (still waiting) and they said there would be a one month gold card included. Whether that's compensation or now standard upon repairs I don't know. My first repair in May 06 didn't come with anything though, that I know.

Yeah the 1 month gold card has been standard for a while.

Ironically the manager just called me, I think he's in america since he spoke perfect english and his name was Anthony.

I'm guessing they'll give me free ms points or Kameo, some old shit game.

He said they didnt know if the console would be new but if it is I might return the one I bought at walmart on saturday.

Triangles? Mine were gray squares all over the screen, when I was playing NG2 I notice some slow down then a few minutes later it froze with all the squares covering the entire screen.

So I waited a few to turn the 360 back on and nothing it freezes on the booting screen.

Any cases of Jaspers failing?

Too early to tell if they will fail through the usual wear and tear. My guess it that they should be fine and hopefully won't have the 1 RLOD/error 74 that alot of older falcons are having.

I was playing FIFA 09 last night when suddenly my 360 froze. It’s happened before, so initially I wasn’t worried. But then it happened a couple more times and it finally dawned on me that my 360 was showing pre-RROD symptoms. A couple of reboots later and there it was, the RROD. I lol’d.

This morning I tried it three more times and now it’s working again, but since I got the RROD I’m gonna call customer service anyway. Do you guys think I should fry my 360 to make sure it RRODs on every bootup? I don’t want to burn my house down because of Microsoft’s incompetence, though.

Finally got my replacement 360 back. Everything seems fine so far. But some idiot as MS stuck a 1 month live card on the console itself and after prying off the card it left a sticky residue that was incredible hard to come off. I got most of it off with rubbing alcohol, but there is still bit of a stain there. Very lame MS.

I'm starting to worry that my nov 2005 360 might be dying. (cross my fingers).

I've been playing loads of fallout 3 lately, and i find that the game freezes every 10 hours or so of gameplay (not straight), and I have had several color/graphical glitches so far. These glitches are fixed by re-loading a saved file...

Hopefully it's just fallout. I have not had any problems with other games.

A lot? 7 1RL falcon failures reported here in 15 months since falcon models went on sale.

My 360's been in the shop since Jan 6th, I'm starting to lose my patience, after not receiving it (or getting an e-mail that it's now with UPS) by today they've surpassed the 3 weeks it's supposed to take. Bah!

My 360's FUCKING loud, I don't think it ever has been like this before. It's also taking a pretty damn long time to start up. I'm staring at a blank screen for at least 10 seconds before the bootup screen comes up.

Should I be worried here? I barely use it.

It shouldn't take that long. Seems like it's about to go.

Teetris said:
Seriously?! I barely use it. Maybe once or twice a week.
Oddly, those I know personally who have had theirs fail all only use them occasionally. Seems the people who are never off the thing have had more luck keeping them alive.

As for how long... you can't guess that. You're best off persuading it to break rather than messing around with it being half dead though.

hey gaf, can u help out a guy that has no clue about how the warranty works on 360? i know they only extended warranty for RROD issues but is there a way around it? this thread is too huge to read it all and i need to info for a friend. thanks and cheers.

Has anyone run into a situation where you're downloading stuff in the background while playing a game and then all of a sudden it freezes. Prompting you to restart your console only to find out that it freezes at the start or every 5-20 minutes? I've done some research and I'm thinking my gamer profile and the associated saves are corrupted because of the first freeze. I've played games without using a profile and with a newly created one. No problems at all.

I really don't want to lose my saves. I think its a huge design flaw to associate game saves with the profiles exclusively.

I've tried recovering my profile without deleting the saves. No go. Guess I'll have to delete my profile as well as saves or format the hard drive. :(

So my friend had a disc stuck in his 360 drive, couldn't get it out, so he just bought a new one (I know...).

So, question is, how much does Microsoft charge to fix that? I've tried getting it out myself, but all the ways of manually opening the drive aren't working.

Well, my poor 360 couldn't hold out any longer and got the RROD last night. Luckily, I can get it replaced since I bought the PRP with it. I'm a little scared returning my console since my credit card info is saved on the hard drive which I use to buy points with. Since it's the old Premium console with the 20 gig hard drive, I was planning to replace it with an Elite. I wonder if they are able to transfer files from my old hard drive to the new one in the store?

I'm going to give an update on my Dec 2005 Xbox 360.
Still runs, no problems now... WHY WONT IT DIE SO I CAN GET AN HDMI MODEL! /cry

Ugghhh I'm so pissed. Now my Xbox is giving me all sorts of errors. From E71 to E79. I've also gotten the three rings too. But they are all so random. Still freezes when I do manage to get it working. My warranty expired in September of 08. I know microshit will fix the three red rings for free, but I only get that randomly. How would they go about that? I've gotten numerous errors including the three red rings but that only pops up randomly, not every boot up.

I have a feeling they won't let me send this in for free. Any tips on how to force it to get three red rings?

My 360 died two nights ago. I ws getting hard freezes with checkers all over the screen then it finally red ringed. I did everything online, it was super easy, and mailed the coffin off yesterday. I was still under warranty so i didnt have to pay anything. This is going to be my 3rd 360 but the first time i got the 3 red rings. last time it was a my disc drive. Luckily i have a ps3 and a gamefly acct so my ps3 will get a work out especially with kz2 around the corner. I do miss my 360 very much tho i get depressed looking at the empty spot in my entertainment center.

Is that typical? I'm wondering if I should buy a Falcon since it looks like I won't be able to buy a Jasper any time soon.

Yes. My friend got a Jasper, and while it did not get an RROD, something is clearly up with either its optical drive or laser. For instance, while playing Gears of War, only the characters will load, but no floor or sky. Some games will play normally for periods of 10 minutes before getting a disc read error. He is shipping it back, and I'm curious to see how it plays when it returns.

My 360 died two days ago, RROD, totally out of the blue without any warning whatsoever. Ugh. Just hate the idea of going through the entire process. Saw that thing where you can get a Jasper for $150, and I'm almost tempted to just do that and then try to sell off or whatever the system I get back from getting my current replaced (even though I really can't justify just up and buying a whole new machine).

I just so hate the feeling of uncertainly around the 360, both in never knowing if your machine is going to work each time you turn it on, and what exactly the result of sending it in for "repair" is going to be.

I just purchased a Pro Holiday Bundle with Kungfu Panda and LEGO Indy (Jan 24). The unit seems fine but I've started getting dirty disc errors with NHL 09 which I purchased a week ago.

I've gathered through some online research that it may just be NHL 09 causing the dirty disc error and I would just like someone to confirm for me that this is a legitimate issue and I don't need to worry about my new Xbox being faulty.

My only concern is that when I boot up NHL09 on the very first boot-up screen there is noticable artifacting on that screen (Two to four white tiny bars that look like pixelation that appear randomly on the left of the screen). It disappears as it continues through the boot-up screens.

I've tried the disc on a buddy's Xbox and it loads fine and there is no artifacting. And there is no dirty disc errors.

Should I be concerned about my Xbox, or is it just the lousy NHL09 disc? Thanks for the help!

For the record, the unit is a Falcon, going by the power supply plug-in.

360 started freezing up and emitting loud static-like sounds while playing ToV....red-ringed about the 5th time this happened :(.

Damn, just found out that the Arcade I bought from amazon.ca 3 months ago is a Zephyr. Now I don't even feel like playing it.

FYI: If you send in a 360 without HDMI, you get a 360 back without HDMI.

Mine died for the 4th time and they are really getting good with the service now.

My 360 died on a thursday night, I called and they told me they were going to ship the box overnight. So I got it on monday, shipped the thing back tuesday overnight and they got it on wednesday. On thursday they shipped it overnight and fedex tried to deliver it on friday but I was not home. They tried again today but my brother didnt hear the door (dumbass) so I guess I'll get it tomorrow.

I went and bought a new arcade unit but it's nice to know they're getting good about the exchange process.

I've also had a customer service rep (speaks regular american english too) call me almost every day updating me on the status of the repair....even on sundays they call it's pretty neat.

I've never really understood that. It either dies, and MS replaces it... or it doesn't, and you don't worry about it.

Well, in my case I do need to worry about it, since I'm not in Canada anymore, so my 360 isn't covered anymore. After 2 360s (the 2nd one was a friend's, though), I thought I finally found one that I wouldn't need to worry about. I don't think I'll ever buy another 360.

The easiest thing to do is to just check the 12V rating on the back.

14,2A = Falcon
12,1A = Jasper

The split in the bar means you have the newest model.

Wait, mine (Arcade, bought last November but manufactured in 9/2007) has a 16.5A rating but the connector shown in the middle. So is it a Zephyr or a Falcon?!
