"My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread

Yaaay, 4th service here I come. After a sudden E71 months ago (which was fixed by a simple reboot) and full red lights several weeks ago, yesterday my Xbox 360 died, again, for the fourth time. All lights all flashing, which means a cable failure, but there is nothing wrong with them - after several tries it turned on and I was even able to play for 3 hours of Brütal Legend! That was yesterday night, but now all I am getting is red lights all over it.

By the way, I don' know what the hell is with Microsoft, but after calling the support I learned that here, in Hungary (and maybe in all over Europe?) after the 3rd repair you get a lifetime guarantee, which means FREE repair for the rest of eternity. Or, at least the next greatly built and dreamt iteration of Xbox 360!

...Which is a great timing considering a fact that on Tuesday I would have got my sweet Borderlands promo copy.
I'm very sorry. :(

I'm not much on shooter types, but I've had my eyes on Borderlands for a while now.

Thanks, but thankfully there are 6 X360's in the office so I just bring one home until mine comes back. I hope they don't mess up the repair this time, my second run was just 5 days only: they shipped it back without looking at the actual problem, so I was forced to send it back in again :)

so, my launch 360 died again and now I'm out of warranty etc.

I will most probably buy an arcade and just use my 20 gig hdd, but the super elite forza 3 pack is very tempting :(

I have a question about the xbox arcade console. does every one of them now have the internal flash memory? do I have to recover my gamer tag on the new arcade or is everything set with just plugging in the hdd from the old console?

edit: interesting hitoshi. I will call the support tomorrow and ask about this (Austria)

You can add my January 2008 Falcon Elite to the list. I bought an extended warranty from Wal-mart thinking I could take it in and exchange it for another one, but now they are saying I have to send it in to some 3rd party repair center which just sends the console back to Microsoft for you. What's the purpose of the extended warranty, If I can just send it to Microsoft myself? It just doubles the ship time. Protip: DO NOT buy the extended warranty from Wal-mart.

So my disc drive just died and I'm a little confused about how the warranty works. I got my 2nd rrod at the end of october this time last year. Do they add another year of standard warranty after the repair???

They add 30 days. Which means you will have to pay to get it fixed I guess.

that is fucking poopy

Have someone on Craig's List fix it. The drive is $30 on Ebay and the full bill shouldn't come to more than $50.

Hell, if you live in Phoenix I'll do it for that price.

First time my 360 died was yesterday and right after I bought Fallout 3 GOTY no less. My warranty ran out in July after having it for a year and now I don't know whether to pay the $100 to get it fixed or upgrade to a 60 GB later down the line.

I bought the PS3 Slim when it came out so I guess it's time to really start digging into it.

Quick question if I may,
I'm about to buy 360 and I don't want to come whine in this thread one day, so should I do x-clamp fix on newly bought 360? I'd remove sticker with hair-dryer and put it back on.
I was thinking about not doing it, but what if it keeps overheating and overheating and after 3 something years when warranty is out it just dies, I'm screwed.
Maybe it's best to do it right away? And if it dies, put it back in and send for repair?

LA heatwave claimed my second 360. 1st one bit it two years ago during similar hot times... really annoying. At least I get a new one for free, maybe I'll get some work done this week too :/

last time mine rroded, they sent me a new 360, how do i sort the licenses so i can play xbla etc offline? tried redownloading a game but didnt work

I bought mine in March 2006 and used a terrible loud Niko intercooler for the first 3 years .

After the warranty was gone i opened my console , removed the chewing gum MS calls cooling paste , lapped both heat sinks like a mirror and put some Artic silver under there .
Used tape to isolate the air-tunnel and improve airflow , used a Dremel to remove part of the metal chassis blocking the air fans on the back .
Replaced the air fans with silent fans , did a 12 volt mod and used a PC fan controller so i can use anything between 5v and 12v .
Lots more air and not so loud anymore .

To prevent the E74 error ,( overheating of the scaler chip ) i simply sticked 2 small ram chip coolers on there .

After this message it will probably explode by extreme RROD right in my face tonight !

Don't fucking do it. Don't. It will still die. Better have the warranty in case it dies within three years.

Hey GAF my son's 360 got 2 red lights on the left hand side on thursday morning. I took the 360 to work with me on monday and reapplied thermal paste slapped the heatsinks back on then tested it at my job for close to 2 hours. No issues at all I was able to play close to 2 hours of crackdown on his machine.

I unplug it from work, drive home with it, plug it up in his room, he plays for 10 minutes, BOOM 2 red lights again.

Does anyone know of a definitive DIY solution to the overheating issue?
Since I've already replaced the thermal paste on the chips, should I now turn my attention to the internal fans?

I know I've voided the warranty and I am OK with that. I just need to know if anyone else has experience repairing this issue themselves or can share any good links with me. I keep seeing these "repair video guides" but I refuse to buy what should be available somewhere on the internet for free.

Please someone link me to a good guide.

So I have finally experienced a failing xbox.

But it wasn't mine, my little cousin's Falcon got an E74 and they had to send it in. I kind of feel bad because they play the thing constantly and I am pretty sure it will die again.

In related news my Zephyr is running just fine, despite my several attempts to try and jinx it :lol

Agreed , why bother when you have full warranty !

Yes but isn't it better to prevent it early on? If I don't do it it will just keep overheating until it blows(dies) one day, probably when warranty is out.
On the other hand if I do open it and it dies later, I can just put it back in and send it, but there's less chance of it dying anyway.

Get the Whisper Max fan, it takes about 5min to install and will super cool your unit. My brother was having the same problem. He could watch Netflix but the min he played any game for about 10 or so mins it would RROD 2 lights

His was long out of warranty so we replaced the inside fan with the Whisper Max and made it permanently sit on game mode (There are 2 modes, one is the regular 5v fan speed and game mode is 12v) and he has not had a RROD even after 7-8hr plays

Warning though the 12v game mode of the fan is loud as hell, so if you don't mind hearing the fan the fix costs roughly $28

There are even a few videos on youtube to show you how to install it if you are concerned, the instructions with the thing blow but like I said it took 5min

X Clamp fix won't do shit. Trust me. Back in 2007 I pushed this method a lot and even made a guide for GAF that has also circled the world, but no... it does NOT WORK. It won't avoid anything at all. Just keep the warranty.

ok, so wtf. Has anyone's repaired console shipped from the Texas(?) facility in the last week? I've gathered that they send them in bunches, but mine has still not been shipped out even though they told UPS to pick up (Billing Information Received) the thing last monday (10/11).

Yeah, I did some researching around gaf and it seems it either doesn't work or its not worth doing before hmm.

bah, dunno what to do, I don't want it to die lol, I know it's out of my hands but :(

Sure, but they might just send it back to you if it works when they test it.

So I have to wait until it's fully broken? That could take months, and I'll be out of warranty by then. Oh well, I'll hang on to it. If it breaks, I'll just open it up and try to fix it myself. If that doesn't work, what's the proper way to dispose of a broken console? Does it go into the regular trash?

Well just wait a little while. Months ago when my 360 red ringed, it worked for another day or so, then it wouldn't work at all.

I supposed you could put a towel around it and force an overheat/3 red rings.

Mine red ringed last night unfortunately. At least it was now instead of immediately before Modern Warfare 2 comes out...

Since I got this in January of 06 I'm screwed when it comes to the warranty, right? So I either pay $99 to fix it or I just buy a new console.

Am I correct in recalling that Elites don't come with the hard drive transfer cable? Because I'd like to get everything off my drive...

Sounds great thanks for the reply. I'm going to check them out right now. It would be a much better solution for me to get the 28 dollar fans than having to invest in another xbox.

So my launch console finally gave. What a trooper. Lasted so long.

I'm considering purchasing an elite model. Is there any obvious advantages to owning one besides extra space? I'm picking up a new one soon, please answer someone!

Nope, just the space. Although, technically you could get the Elite holiday bundle atm with 2 games. Maybe throw aways or trade-ins perhaps depending on your taste.

I posted this in the canada gaming deals thread:

It`s going to be the 4th time I send my 360 in. Last time it went in for repair was when Halo3 got released. Grrrr.

Well, the console that MS replaced my launch one with a couple years ago RROD'd about a month ago. I took it to a repair guy here and it worked fine for the last month until it RROD'd again. So, I decided to use a Radio Shack credit I had laying around and get a new console. It's a jasper model, but I haven't really followed that story-- are they really more reliable?

Right after I bought Red Faction Guerrilla last month, my 360 RROD for the second time.
I sent it to the repair center and got another one in a couple of weeks.

But I was having problems with this other console as well. I could play some games, but while attempting to play some other ones it would freeze time after time (for example, with Red Faction Guerrilla, grrrr).
So I bought Fable 2 thinking that my copy of RFG was faulty. But it was not, it was the damned console I got from the repair center what was faulty.

So, after arguing during an hour by telephone with MS people (who, in all honesty, I have to say were always extremely nice), they agreed to send me a new console (not refurbished), to use an express delivery system, and to gift me with a game or accessory of my choice (wireless headset FTW).

I've been more than a month without console, but I got a free gift and a console that hopefully will last me long.

Just got my 360 back today. The letter included in the box mentioned it was a new console that they gave me.

What's the easiest way to find out what the chipset is?

I'm just worried they gave me the same model I already had. :(

You managed to get free stuff? I argued for a while but they wouldn't give me anything. :(

Don't want to start a new thread - hoping someone in here can provide me with some guidance.

I have a launch system. It RROD'd on me, and I got it fixed (out of warranty by a few months, oh well). No problems there. It works fine. Makes a butt-load of noise, but it's functional. This is more a matter of preference.

I want to run my 360 over HDMI (I currently do 1080p over the VGA input. I know, I know...), but, alas, there's not HDMI happening on my launch system. I'm thinking about picking up an arcade unit and just slapping the HDD from my old system on it. My question: will that work? (I don't care about upping the size of the HDD - 20gb is good for me.)

Is there any info saved on the system itself, or is everything stored on the HDD? Again, it's just my preference. (I just want fewer cables and everything running over HDMI.)

My system is freezing up now on separate games. Funny thing is, I just gave it to my brother for an extended loan since I no longer play it and this happens to me for the first time ever. How do I find out if I'm covered? Call Microsoft?

go to: support.xbox.com and register your system, and it will tell you. You'll need your consoles serial number to do so (it's on a little sticker on the back), so you may want to get it handy beforehand. You can even setup the repair (and pay for it if need be) from there. I'd personally avoid calling MS if I could help it, but then I've had nothing but bad experiences when I did, so my advice may be a little tainted from that. :lol

My own 360 finally got to Texas yesterday! Yay! Maybe I'll actually get it back before MW2 launch. What's NeoGAF's motto again? :D

First 360 (Pro) 11/2005 - 5/2007 (RROD)
Second 360 (Arcade) 11/2007 - 10/2009 (E74 Error)

Not a good time to die, want to play GTA: TBoGT . Oy Vey .

I just got mine back less than a week ago. I haven't had time to really play it until now.

Tonight I watched a DVD then later played some COD4. The DVD was fine. Running the game is a different story. It's installed to the HDD but while playing the disc drive makes all sorts of noises. The best way I can describe it is the sound the Dreamcast would make while reading the disc, except there's no reason for it to be reading it past the initial check for the game in the drive.

Any ideas? Am I doomed for another failure?
