"My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread

I registered my recently broken 360 on xbox.com and it says I have to wait to get an email back before filling out for repair. How long does it take to get that email? I did this last thursday.

Second XBox 360 RROD'ed at the weekend. Happened 18 months ago to my first one and they just sent me a brand new unit.

Happened Saturday when i wanted to play DJ Hero and got picked up yesterday. Hopefully it isnt away too long! Thought that was going to be the worst part of my weekend until i was in a car crash an hour later...!

Call them. I tried doing the same, didn't seem to work. The dude on the phone just ordered a UPS pickup straight away. A week later it was on it's way.

Man how annoyed I am this happened the day after I got Forza 3 and it still hasn't arrived after MW2 :(

At least I got to fantastic games to jump into hopefully at the end of the week :D

My Falcon Elite from 10/19/2007 just RRoD. I just ordered the coffin.

The good news is I haven't bought anything for it all year so I won't miss it. My son popped in Spiderman 3 and the screen went black in a few minutes. The console had pretty light play, I buy everything multi-platform on the PS3.

what the fuck.

my 360 cant read discs right now
last week it was working perfectly, over the weekend discs were sometimes iffy

now it just says "reading... open tray" no matter what game i put in

am i screwed? the day after MW2 came out?

Oddly enough, this exact same thing happened to a friend of mine on Monday. He disconnected everything (power cables etc) and reconnected it then it worked fine. Worth a try.

The thing is I'm out of the 3 year warranty and have been reading that sometimes when you file the repair online outside of the warranty period it shows up as no cost for repairs. Maybe I will call and see if they can just get the console registered online for me.

My 360 died during a system update. Just boots up with top left, bottom left, bottom right LEDs flashing red/orange.

2nd 360 to die.

This is pretty fucking ridiculous. My NES, SNES, N64, GC, Wii, PSone, DC, PS2, PS3 (both) all still work. Microsoft has quality issues. Good thing pretty much all of the games on my horizon are on PS3 as well. Maybe in a year when 360 Arcade/Dumbfuck version is $150 and there's some games I want, I'll get it and use my existing harddrive. Until then, I'm out.

Yet another Xbox 360 bites the dust... :'(

The first one had a faulty disk drive, I traded it in, again a faulty disk drive.
Microsoft replaced it and now I got the E76 error, it turns out about every ethernet port in my room is fried due to a lightning strike.

So what are the chances MS is going to drop the price again this holiday season? Last time they dropped it about two weeks after I bought one.

Just got a RROD while playing Arkham Asylum. Thegame just froze up. the system has had problems loading levels fast enough lately, I figured this was bound to happen. So what now? I use this site ( http://support.xbox.com/support/en/...ort/en/us/nxe/registerdevice.aspx?step=repair ) and send it in for a free repair? Do I just send in the console or do I need to send in the HDD and the power supply?

I'm sad. I haven't even used the system all that much, it probably woulda happened a while ago to a more avid user. The console would be two years old this christmas. R.I.P.

Just the console, nothing else (not even the faceplate).
I have a Halo 3 edition 360, never put a face plate on it...is the face that came on the console count a face plate? Because if so, I dunno how to remove that.

Nope, doesn't count. It's part of the system itself. If you have a custom faceplate then you should remove it.

Oh, I forgot to log my death here.

1 Pro (20GB) 360, Bought April 2008, died November 2009 (Chequerboard crashing leading to RROD).

I'll give Microsoft credit though, I requested my warranty repair last Saturday, I got UPS to collect my console from my work on Monday, it got to Robert Bosch in Germany (Ironically one of my companies suppliers) on Wednesday, and it has been "repaired or replaced" and has an expected delivery date by UPS of the 17th of November.

So, as long as it gets to me on time (UPS deliver to my company every day so it should do), a RROD took a 10 day turnaround from request to return, not bad.

NB: I er..had a PoP faceplate, I forgot to take it off, darn.

OT: I wonder if they liked my packing? A tightly packed box with oodles of air packets, complete with heat sealed plastic strapping, I love working for a company with a logistics dept!

bitch just died, a couple months over a year old. never had a console die in my 20+ years as a gamer. well done microsoft in making such a reliable machine... sad thing is Im probably gonna go out and get a new one :(

It's still under warranty. Just get it replaced.

Indeed. I'm sure you can wait a week or so without rewarding them for their failings.

(Plus, you really don't want to be trying to sell your refurbed machine right now!)

So I checked out Microsoft's support site, and 3 rings means expired warranty. I didn't know that the warranty was boosted from 1 year to 3 years.

Repair is $100, and my power LED is green so it's probably the OS flash corrupted as my 360 bricked immediately at reboot from a system update. I've noticed likely unrelated problems, like video gets fuzzy like analog TV snow around the edges sometimes and I've rebooted before to fix that. So I think if they fix the flash, likely something else is about to go.

Meh, I guess I'm going to get a new one. With the 3 year warranty, it should be the last I'll have to pay for. If I have a #4, it will be on Microsoft's dime.

I think I'm going to get the Modern Warfare 2 Elite as it's HDMI, quiet, and 250 GB. It has 2 controllers and cables included. Taking away the repair cost and game, I'm paying $240 and I'm getting something for it. I'm still not happy, and I don't think Xbox3/720/1080/whatever will be my primary console next generation for 3rd party multiplatforms.

What? How old is your system? If your system is under 3 years old, then it is still under warranty and you can get it repaired for free.

My system was manufactured on 8/25/2006.

It's really my second console. I bought my original at Circuit City in December 2006. That 360 gradually was unable to read discs (started out with longer load times, then short "trouble reading disc", followed by the game closing with a disc read error). I swapped that out around January 2007 for this one.

Can I dispute the warranty expiration? Or is it based on the manufacture date?

EDIT:

I read the 3 LED description wrong on Microsoft's site. Here's what it says:

Standard warranty expired: A three-year warranty applies to Xbox 360 issues that are associated with three red lights. Please click Request a Repair to proceed.

Putting my serial number in, MS says it's expired. So unless I call them and bitch, I have to buy a new one or pay $100. I hate bitching/haggling, so I'm just going to buy a new one.

You can get it repaired, I've seen people with 5-6 months expired units get them repaired.

My repaired unit died red-ringed on me Sunday morning after about a year of service. The first one lasted from 2006-2008 (as previously reported in this thread).

Thankfully, I had picked up and repaired an Elite off of Craigslist for $20. It wasn't reading discs when I bought it but now it's handling MW2 like a champ. Fingers crossed that it lasts a while.

Well I just had my first red ring today :(. E74 error after weeks of black dots showing up during Modern Warfare 2 and Dragon Age. I bought it when Assassin's Creed came out so that's Nov 2007 i believe? Two years isn't that bad.

I filled out the online repair request form and am not being charged a dime (well besides getting my own box and bubble wrap) hopefully, I'll be back to owning soon enough.

I think 10 days is about the average turn around time.

My second RROD. I blame my wife. She was watching netflix when it happened. I've had a 360 since launch. This one had very heavy use. So not too bad. I think I'll opt out and get a 120 GB Elite. My 20 gb hd just doesn't cut it anymore.

So I finally got it registered to xbox.com (had to call them because never got email from xbox support) and to my surprise It will cost nothing even though I'm out of the 3 year warranty period. I've had 2 rrod before so maybe that is part of the reason why it's free..either way I'll take it.

Not bad. My XBox died a week last Saturday, it got picked up last Tuesday, shipped to Germany, and i got a brand new console delivered yesterday. Only a week!

Forgot to post mine up...

2nd box red ringed on 11/10. Picked up MW2 and played it from midnight till 5am. Slept and woke up to play some more..box red ringed. Took it over to Best Buy since I have warranty there. Came out with an elite and a $100 store credit since I bought the pro when it was still $400. Not bad I guess...finally no more 20gb HD. But I did sacrifice my saves for it :lol

Same thing happened to mine. Your DVD drive may be dying. If so Microsoft will fix it for $100.

...yeah I didn't go for it.

Usual Disclaimer: If I can't tell when your 360 died / was replaced, you aren't included in the figures. That's basically anyone that just posted to say that their 360 died last year some time or they've had x dead 360s and gave no more information. Also, if you posted to say your 360 was acting up and never came back to confirm its death / shipment / getting a new one... you aren't included either.

Don't forget that NPD US numbers are simply included to give a rough idea of how many 360s are out there for each particular month.

In the figures so far are 1359 dead / replaced 360s, 75 of which were falcon models.

This Month

RRoD: 26
Other Red Light: 4
Drive: 3
Freezing: 1

11 of the 15 refurb failures were due to RRoD.

Overall Falcon Issues

RRoD: 44
1RL: 16
DOA: 5
Drive: 4
Freezing: 1
Video: 5

Overall Jasper Issues

PSU: 1

My 360 finally reached the repair center. This wait is killing me, I need my MW2 fix :(.

Eeeeh help GAF :/

My 360 is displaying weirdly. It happened one month ago already but went back to normal after I turned it off for a few hours.

Should I be worried?

Fuck, right when L4D2 hits the stores, as fucking always.

edit : it's still under warranty for 10 days.

So I moved my 360 from my tv room to my bed room and then back last night and guess what... 3 red lights.

Now i've got to call and see if microsoft will repair it or not.

This is already the second 360 I've had that's given me the RROD and I'm pretty angry.

I wanna play L4D2 and MW2.

Shoogoo said:
But .. but L4D2? :'(

It's working fine again. What could be the cause? I had to send it exactly 1 year ago for an E74.

(The above poster is right, your GPU is dying.)

I can assure you won't enjoy L4D2 as much.

I had to deal with black dots and other graphical hitches during MW2 multiplayer for a week before my 360 finally gave up and E74'd.

It was not fun to continuously turn my 360 on and off to get rid of the black dots over and over again.

Bottom Line: Your 360 WILL fail sooner or later, may as well get it fixed now and enjoy L4D2 to its fullest a little later.

Goddamit Microsoft, E74 again then?

I have a Falcon, what are the odds for them to change the whole console to a Jasper? Close to zero I guess.

But my framerate is fine though, and I don't have any hitches except those black lines on BF43 only on Guadalcanal, could that be the GPU too?

And Pankaks, why do you say I won't enjoy L4D2 as much? Do you mean it will run smoother if I get it repaired? Because I don't really see anything wrong so far, aside from the occasional display bug.

Thanks to both of you.

Well in my experience, Modern Warfare 2 ran at the same FPS just with display errors. But, the black dots and lines really annoyed the hell out of me and made it hard to spot enemies during multiplayer.

It's possible that it may not bother you as much during L4D2.

It's really up to you I guess. I personally couldn't fully enjoy MW2 with all the display errors.

I don't have that kind of dots things.. Though yeah you're right, I'm considering sending it back as it's under warranty until 2nd of December.

But I'm confused on how to prove it. I never managed to enter my serial number on the support page (I'm from Europe, if that changes anything. 2 years warranty, too).

When I sent it last year they knew just by the serial number that it was still under warranty. I didn't send any proof or whatever. What will happen this time around? I'm confused.

I'm not sure I can help you with the European process but,

What I did when my 360 E74'd was just go to the support page, register my console (serial number), requested a repair, printed out the shipping label, and sent it out.

Yea they still use the serial number to see if your under warranty. This is what my support page says:

Thank you, a shame I can't register the console on the support thing :/

If I've had an E74 last year, do I benefit from one more year of warranty? I know they added the E74 to the three year warranty in april 2009, after I had my E74.

I'm not sure if they give you an extra year warranty.

But, if you do happen to get an E74 error you're covered for a while.

However, I think you need to actually get the E74 error screen before they're gonna fix it (I think).

Microsoft said:
Effective immediately, Microsoft has extended its warranty coverage for Xbox 360 users who have encountered the 'E74' hardware error code, to three years from the console's purchase date.

I bought mine Nov 2007 and they aren't charging me a thing.

I'm not sure if they count when you bought your 360 or when you received the repaired one.

You may want to call them and make sure.
