"My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread

UKer here... I got up early today to play today... While the other half was in bed, since he whinges as me something chronic for playing games (even though he bought it for me - serves him right), I stumbled into the living room, and happily turned the Xbox on.

Started playing Star Ocean... Then it all went a bit green, so I restarted. It went green again, I kinda thought 'uhoh' but knowing that my Xbox had been solid as a rock for two years, restarted again... TO GET THE E74 SCREEN.

I'm heartbroken!! Hahaha! I thought I was immune to the whole thing. Now I'm one of those people, registering on the site, requesting a label.

Anyone going to talk me through the painful process? I guess I have to wrap it all up safely in some sort of box? Is postage covered by the label? How long does it take? Will I get a new one, or a repaired one? I'm a virgin to this whole 'MY XBOX DIED' thing. :(

I bet it's gonna drag on over Christmas. Hahaha I'm really NOT happy! :(

It was an Elite, Falcon from Nov 07.

Just find any random box to throw it into, though make sure you've got some padding around it. As for the label, yeah it covers everything. It should take less than 2 weeks so don't worry about xmas... and you'll likely get your machine back with a new motherboard (and probably drive) in it. Though some get a completely different machine.

well, a refurb with a different serial number anyway...

Awesome. You mentioned this to me in another thread, I already shipped away my 360 at the zero dollars price point (rather than the $120 they wanted to charge). I cannot wait to get another machine.

Cheers, that doesn't sound 'too' traumatic then! Guess it gives me a chance to catch up on a few Wii games that I've neglected.

Finally got a Rrod. 3 months out of warranty. August 2006 unit.

I asked for servicing on the site and moaned in the commentary space about how life was unfair and I shouldn't have to pay. Meanwhile, the receipt page says:

Xbox 360 Console Service - 3 Flashing Lights
1 0,00 € 0,00 €

Does this mean I won't have to pay anything or do they charge for repairs later? They haven't mentioned paying anything anywhere so far. I haven't received the UPS mail yet though.

Bah lucky. Mine is still in the "Repair in Progress" stage.

Got my Xbox back today :)

It is a different serial number... and chance that it is a new build?

edit- you have got to be kidding me... the xbox they sent me doesn't work either! When I press the power button it lights up and everything and the console kinda vibrates a little but nothing shows up on screen... neither my wireless nor my wired controller will hook up to it either...

edit2- Got it working somehow! I hooked it up to my SDTV upstairs and it worked randomly... I think the xbox was set to SD while I had the cable to HDTV or somthing stupid like that :lol Disregard the part about the controllers... they just randomly started connecting as well lol

So I just got a new 360 about 2 weeks ago and Ive got it hooked up through HDMI.

Everything seemed fine except for today I turned it on and after a minute the screen went blank, a few seconds later it came back on and then a minute or two later it did the same thing. I turned the TV off and on and it seemed to stop it.

Has anyone else had this happen to them ?

Im wondering if my xbox is about to break or if my TV is or what.

I still haven't gotten my shipping label in the mail. do I just cancel the order and do a new repair service? I can just print it at school if that's the case.

After an E74 1,5 years ago the RROD appeared yesterday :(
Ugh, no MW2 for at least 2 weeks, but i'm affraid i'll cave and go out and buy an elite

Woohoo

Finally got my 360 back after those damn UPS bastards made me wait on Friday >:|.

I got a replacement unit and free month of Xbox live to go with it. The drive is a little louder then I remember though.

Any quick fixes for a console that scratches discs? Is Microsoft still not acknowledging this issue, and am I out of luck if I try to get it repaired?

They've been acknowledging it for over two years now. The first refurbished console they sent me scratched discs and they allowed me to send it back under warranty.

Awesome, two years ago my second 360 was scratching discs and MS wouldn't take it. I'm glad that they are finally taking some responsibility.

Can someone explain what just happened? :S I just turned off my 360 after a few hours of MW2, with the battery charger plugged in & after I had turne it off, I got a fast blinking RROD that wouldn't go away until I hit the power button. I tried rebooting it & it started up just fine. Should I be afraid (again)?

Probably not. You get an RRoD any time there's a power issue; I've had them from the power cable plugged into the AC coming loose, from a power blink in my house, etc. If it turns on afterward and plays fine, you're probably fine.

... now, that doesn't mean you won't independently get an RRoD sometime soon, I just wouldn't take it as a warning sign ;)

Alright sounds good enough :) And yeah, it works just fine afterwards, even though my KD ratio in mw2 got shot to hell ;)

Edit: It just happened again when I tried to start the console. WTF :( I haven't touched the power cables or anything else for that matter. Pretty well ventilated as well & no power outtages that have affected anything else nearby.

Edit 2: RIP. 'Nuff said. On second thought, no. If I want to resell this piece of junk used, should I be worried about my credit card info etc? I'm keeping the HDD of course.

I'm living to tell the story once again!

Thanks to The Faceless Master ( http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=379732 ) giving me this link https://service.xbox.com/ based on this http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=18390634&postcount=15

Without clicking the links, I was basically out of warranty, yet I went and got my Xbox fixed for free using service.xbox.com. I was a disbeliever. I got my coffin from Microsoft. I still wasn't fully believing this was working (ie it was going to get fixed for free), then I just got this email:

I have bought three 360 games and transferred all the Lego Rock Band tracks to my hard drive since my red ring, I can't wait to finally play my games now! :D

Jeez, finally got the shipping label today, after ordering it on the 13th. I hope the actual repair doesn't take so long. Sent in already.

My 360 died today. Got the RROD. it survived once but then just froze on L4D2. I already requested to get it shipped to microsoft for repair. Should be nice to just give me a new system with 120GB HDD :lol.

Got an email saying they shipped it back to me. should arrive tomorrow.

A guy I started working with earlier this year has become a really good friend of mine and only plays on Live...so what did I do?

I purchased 2 copies of MW2 plus my first subscription to Live...but..
I buy the game at about 6pm...
Hook the 360 to the router and type in my info to buy a years sub. at about 7pm...
Pay about 12 bucks for points to buy MW2 outfit and UAV thing for my Avatar (go ahead laugh, it was a new toy)..

3 hours into playing on Live with my friends all my colors turn into Blue and Yellow dots...
I turn it off and think maybe it has to cool down, nope, when I turn it back on I get the E74error code:lol

Luckily its still covered since its date on the back is Feb. 2008.
I suppose to get a label in 4 days since I dont own a printer to print it out, so now I just wait.

Sucks tho, I spent about $100 on the game, Live, and points and cant use any of it less then 12 hours later.

Well, Gamestop had a pretty good Xmas deal on the Elite so I just had to buy one today :lol Couldn't even go a day without my 360 >_< Got 3 games with it that I'm gonna try to sell with my broken console (already have 2 of the games & PURE is not for me). Won't ship outside Sweden though :P

didnt know anyone witha printer?
Eh, I coulda printed it at school (for like, 10 cents a page), but I figured I could wait a few days for them to send me the proper label. Didn't know it'd be well over two weeks.:lol

So, its been like a year since the Jasper 360's have been out.

What is the failure rate on them compared to the Falcon's?

I dropped my coffined 360 off at the UPS store a week ago, but checking my repair on Xbox.com says Waiting on Console. Not even Console Shipped Out. GAF, should I be worried? Has UPS ganked my 360?

My Elite console died a few days ago, the night before I was leaving home to go back to school after Thanksgiving. I had my girlfriend pack it up and ship it so it's probably due to MS any day now. My current 360 timeline:

November 22, 2005: Bought launch 360
June 2006: 1st System died, smooth repair process
June 2007: 2nd system died, shitty repair process expedited only by BBB complaint and help from a GAF member working at MS
February 2008: 3rd console died, went out and bought an Elite.
November 28, 2009: Elite, 4th console, dies. Sent into MS, and waiting for 5th console.

My November 2007 360 E74'd about 2 weeks ago after a week or so of graphical glitches.

I'm kinda worried about the fact that they haven't received it yet since I sent it a week ago. I guess that's probably normal though?

Hopefully they'll also fix the disc tray, since it has massive problems opening (but that's not warranty covered). I wonder if they'll remove the Apple logo sticker I put on there..

Also is it true that they can send you back a different refurbished console.. meaning it could have no HDMI?

They aren't supposed to. If they do, you need to call them and tell them they messed up. Not likely, though. I have heard of some people getting a console with an HDMI port back when they didn't have one before, but not the other way around.

My Falcon just got the E-74 error with 3 red lights.

I was playing AC2 at the time, and I initally thought that the freeze was due to the buggy nature of the game. :lol

I got the 3 red lights and thought 'ffffffffffff'

It's a fairly new system, got it earlier this year in Taiwan.

Ended up just being the power supply that was broken. Bought a new one and things seem to be ok (for now...)

1:23pm -
THE RECEIVER WAS UNAVAILABLE TO SIGN ON THE 1ST DELIVERY ATTEMPT. A 2ND DELIVERY ATTEMPT WILL BE MADE

Scheduled Delivery: December 4, 2009.

Screw you.

Can't blame them since no one is home to sign for the package. How many tries do they do this before they make me go pick it up? :lol.

The secret to getting a great Xbox360 unit is finding one that has proven to be very reliable over time. I still have a launch unit which I bought a second hand and still works great. Its never given me problems, never crashed and never even frozen. Find a reliable used 360 they are the best bet. There's no guarantee in buying a new one that it won't RROD (yes even Jasper I've heard).

...

They make three attempts.

So my Xbox doesn't display anything on my tv anymore. Bare in mind that i didn't get RROD. I tried to connect it with a component cable and another tv, same shit. it works fine but it doesn't show anything.Did anyone experience such a thing?

Is there a way to track your replacement or get an update? I thought I chose to get a box shipped to me, but after 10 days all I got was a label, now my 360 has been gone a week, but I have no idea if they even got it. They know my e-mail address, they don't automate updates?

Did you keep the tracking number they give you with the label?

Received a 360 which was supposedly brand new but when I registered the serial online, it says the warranty will expire on 08/08/2010.

Does that mean it was purchased nearly 4 months ago?

What's the manufacturing date on the console?

I looked up my case on xbox.com, it is "being repaired", what are the odds of getting the same system back versus a different refurb unit? Do they ever send out more reliable units or ones more likely to die than new?

Good and bad news. good news was that UPS just came to give me my package. bad news was my "package" was showing because the sweatpants I had on was too big and it showed my pubic area :lol.

Cool complimentary 1 month live card. thanks MS.
