"My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread

Good and bad news. good news was that UPS just came to give me my package. bad news was my "package" was showing because the sweatpants I had on was too big and it showed my pubic area :lol.
You might have inadvertently started a public decency challenge with the delivery driver...

(on a related note, I wonder how many times I've done something similar going to the door in my dressing gown half asleep. Poor bastards.)

Well, there's goes my 360. I had hoped the tales of the RROD were greatly exaggerated, but it happened to me completely out of the blue, and now by beloved 360 is as dead as a doorstop. It's literally two years old, purchased early December 07.

That's the whole thing pretty much ruined for me. I LOVE gaming on the 360, and I have an extremely large collection of games for the thing (I'm talking over 70 games retail, 30 or so XLBA, a bunch of OG Xbox games)... but to know the damn system is just a ticking time bomb no matter what you do, I know that once it's fixed I'll never be able to enjoy it the same, it's not "perfect" any more, I'll be too concerned that the damn thing will just pop at any minute. It's just so random. There wasn't a hint of it happening. The system was as good as the day I bought it just last night.

It's ironic because I've spent the last few weeks making fun of a colleague at work who got banned from XBL for modding his unit. Here's me, a good customer, who can't play my fucking games at all through no fault of my own.

I was going to get my son Lego Indy 2 for Christmas, I had even just put down money on a new controller so we could enjoy more multiplayer. I guess I can forget that plan. I doubt I'll get this thing back from MS before Christmas, and there's no way in hell I'm spending a penny on a new system.

Yeah, I probably won't be buying another Microsoft console after this generation.

My Elite just bit the dust after getting an hour or two into Assassin's Creed II. E74. Console is out of the one year warranty, but I believe the E74 is covered by three years. I bought my current system in Jan 2008, so I think I'm covered.

Going to get it repaired, finish off ACII and sell it. Had enough of doing this bullshit every 18-24 months.

Yes, you are.

Received a 360 which was supposedly brand new but when I registered the serial online, it says the warranty will expire on 08/08/2010.

Does that mean it was purchased nearly 4 months ago?
I'm in a similar situation. I bought mine back in Oct '07 from Frys.com (See here for the deal) and my console gave me 3 Red Lights today. I went on line to register to get it repaired and they had the warranty expiration date listed as 2/24/2007. The date on the back on the console said it wasn't even manufactured until 9/8/2007. So now I have to send a copy of my receipt in to get it corrected.

Got the RROD for the 4th time!!! That's it. I'm done. I don't care how much DD stuff I got on the system. I can't keep doing this. It's insane. What sucks is I just got DJ Hero used two weeks ago for $60 and was loving it. Now I gotta turn around and buy it for PS3. Not to mention all my guitar Hero/Rock Band instruments are on 360.

Fuck it. I'll just trade in a bunch of games and buy a new one. I'm cursed. (:-(

Is it still under warranty? If it is, send it back, then sell it when it's returned to you. Will take a lot of the sting out of the cost of a new one.

It was repaired at a local shop 4 months ago. Killing the Warranty. That was a small thing where the video wasn't coming in but the sound was. Then, 4 months later, Error 74.

Gotta say I'm really impressed with the service and turnaround on this. I sent it off on Thursday afternoon last week, and it was returned yesterday. Fair enough, they shouldn't break and have to be sent off in the first place, but it's good to see Microsoft do take it seriously enough to give a good service.

Got my first RROD a few days ago, and I am going to ship the unit for repairs next week. Quess what, though? I immediately caved in and bought a new Elite. I didn't even think about it - I'm that addicted to Modern Warfare 2, and since I'm going to spend the christmas with my family ( naturally taking the Xbox 360 with me ), I just couldn't fathom the idea of a christmas-vacation without a working unit.

So there, I will - eventually - have two Xbox 360's. I'll probably keep the other console as a secondary unit if the same thing happens again.

I just got freezing and checkerboard. I think this is number eight.

Oh well. I'll probably just leave it alone for a while before getting it fixed. I have stuff I need to get done anyway. One less distraction I guess.

Hahahaha I spoke far too soon... I take it all back. Just turned it on, was fine... But the damn thing won't connect to any controller. Tried different ones, different batteries, and turned it off - taken Hardrive off, etc. Nothing! Not happy!

My Elite just died today. The Microsoft website says my warranty is expired but it list the cost of the repair as $0 (I have the 3 rings). Do the new consoles die like this? I can't fathom waiting what I'm sure will be a long time to get it back.

it was a good run. i thought i was untouchable having gone this long. it had been acting up for about a month now. i guess MW2 pushed it over the edge.

question: if i buy an elite, can i put my old 20gig hd on the new elite and play all my shit? or will it get funky with me regarding serial numbers and whatnot?

The turnaround isn't that long, probably a week or so.

mine just died, E74 error.

Its a refurb purchase from gamestop after my 3rd xbox that died a couple of months ago.

And I just lost my job.

love '09 :D

You've resynced the controllers?
Yeah. :(

I've tried two of them. I've changed batteries. I've unplugged every part of the machine and put it back. I can't get anything to sync for love nor money. Anything else I should try anyone... Before, it gets packed off again to Mr Microsoft?

Erm ignore me, haha was being a complete dickhead and forgot about the button on the controller. I take it all back, and now I'm going to go and hide, still wanted to confess to my stupidity!!

Welp, my launch unit went RRoD on me Saturday. Had it in for repairs once before (the week before Gears of War came out) and I'm assuming being a launch system, I'm well out of the warranty range.

Weird thing is that it started working again yesterday, but gave me the RRoD this morning. Thinking of trying the towel trick to get it working long enough to trade it in towards a new system. How reliable/safe is the towel trick? And is that a dick move to do? :lol

Will I get my same console back? I'm worried that I will get a refurbed one that is older without the hdmi input.
They will send you back a unit that has the same specs as the one you sent in. Drives may be different, but the core hardware is identical.

I know It sucks (I've been there once), but you seem overly jaded about hardware failures. You just had one failure that was under a warranty and it will cost you nothing. Are you telling me that before this incident, every single peace of technology has worked without flaw or failure and has cost you nothing? I suspect PRRODD! Post-Red-ring-of-death-depression. :)

Got my console back, and they fixed the disc drive even though that wasn't warranty covered. They removed the Apple sticker on the side (from an iPod).:lol

However, whilst it was gone someone in my family broke my faceplate. The power button is pushed in and sync button completely gone. So I have to get a new one of them somehow.

sounds like they gave you a replacement unit, IE not your original
I'm fairly sure it is the same unit. It has a fairly large black mark down the back.

Although it looks like they also attached new little rubber feat, all but 2 were missing when I got the xbox.

RRoD is covered under the extended 3 year warranty. I was in the same boat, but CS cleared up the situation for me.

What the hell? My little brother sent his unit out on January 2nd, and they just reported that they received it on the 12th. I hope we get it back by the end of the week.

well, perhaps they gave you a new case. i just find it hard to believe they'd take the time to remove your sticker. that in fact sounds like some form of violation they'd be wise to avoid. so i suspect they had some functional reason to do it.

Check the Serial number.

Same as the one I have registered on xbox.com. Also looks like the sticker with the serial number has been put on over the top of another sticker.

It wouldn't have taken much to remove my Apple sticker though.
Maybe I should sue them.
not really

Well, "my" 360 didnt die, it just left the house when its owner moved out. so technically its not dead, just dead to me.

which brings me to my question....

I wont be able to replace it before Jan(more like Feb). I have been looking at those LE MW2 bundles. Anybody have a clue as to how long they will be around

They repaired mine and everything, but I dunno where the fuck it is! UPS tracking has been at "Status: Billing Information Received " since Sunday!

I really wanna play.

My 360 seems to be dead unless anyone has a suggestion. It plays fine when using the composite/standard def/yellow video cable, but with the component video with the switch on either HD or SD I just get a black screen. I tried my VGA cable, and that gives a screen just pink and grayscale. Anyone have any ideas? I suppose there's the solution of playing in SD over composite. I've tried multiple TVs so that's not the problem.

BTW, I bought mine at launch and it was repaired/replaced (I could never tell) for RROD under the 3 year warranty which is now expired.

Well I got my refurb back, no video and the controller won't sync. Any ideas?

Edit: I found this and it sounds like my problem.

POSSIBLE SOLUTION: The EXACT same thing that is happening to you guys is happening to me - not connecting, but recognizing the controller was there, even with play/charge kit it wouldn't connect, resync wouldn't connect and the Xbox even turned itself off after a few mins. However I had changed from HDMI to a SDTV, and I hadn't changed to the mode on my HDTV to the game mode (to play xbox) and the second I changed it (like literally split second) it turned on, I saw the Xbox start logo go, then my controller synced. I think the xbox wasn't actually turning on fully to the point of the startup where it connects to the controllers, and it needed to recognize what definition it was going to boot in, so when I changed the TV to my xbox mode it was it was back in HDMI from SD and then booted correctly.

So If I'm using HDMI do I need to reset something the factory might have done?

I feel like this is actually quite common. I honestly feel no negativity towards the idea though. I've felt like doing the same.

...but you're screwed if you can't get a controller to connect.

I think my problem is the 360 is not actually on, the HDMI is not letting it turn on fully. It's like I have the TV off and the when you do that the 360 will not turn on, but it will make noise like it is on (just have zero green in the ring). Since its not really on, the controller will not sync.

I will try playing with some combination of turning the TV and 360 on and see if I can get the order right.

I got further. I started and restarted using the controller (so it was sync'ed?, maybe this was my old console?) I saw it get the splash screen, then go black. Another time it got as far as asking for the language, then going black. After a few more restartes I got all the way in, but it said my HD was not connected. I re-seated it and got my GT back. It worked fine for about an hour and I turned it off.

Flaky refurb or just the HD not being in all the way?

Ptthhbt! So there Mr. High & Mighty. :lol

Occasionally, when I power up my console, I'm missing colors. The dashboard looks washed out, like there's too much contrast, and everything is in shades of green. If I leave the machine on and try to play something, my screen will occaisionally go black then come back. Happens more frequently until I reboot. That always solves the problem. This has happened 3 or 4 times in the last few weeks.

However, lately it looks like im getting more of the contrast problem. All the colors look washed out now.

I know it's not my TV, as my PS3 doesn't have the same issue. I am running that via HDMI versus component on the xbox.

Anyone see this issue before their xbox imploded? Am I in trouble?

Man, I bought the original Xbox, but decided to go for the PS3 for whole hardware reliability issue. At the time the 360 had the better games, but of what use are great games if your system is broken and you can't play them?
