Got my fourth fricken 360 in from Microsoft. This refurb is even hotter and louder than the last, but you know, as long as it works I don't even care anymore. This is where Microsoft has set my standards. Why must such a horribly, horribly designed piece of hardware be blessed with such great games?
You know hotter is a good thing right?

Heatsinks are making better contact with the CPU/GPU cores and more heat is expelling out of the system.

Some of you people need to learn about how cooling systems work.

This is like the time I asked a Fry's Electronics clerk about which hard drive enclosure to buy.

He told me the plastic one is better than a metal enclosed one since it won't get hot. So so so wrong. Heat is not expelled = Frying Hard drive.

Mine is still working perfectly, however did anybody else get their exact system case back? (same serial and manufacturing date).

My computer, MSN messenger all see it as a completely different machine.

I have no clue if I have the same hardware or they just threw new stuff into my old case....

And if I got one of the smaller nm revised Falcon configs it wouldn't need to pump out as much heat. Again, I don't care as long as it's working.

I was just going to post this. I just got mine delivered to me here at work and lo and behold, same exact serial # and manufacturing date. And also, aside from your question, does this confirm that MS isn't really checking to see if the 3 RROD claim is legit (I only had 2, so it was probably just a fan that conked out on me)? Thing is, I was supposed to be charged for any repair that wasn't the 3 RROD since I am out of warranty, but I wasn't.

Man, this sucks... I never thought I'd want the RROD, but no video/no rings is an even crappier situation. I'm trying to get used to the fact that I might have to pay Microsoft to fix this stupid thing. I'd go buy a newer Arcade system, but while I can afford it, I don't want to pay an extra $200.

just force the RROD using a towel

You will likely not be able to cause RROD with a towel unless you throw it in an icebox shortly thereafter. The most of the RRODs is caused not by overheating but from the stress of heating and cooling causing the motherboard to flex (and subsequently flex causing the connections to fail)

Am I a bad person for buying a falcon because I couldn't wait for mine to get fixed and then plan to sell my "fixed" one on ebay?

My third coffin was just delivered via UPS today. I'll be dropping it off. Hopefully I'll get this thing back before Rez comes out.

O.K., I'm officially confused. I thought that MS extended everyone's warranty to three years. I got a letter from them a couple of months ago letting me know that my origianal 2 year extended warranty was extended again to 5 years. I thought the extra three applied to everyone so that all 360s were covered until at least Nov 2008?

If this is true I'll feel a lot better. I was really afraid that I was going to get some noisy refurb in exchange for my reasonably quiet launch box. I just got off the phone with customer service and they said the turnaround would be two to three weeks. Is that pretty acurate?

3 years for RROD only.

According to some people you're a sucker and should sell everything and buy a different console but I'll just end up saying I understand.

I understand. I did the same thing.

The only person you're hurting is yourself so I don't think you're a bad person. And I suppose you're hurting Microsoft in a small way because hopefully they still lose money on manufacturing 360's. So in a way, you're a hero.

Or lie like I did. I actually tried the towel trick but my issue was a busted fan or something and my 360 wasn't generating any heat at all.
How did the lying go? I may have to go down that path as I'm getting blue artifacts but no RROD and I'm outside my normal one year warranty.

My video went out on my system (which is not covered under the RRoD warrenty) and I got no red lights whatsoever. The first time I called I was quoted a $100 repair charge for it not being under warrenty. I simply called back a day or two later and said the system red ringed and just listed off the symptoms that all the red ring videos showed (sparatic starts, sometimes no video at all before red ring, ect) and now I have my system back working like a champ free of charge.

So to answer your question quickly.....pretty damn well.

THREE people I know had their 360s die over the weekend. My roommate's, a friend, and another friend. Ironically, two of those were on the SAME DAY (playing Halo 3, too).

I turned on my roommate's Xbox to start some Lone Wolf, and saw the three red lights.

Me: "Uh oh."
Roommate: "..."

:lol

Thought I'd share my story here:

My girlfriend and her friend came to visit me over break. One night, her friend gets hammered and passes out in my room. I wake up, go in to check on her and everything is unplugged from my wall and her phone charger is in. Even though the power strip it was all plugged into had an open spot or two.

Ring of death. I blame her.

Awesome - much appreciated :)

welp, had to send my 360 i just got in july in today. errr, CALLED it in today, who knows when ill get it.

my question is this: i have another 360 which i tried to repair myself (and failed miserably!) do you think i could also call it in and get it passed without them noticing the warranty sticker is removed from inside? anyone know how closely they look at the systems? :D

It went swimmingly. MS may ask you to verify the 3 red lights when you're on the phone putting in your repair order but just bullshit them like I did. I got my console returned to me with what I assume is new guts and it's working fine. My friend tells me this is somehow a big deal in that it means they are not just picking up a crusty refurb from a pile and swapping.

Forget about it. They check this out as soon as they get the console. Opened means they won't even touch it.

lol, I'm telling the truth. We all went to the bar, came back, her friend was hammered and I told her she could sleep in my room. I wasn't gonna cheat on my girlfriend with her friend while she was in the same house. That's just asking to get caught.

Not in the slightest. I did exactly the same thing. Let someone else worry about it.

I got my 360 back yesterday from MS, I sent it in because I was getting a DRE about every hour or so.

Doesn't look like anything has changed with the unit itself, same one I had before, and the drive is just as loud as it was. I won't know until this weekend if it's actually fixed or not...

so you only cheat on her when she isn't around?

I think it's a good thing too. Pretty much ensures you're getting the new heatsink I would think.

Thanks for the info :)

damn, I was hoping for a record return.

I sent mine in on Monday and they had it by tuesday AM. I am still getting the "have your xbox, currently repairing message". i guess they are not just instantly sending a replacement out when they receive the old 360 in Canada.

Some strange anecdotes.

Everybody in the delivery industry appears to be very familiar with Xbox returns.

The UPS guy said, "here's your empty box for returning your Xbox" when he dropped it off.

At the UPS store the staffer said they've been getting 2-3 a day. And that she's been noticing the boxes for the past six months.

My brother works for Puralator (Canada's UPS) and he shares the same anecdotes. He says for every 100 things he delivers, 5 are usually a 360. To him that's a huge percentage. Everyday, 5 people get a coffin or a Xbox 360 on his route alone.

1st Xbox Died

Febuary 2007
April 2007
November 2007
January 19th 2008....

Im really starting to find out why Microsoft are so bad with their cheaply made products, come on four consoles! no one should have to deal with that. even with the 3 year warranty it still not covering up the stink you have made im glad i never bought an original Xbox

my Ps2 lasted me 5 years and didnt give me half the problems 360 has, Ps3 is still going fine but ive just finished Uncharted so nothing to play atm

Yeah, I had the same thing happen. I dropped my 360 off at a UPS store, and the guy said "set your 360 over here on the counter". I laughed, and he said, "dude, I get about 10 of those things in here every day."

I was home when the FedEx guy dropped the refurb off at my house, and he asked if I knew how Microsoft was having people send the broken ones in, because he only delivered (6 so far that day!) but never picked them up. He seemed bewildered once I informed him that MS uses UPS for pickups, but FedEx for deliveries.

I can easily believe Microsoft is spending billions on this disaster.

Count me in for 3 dead units. My Sept 07 unit is displaying all weird. (My 2nd did the same thing, which lead to no video at all and the eventual RROD.) Anyone successfully made the switch from 360 to PS3 without any major 360 withdrawal symptoms? :-/

I still have my 360, but I've successfully made the switch to the PS3 being my primary, that's for sure. I thought I'd miss achievements, but I don't. I made the switch after my 3rd RROD and haven't looked back. I only plan on buying 1 360 game all of 2008: Lost Odyssey.

I got a PS3 when my 360 died just before Christmas. I enjoyed playing on it but there was something missing that I just can't put my finger on. I dunno what it is, I just feel more 'involved' on the 360.

Anyways, when I got my 360 back the PS3 didn't get a look in - I really missed it!

Seeing as my replacement 360 has died after the comically short period of one week, I am back on to the PS3 :/

LOL, so you don't know that MS started the coffin thing on the Xbox? A lot of the 1st year Xbox failed when Xbox Live was launched. DDE's where common with the original Thomson drives too.

And yes MS refurbished my launch Xbox twice. It is the reason I stayed away from the 360 at launch. Would have gotten one before a Falcon if the 360 hardware was not complete crap.

Well here's my story.

My fiancee's uncle bought a 360 xmas 06', he played it twice in all the time he had it.

I bought it from him Nov 07', been playing pretty much everyday since then and last week the DVD decided to stop working ( I think the motor broke), DVDs won't spin anymore.

Checked the warranty on M$ site and it ended Nov 07' (go figure).
The good thing is, my fiancee's uncle took an extended warranty at the store, so it's still under that warranty and i'm getting it replaced :D

Maybe Europe didn't have that issue. Like I said, until this thread I'd never heard of anything.
