"My Xbox 360 Died and I Lived to tell the story" Official Thread

jan-23-2008.jpg

My second one... First one came december 06 with a lunch 360... thing one came this morning with my referbed launch 360. ha.

I got my refurb early this morning before I went to work.

I didn't have much time to look, but where do I find the build date on my refurb?

I looked on the back but it seems like the info was all blank. It almost looked like they put another sticker on the backside with no info on it. I'll have to see when I get home.

My second RLOD now, it worked when I restarted it. Even though it'll probably freeze if I try to play.

Anyho, the guy at the support was nice this time. He told me he'd send it away as a console with occasional RLOD or something.

But I'm gonna be pissed if they send it back to me.

got mine back yesterday with a 9/21/07 mfr date.

my original had a jan 06 mfr date i think. it was a retard 360 with the white drive plate. they sent me one with a white drive plate also.

this one seems a bit quieter but its been so long since i've played that i'm probably just psychologically fooling myself.

My second console is dieing right now, and I got them (through three incredibly aggravating phone calls) to process the repair order, but I'm worried about it just getting sent back to me. I'm getting the RROD, but sometimes it's around 1/10 times I turn it on, and other times it's more like 6/10 times I turn it on. The lady on the phone was pretty adamant about suggesting that if they can't get the RROD they'll send it back unrepaired.

What do you guys think?

If it was made in 07 you're not. They have the quieter disc drive and the falcons.

I'd be worried. Mine is red ringed, but completely. Its 100% bricked. Nothing works about it. I thought thats how all red ringers were. This is my second one exchange now...

My 3rd XBOX (2nd refurbished replacement) just RRoD'd. First one was a launch one that died some time in 06, can't remember when but I remember it only took like 2 weeks total from the time I placed the call until I got it back, then again in September 2007 and it took 6 weeks to get back and now today. It died in the same exact way all three times: random lockups for 1-2 weeks before the RRoD, then once the RRoD occurs, I can turn it off for awhile and when I turn it back on it'll work fine for up to five minutes before freezing again, eventually RRoD on every power up. I fully expected it to fail again and fully expect it's replacement to fail again too, it's unfortunate that's it's come to the point where an XBOX 360 owner has to shell out extra money for a spare to be able to play uninterrupted.

The customer service tech I talked to said since this is my third they would expedite the shipping and repair. Bah, whatever.

Yeah, I'm a bit worried about that too. I've got the RLOD like five times out of maybe forty or fifty restart or something like that. But it freezes a lot of the times though.

Mine didn't RROD all the time and I had no issues. This was extremely recent too (Like a week ago :lol)

I got my 360 back today and its uhhh, the same system?

The serial number is the same. I wrote my down before I sent it in.

Well it works for now, but I still have this damn launch system which has been fixed but for how long? :/

I'm guessing they slappped on the heat sink and sent it back?

Be grateful you don't have to deal with the DRM stuff. It really is a nightmare.

I won't waste everyone's time with my tales of woe -- machines sent back that RROD on their first boot-up, snotty support guys telling me I'm lying, etc. my house LITTERED with 360 boxes (retail and return) and various dead units kicking it in every nook and cranny of my home...

But I will ask this question. My current working 360 sounds like a jet airplane at nearly all times. So bad that over Xmas break I actually kept it OUTSIDE (go wireless controllers), since there is an rain-protecting overhang just outside my basement windows.

I'm now considering buying a new system to get some HDMI goodness, so here's my question: are any of the current systems (Arcade, Elite, normal) QUIETER at this point? I have to confess I haven't been keeping up on the latest 360 hardware news as I've been on hold with India in nearly all my spare time since the Halo beta dropped (the same day my launch system bit it).

Lastly, is there any reason to go Elite other than BC, blackness, and larger HDD? All are powerful motivators, of course... but is it, you know, less fscking loud?

I just put a note in mine that said I'm getting this sometimes, but not all the time. I had NEVER gotten the RROD. It just froze up after approximately 10 minutes of playing anything. So I just told them that and they fixed it and sent me a new one.

Fan noise is far less on the falcons... to the point where I would actually call them quiet. To the best of my knowledge it's potluck on the DVD drive though, which is probably what you find noisy.

Exactly what you said on the elite, but falcons have been harder to get on that model. (not sure if it's still the case as stock seems to have run out in a lot of places)

Well after a nightmare with Purolator losing my 360 (Funny enough the guy was able to find it once I said it was an XBOX as he knew what the box looked like) I got a

MFG 09-2006 with a Hitachi drive : (

What's weird is the unit looks freaking new and so far I find the Hitachi rather quiet. Also there is a fuck-ton of heat coming out the back....I hope that is a good thing.

Time to look up how to tell if they added the heatsync

Just got my first RROD on my Dec 2005 unit :[ It's been with me so long...

I've never really looked into it, but is there any way to assure I get a better console? Isn't there like a new chipset or something that I should try to get?

Well after feeling like a fucking retard taking pictures of the inside of my XBOX, I can answer with a definate maybe that I have the added heatsync.

There is something between the side and the DVD but I do not see copper.

The drive does seem louder, but I think I am focusing on it now.

Damn you old ass refurb giving MS :D

As mentioned, it actually looks brand new which is kinda weird.

Same thing happened to me (although mine wasn't a launch unit, but I did get the same one back), but it acts like a new system with the DRM stuff for some reason.

I'm going to do this... Thanks. I hope it works. Well, I hope it doesn't work... that would save me the worry.

Last week i sent my 360 in for repair because it scratches discs. 2 days ago or so i allready got it back but i don't think they fixed anything.

I got the same console back from repair and in the shipping box there was a piece of paper included where they say what specific part of the console has been repaired.

there are 5 boxes they can select:

-Disc-drive
-controller ports
-motherboard
-power supply
- other

In my case they selected "other"... WTF microsoft... I ask them to fix my dvd-drive because it scratches disc and they fix something else.

Is it fixed? i dunno. Guess i'm gonna find out when another game is scratched to death...

Hmm, I didn't get anything that said which part was fixed. All I got was a free month of Live.

Something I noticed while trying to get the DRM nonsense straightened out--the serial number on the physical console is the same of the one I sent in, yet the one listed under the system info blade is completely different. So I'm guessing they gutted my box and put in a new chip set/board/heatsink/whatever was broken. I didn't have the RROD, just constant screen freezing.

-edit-

Talking to support now and apparently they can transfer the DRM license from an old system to a new one, but it takes 30 days...?

My Launch X360 (manufactured on Oct 18th, 2005) died on me yesterday when I turned it on after work to download the DMC4 demo. Strange thing is that I hadn't used it since Sunday when it worked very well for a couple of hours of Half-Life 2.

Called the hotline, talked with a very nice guy. They are coming to get my Box on Monday.

I just lost Xbox 360 number two. What a piece of shit.

Just out of curiosity, after your first 360 died do you know if it had the new heat sink installed? I just sent mine away on friday and I'm curious as to whether or not the heat sink is a real cure or if this is just going to be the new cycle for me :/

This one was a replacement for the one that failed in 2006. When it failed the first time, they were still claiming 90 days was a perfectly fine warranty period.

I bought mine in 2006, played it for a few months, and haven't touched it since. Perhaps I need to play it to death before my warranty is out.

EDIT: Has there been a lawsuit filed against MS about this yet? I know that MS extended their warranty, but this is still ridiculous.

Fuck.

I just got the 3 red lights. I've had my 360 since summer 06. For some reason I thought this would never happen to me. I figured all the rest were due to people with poor air circulation. I was wrong.

Well I'm damn glad they extended the warranty and theres no better time for a 360 to die than a month or two after the game rush.

i still have my premium that broke in december sitting in my room, i just cannot be fucked with the hassle of phoning support for the 4th time.. sigh

They tried that one with me as well man. It's a bunch of BS. I even spoke to a manager (Called back 30 days later) and told him the guy basically flat out lied to me about how after 30 days I'd have my games back, in reality it's all marketing lingo based on their DRM licensing and the chances are you won't see jack. I have two games I need to be online for to play and it pisses me off. You are getting the run around.

They need to sort this DRM crap out, especially with the way these systems are choking. Luckily in my case it was a system I returned to the store within 30 days and now have a newer 07 HDMI Pro but if I "Lose" all 35 of my Live Arcade titles to online only play I will be pissed to high hell.

Just called support to check the status of my 360 to find that is being sent back to me. The assistant was even able to tell me I was getting a different system back. FUCK!!!!!!!. Do all arcade games have an option to play with the "guest" profile??? I won't mind so much if other profiles can't play the games, but being able to play with some other human in the fucking house would be nice!!!!

I'm hoping I get my system back, but I will give them hell if I get a different system and they don't fix my DRM issues. I have a lot of arcade titles, and while I'm usually on Live anyhow, I don't want to be screwed out of playing them when the service is down.

So yeah my 360 just died. So what do I do now. I call for a box right. How much does that cost? Do I keep my hard drive?
Everything should be free and yes you get too keep you're HDD.

It wouldn't hurt to keep your faceplate aswell, I sent mine back with the faceplate on and it's arrived back with some scratches along the lower edge of it.

No biggy, I just cleaned it up and you don't really notice it unless you look for it. I would have been a bit annoyed if it had remained visible though.

My launch system (Born Halloween of 2005) is no more.

Funny thing, I started the checkerboard freezing for the first time a few hours ago, but the damn system wouldn't red ring. So I just kept forcing the freezes until it did. But then it wouldn't red ring consistently. So I put in the most graphically intense games I had, then switched over to the DMC4 demo and... success! It red rings on start every time now. I am overjoyed.

Send me my fuckin' coffin, Microsoft.

Well, Console #3 is fucking dead. It red ringed over the weekend so I turned it off and It was working after the 45 minutes of being on hold with MS, only to get the promise of a CALL BACK . Since this is my third fucked 360 they escalated me to a supervisor, who escalated me to someone else, who called me monday morning. The system worked well enough through the weekend, luckily, before finally crapping out for good last night. Just so happens the coffin got to me yesterday as well.

As a life long time gamer I've come to understand that being an early adopter of a console most likely means you're going to replace it sooner than later, especially considering how much I game, and I'm cool with that. But 3 dead consoles in 17 months is fucking ridiculous. This one lasted 9 months which is more than twice as long as my other two, but has been dying for a while. It began reading games intermittently, and when I would open the disc tray even after going back to the dashboard the game would still be spinning REALLY fast. And the noises the thing made were the things of nightmares.

I don't know, I might just be at my end. Even though it was a good thing it crapped out now, when theres not a lot of games coming out, if this were any where around April 29th(GTAIV) people would be dying in the streets. I'm seriously thinking about taking the new console they send me and trading it in towards a PS3. While I love the 360 to death as a gaming platform, I need hardware I can rely on above all.
