Back then, with all the controllers and games I had it went for a pretty good amount. I forget the number, but I remember that on the whole I only lost some 200-250 dollars for having played the games for a year and some. So at less than a dollar a day, I felt pretty good.

The guy that bought it wanted to open it up and see if he can fix it, one of the brave guys. I gave him the receipt, and everything I had, what he did I don't know. Maybe he paid the 129 and had it fixed himself.
 
It's official, my 3rd Xbox died today ... 6/24/06. Damn these Microsoft refurbs! PS3 is looking quite nice now :(

Funny thing was though I called the CS # and was arguing with the woman over the phone that my games kept freezing. She was about to charge me $99 because my 360 was out of warranty and no 3RROD yet, so I turned it off and waited 30seconds, then it froze during startup, did it one more time and I got the red death. She then apologized to me and said it'll be a free "repair". Now awaiting coffin.
 
My 360 has had problems for awhile. It can't read any of my discs and says "To play this disc, put in an Xbox 360 Console." My warranty is out. Would it be a good idea to get a RROD to get a free repair?

I just had a bit of a freak out as my 360 just shut off for no reason. Nothing else in my house seemed to lose power. It's working still but damn if I'm not pissed. Two hours of Blue Dragon, lost!
 
I went to bed and my xbox was working fine and turned it on this afternoon and it's no busted. This is now my 6th RROD...what's the towel trick?
 
Wow... I've always seen this thread and wondered what lurked inside. Yesterday, I began to play COD4 for the first time. Today, no dice. Manufactured 11/30/2005. My very first RROD. Why do people call customer service? It took me 2 seconds to order my coffin online.

For some reason, I don't hate Microsoft right now. Maybe it's because I just finished Mass Effect and hadn't gotten very far in COD4. Maybe it's because a friend lent me his copy of No More Heroes and my Wii still works (though my first one had already broken and was replaced). I suppose the anger begins when the refurb blows up?

It works though you'll need some wax/nonsticky paper to keep the sticker healthy.

Is that safe? The front of the system is completely unobstructed, and so is the back, which is the most important vent IIRC, so I assumed that the slight restriction in air flow for the side vents was ok, but I'm not entirely sure.

And I thought I should also mention that it isn't in my entertainment center because I was told by 360 owners that it would definitely cause my 360 to overheat.

That's like my setup. Mine has been running w/ no problems for ~6 months.

I always save like a madman if the game lets me when I'm playing on 360. Unfortunately, a lot of games don't have a save anywhere feature. :[

I've been told and have read that if you put your 360 in the vertical position, you increase the chances of overheating.

There is no evidence supporting that one way or the other. I kept my 360 horizontal. It died after 2 years. My friend has a dec 05 console sitting vertical for 2 1/2 years, no problems.

yes i have been told and agree with that.

the vents are on the side of the system, you need those vents clear and open as much as possible. dont put your 360 in vertical stand.

There are holes on every side of the thing except the face. Any way you sit it, you'll be covering something up. The important part is keeping it in an open area with space between it and your other stuff.

the back side push the air from inside the system out

the vents on both sides for the air to come inside the system. if you put it verticaly, you close one side.


2 sides open better one.

Where's your power brick?
 
I have a PAL 360 and I imported Lost Odyssey recently. Got to disc 4 and it just DRE's more or less constantly on thet disc now. Sometimes I can get a fewhours in. Other times its more or less as soon as I load a game up. Only game it does it on. And it works fine on my bros 360 :(
 
ok, I have another question. This is going to entail a lot of description, and I don't really feel like drawing another awesome diagram.
that home entertainment center my 360 is standing vertically on... I was wondering if I might be able to put my 360 inside it instead, despite being advised against it. When horizontally oriented, the 360 is 12 inches long, 3 inches high, and about 9 inches wide. A compartment in my home entertainment center, on the other hand, is 20 inches long (26 inches if you count the extra 3 inches of space on each side that are covered in the front), 4½ inches high, and 18 inches wide. It's open in the front, but there is only a small, 3½ inch wide, 2 inch high slot for leading cables in the back. I've heard that positioning the 360 horizontally significantly reduces noise, and in my setup, it would eliminate the possibility of the 360 falling to the floor, so if my home entertainment center wouldn't suffocate it, it would be a much more ideal arrangement. And if this home entertainment center wouldn't work, do you think one with a completely open back would?
 
I have mine in a similar sounding entertainment unit, horizontally. Mine doesn't have anything on the back though so there's a free flow of air through it.

Oh... and on a general note, discussion in the past has pointed to the main issue with the 360 not being overheating, but more to do with hot / cold cycles. I pretty much leave mine on all day to watch movies etc and so I don't need to power it on for games and I've never had a problem with it. I do leave it on the dashboard for 5 or so mins after playing a game to let it cool if I'm going to turn it of though.
 
Here's my set-up. Buy Gears of War™. The PS3 expels air primarily from the right side of the unit, while the 360 blows it out of the left, which is very convenient for users trying to store both on the same shelf. The Wii is always cool; totally unexposed to hot air expelled from either system. Both systems need their back vents unobstructed, but I wouldn't be concerned about obstructing air flow by positioning either system vertically. I'd be more concerned about the 360's DVD drive failing in some way due to use in the upright position than I would be about blocking the vent. And try to keep the power brick slightly elevated. Mine sits on a nest of thick wires, but it's above the carpet with all sides exposed to the surrounding air.

Vertical for me...open with room around it. It seems to me that placing it vertical seals off a smaller area than laying it horizontal especially since the sides get hotter than the bottom in this position anyway.

The horizontal footprint is cutting off ventilation to a larger surface area. Besides, the bottom IS getting a LITTLE space in there thanks to the rubber feet.

I lift it and dust under it once a week to be sure. :)
 
Just got my 360 back today. I am dumbfounded how fast they sent it back to me. Shipped to repair center on 2/22 and I got it back on 2/26.

They "repaired" my console which meant they replaced the DVD drive. It was no Falcon so I am kind of pissed especially since they had me send in my power brick.

At least it is the BenQ model. Let's take bets on how long this lasts...
 
So... my launch 360 has finally come unstuck, kinda. Not by three red lights but one red light and a E68 error message. Seems my hard drive has died before my console. Bummer.

So quick questions for anyone who has gone through this before:

1) Would I still be able to use a data transfer kit and transfer the data on my old HDD to a new one? I'm asking this more out of hope than expectation, admittedly.
2) If I jump through the customer service hoops and send my HDD back to Microsoft, do I get a brand new one or will my old one get fixed up?
3) If I get a brand new HDD, what happens to my gamertag, how do I 'recover' it?
4) Same for the old content I downloaded, will I be able to grab it again? I remember having issues trying to play certain XBLA titles (Double Dragon, Streets Of Rage 2) with my HDD on someone else's 360.
 
3 weeks ago i got my 360 back from the repaircentre (it scratched discs)
and now i'm gonna have to sent it back because i have 3 red lights....

I swear.... if that piece of shit system didn't have so many good games on it, i would throw it out of the window.

I would say around July 06 when I bought my 1st Elite. My coffin just got here btw, still deciding if I should keep the new Elite and make the refurb I receive my backup console.
 
My launch date premium has died for the second time. It was in my brother's room, as I bought an Elite last month and gave him my launch system. Gonna box it up and ship it back to MS on Monday.

On a related note, a friend in Uni got his console back on Monday (it was a UK launch system like my old one); only MS shipped a new system with HDMI and a new power brick and they told him to not use his current one, apparently. He has no reason to lie, though. I think he says it's 175w... that means they shipped him a Falcon, right?

I wonder if this is the norm now, or a special case...? This was his third repair since August 07, though.
 
Hey guys, I have a question about whether or not my console is fucked up.

Over the past week and a half, while playing it, the screen would get all blank and colors would appear all fucked up. Each time this happened, it got progressively longer. Last night, it happened and now it no longer works period.

The weird thing is the xbox is otherwise fine. The game continues to run, as I can hear the audio fine. It's not a cable issue, because I opened my brand new component cables (been using VGA since the beginning) and even those do not work (on a completely different screen).

Do I have a bad GPU, or something?
 
So I just got the red rings on my launch Xbox 360.

I am checking this forum to see how to proceed... any advice would help, thanks.
 
My 360 just got 1 RROD and I was on the phone with some guy who didn't know how to talk just to find out my warrantys gone and I have to pay $99.
I'm thinking about bringing my PSP back and paying the extra $99 so I can buy the arcade system + it comes with Turok.

My warranty is also gone, but since it was RROD they are paying for the repairs. Not sure why you have to pay.

That's just not correct. Three years for RROD, end of story. Ring back and get someone who knows what the fuck they're on about.

Unless when you say "1 RROD" you mean you're getting 1 flashing red quadrant. If that's the case then only your normal one year warranty applies. Best to try and give it 3 red lights or just lie to them and say it's 3 red lights.
 
Yeah, i'll just buy another XBOX 360.
But yeah, I did just get the 1 red quad.
Future Shop is having a deal (canada) that if you buy any XBOX 360, you get Turok free. Seems like a good deal.

Seriously though: yes it's fucked up, yes it's most likely related to the gpu, and yes you should call MS and start the process to get it repaired. Will probably cost you.

I had a 2nd 360 RROD in my house. This one was manufactured end of 06 I believe. Out it goes (again)

It really chaps my balls to no end that random people are getting brand new falcon consoles with HDMI and I am still getting refurbished or "repaired" consoles the FIFTH time around.

What makes not sense to me is that since I was a pain in the ass the last time, Microsoft overnighted everything to me FedEx (the coffin, the shipment, and the repair). What does Fed Ex overnight cost? When this repaired unit breaks (only a matter of time) they will probably do the same thing because I will be even more pissed than I was last time. Over the course of time all of this shipping & repairing will probably cost them more than a new falcon console cost them anyway. From a business standpoint and a customer service standpoint it does make an ounce of sense.

Also for the record, anyone claiming the BenQ drives are "super quiet" is full of crap.
 
I'm in Canada,my launch 360 got the RRoD,for the second time, last Friday and got a "certfied Xbox 360 replacement unit" this morning with a 1 month Gold card.Pretty fast if you ask me.
