N G Evangelion: I expected more

lol GL, another horrible anime. It gives a bad notion on how old mecha looks like, despite being touted by fans as such. And man I feel bad on how it influenced other shows (Shin Mazinger, tsk tsk tsk... you probably wouldn't have been that bad if it weren't for GL).

Aw shit. Tough call that one. Love em' both. o_O
You know it's true!
Just a wrong one!
Imaishi's FUCK AWESOME EXPLOSIONS > Anno's faux-symbolism
I can live with four >'s.
Every > equals one fun factor unit. Gurren Lagann is at least five times as fun as Eva
Kare Kano > Nadia > Re Cutie Honey > Evangelion

Just kidding. Or am I?!
Kare Kano before episode 20, yes.

What shows has Gurren Lagann influenced to begin with!!?
I have yet to see gurren lagann.... I'll assume that I should get on that soon.
Gurren Lagann is GAINAX's answer to Evangelion, since nobody else did it right after ten years.

Gurren Lagann is like if you took Eva, threw out all the whiny fuckers, added in heaps of awesome, cranked it up a few more notches, made it a little bit crazier still, then cranked it up to full blast and then a fucking atomic explosion happens in the background. Thats kind of underselling it, but you get the idea.

It's pretty boring and makes no sense. It has bad music and one of the characters wears sunglasses that are so obnoxious that it makes the entire show unwatchable.

But there's this:

I think I'll blindly follow your advice.... I still have monoke and a few other animes to watch first anyway...

I think Gunbuster is a little better than evangelion. It's the same Parody-style of gainax, but it actually has a well-developed storyline and likable characters. What i mean parody-style, is that Gainax takes a lot of cliches and trends in Anime and turns in into their own kind of art.

In the 90's, I thought Evangelion was really great, but then I when i sat around thought about it maybe 10 years later..... Is it really that good? Did they really adequately explain what happened and give closure to the story? No they didn't. Even EoE failed in that aspect.

I still don't really understand what happen at the End of Evangelion. Did they create heaven and Shinji, who had control of heaven somehow, destroyed heaven out of the hatred of his father? And what the hell are the Evas and angels? That was never really explained to me. Where did they come? What is the whole damn point of instrumentality? I hate it.

I hate strung along by episode and episode of subtle hints and clues, and then these clues are never resolved or the never amount to anything. I makes me feel like the writers did really have a plan or a vision when began writing their story. It's just like Battlestar galactica or lost.

Gunbuster doesn't actively fuck up with the audience and is not brimming with confusing imagery that only obfuscates the show's message, so that makes it inherently superior to Evangelion.

I don't really see how Shin Mazinger was influenced by Gurren Lagann.
Isn't she supposed to be fourteen?

Yes.

That's why I was joking. Well, that and Re Cutie Honey...

But the Anno-directed parts in each are good!
As I understand it Anno was really more of a producer on Re Cutie Honey. His hands were full with live-action Cutie Honey at the time.

Imaishi's episode of Re Cutie Honey is fantastic. Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt was entirely superfluous after that.

Am I the only one who never took 'religious symbolism' seriously at any point? I can't really defend it outside of thinking it's awesome weird Japanese pulp stuff, but I knew not to read into them and they didn't confuse me.

You know that feeling where fanservice of any kind ruins a show for me? Yep, GL is a victim of that too. But I don't feel sorry.

Gurren Lagann really doesn't delve too far into fanservice outside of Yoko. At least I cant think of much. I mean it IS Gainax, and I certainly know better.
Personally I'm a bit more of a fan of Mahoromatic.

Yeah but the instant any series or movie breaks that out, I question the relevance of it.

Exactly. Gunbuster is a simple story--- a Heroine's Journey to find herself and realize her potential.... But Gainax executed that story so well.

By the end of it, everyone connects with Noriko. Everyone loves her and wants her to succeed. It was a hardcore sci fi space war film with great characters and real emotion. Why can't i get a story like that anymore?

It sounds like you should watch K-ON!. There's barely any of that fetishistic fanservice.

Oh no. There's plenty of fanservice ... it's just a different kind. A more dark and sinister kind, the kind that is poisoning all of Japan right now. Well, Personally I'm on the fence about all this "moe"crap, but meh.

I took it very seriously. I thought maybe it would end up being a critique of religion, or maybe it would a sci fiction explanation of the gospels. My head was filled possibilities, then I get to the last episode of Evangelion... :-(

I can't tell if you're being serious or not, cause I've never seen it.

Unless the series:

1. Has a story that is somewhat interesting and actually goes somewhere in a decent amount of time
2. Lacks fanservice
3. Isn't Gary Stu'd/Mary Sue'd all to hell

Then I won't watch them/continue watching past the beginnings.

K-ON! is the anime that is saving the anime industry.

Two out of three ain't that bad.

Re: Rebuild: The first movie was great and about as close as you can adapt tv anime into the big screen. That said I haven't mustered the interest to watch the second. From the sound of things I am not missing too much.

Gunbuster is like Gurren Lagann played straight, and both feel like philosophical opposites to Evangelion. Where Eva focuses on psychosis and inner turmoil and isolation, Gunbuster and GL highlight the power of man to work together and overcome problems. I like their positivity. Gunbuster especially takes the cliche of hard work and guts and fills it with an earnestness that made it really powerful. That show's optimism feels emblematic of Gainax of that era. Personally, I like that kind of thing more than what Eva aims for.

FLCL will always be my favorite, but I think that would veer pretty far off subject.

The only shit I tolerated from Gainax is His and Her Circumstance.

I don't really see how Shin Mazinger was influenced by Gurren Lagann.

GL has exaggerated character design, exaggerated attacks (oh god I hate that I TURN INTO HUGE FIST ATTACK), and the pointless Mary Sue family.

What shows has Gurren Lagann influenced to begin with!!?

Shin Mazinger felt like GL dropped shit on it. Not to mention the notion that "hurr old super robots are noisy and insane and GL revels on it!" on retarded levels.

Mary Sue family what?

Also GaoGaiGar had all of that shit. Not that I am suggesting GaoGaiGar started that trend.

I wish more anime had been influenced by Gurren Lagann. It sounds like I should check Shin Mazinger!

Have you seen:

Haibane Renmei
Kino's Journey
Twelve Kingdoms?

Ok the only one with a complex story is Twelve Kingdoms, but you'd like that one. The other two are more thought-provoking. But still very good.

I'm not quite sure that GL had much to do with any of that. Let's look at the directors other works for a moment:

Giant Robo: The Day the Earth Stood Stil
Mobile Fighter G Gundam
Tetsujin 28-go

There's a pattern in his directorial style which certainly has nothing do with Gurren Lagann and everything to do with his love for old 70's kung-fu movies and super-robot shows.
