N G Evangelion: I expected more

K-ON! is the anime that is saving the anime industry.

You are right from a technical standpoint, but I wish it were something else saving anime.

Re: Rebuild: The first movie was great and about as close as you can adapt tv anime into the big screen. That said I haven't mustered the interest to watch the second. From the sound of things I am not missing too much.

You're missing so much !

Naked Asuka ! Megane Mari ! Some of the best action sequences in the entire series, Moe Rei, Prototype test suits, HD Misato, etc ... You should watch it sometime !

Mary Sue family what?

Also GaoGaiGar had all of that shit. Not that I am suggesting GaoGaiGar started that trend.
I wish more anime had been influenced by Gurren Lagann. It sounds like I should check Shin Mazinger!

GGG didn't have obnoxious characters though, and it's actually more consistent with the Brave series.

You're just saying that to play with my undying hate for GL and Gainax!

I'm not quite sure that GL had much to do with any of that. Let's look at the directors other works for a moment:

Giant Robo: The Day the Earth Stood Stil
Mobile Fighter G Gundam
Tetsujin 28-go

There's a pattern in his directorial style which certainly has nothing do with Gurren Lagann and everything to do with his love for old 70's kung-fu movies and super-robot shows.

And it's where in Shin Mazinger shows where it couldn't fit (in particular the Kurogane family, too much pandering to that).

You're not missing anything, it's just a bad show all around. It hides behind a dense layer of meaningless religious symbolism and technobabble in a desperate attempt to hide how shallow and cliche it really is. Some of the imagery is neat though.

Can't be bothered to go into detail about it but pretty this, eva is still the worst anime I've watched and also gurren laggan is garbage outside of 3 or so great episodes.

Oh, ok. I haven't watched any of his live-action stuff...I'm too scared.

Did Imaishi do the first episode of Re Cutie Honey? I remember that one being the best of the three. The rest, eh.

edit: and I never watched P&Sw/G, due to not really caring much for Imaishi's style on the whole, so there's that.
Yeah, Imaishi did the first episode of R:CH. The only one worth watching.
You're not missing much in P&S. There's one really amazing episode and the rest is junk.
As for Anno's live-action movies...I'd prefer him pumping those out for the rest of his career to the current depressing reality of him wasting his time with Rebuild.
I took it very seriously. I thought maybe it would end up being a critique of religion, or maybe it would a sci fiction explanation of the gospels. My head was filled possibilities, then I get to the last episode of Evangelion... :-(
Ah.
Well, your reaction to the show makes a bit more sense to me now!
Re: Rebuild: The first movie was great and about as close as you can adapt tv anime into the big screen. That said I haven't mustered the interest to watch the second. From the sound of things I am not missing too much.
The second film is better than the first. It contains a few great moments.

I'm not actually sure what that means, could you explain?

You claimed that Gurren Lagann had influenced Shin Mazinger because:
"GL has exaggerated character design, exaggerated attacks (oh god I hate that I TURN INTO HUGE FIST ATTACK)"
"Not to mention the notion that "hurr old super robots are noisy and insane and GL revels on it!" on retarded levels."

I pointed towards the directors other (all pre-Gurren Lagann works) which all contain:

-Exaggerated character designs (All his works reference 70's style character designs, in fact he invented the 'modern-retro' trend with Giant Robo)

-Exaggerated attacks (remember the Shining Finger! from G Gundam or the BIB BANG PUNCH from Giant Robo)

-A distinct fondness for the wackier sides of Super-Robot shows (remember the windmill Gundams in G Gundam? The King of Hearts super love attack?)
...and the pointless Mary Sue family/ (in particular the Kurogane family, too much pandering to that)
I don't actually understand what that means. I mean, I literally don't know what you mean by it, and why it comes from Gurren Lagann.

Neon Genesis is a good series which suffered a certain kind production hell. The last two episodes of the original series are one of the worst endings I've ever seen in any anime. End of Evangelion is a pretty good ending even if it does disappear up its own ass. Its dark and bloody which is what the series demanded.

Can anyone else reccomend a good robot anime that tops Evangelion? Just curious.

He's trying to say that he's cool because he watches 70's anime and anything created in the last 10 years is crap. I hope that helps clear it up!

Shin Mazinger felt like GL dropped shit on it. Not to mention the notion that "hurr old super robots are noisy and insane and GL revels on it!" on retarded levels.

Guess I know what I'm watching next.

Time of Eve.

Hey, he never specified the kind of robot.

The Kurogane family kept appearing as this "mysterious badass family" that sidetracked the whole show, and when they made a reveal regarding the past it felt forced.

The exaggerated designs barely resembled anything from the 70's.

The exaggerated attacks in a way didn't feel so much off because they came out earlier or midway through the show. That rocket punch came out towards the end of the series.

Honestly I'm just harping on Shin Mazinger because it felt like it was influenced more to GL than anything else, especially with the fans of the latter being goddamn noisy.

The thing to do is watch a little of everything, crap and all.
That is the TRUE WAY.

Damn right!

He's trying to say that he's cool because he watches 70's anime and anything created in the last 10 years is crap. I hope that helps clear it up!

Actually 80's, 90's and some early 2000's too. Even if 90's suffered from stupid dark age of post-EVA crap.

But those were the days were crap like K-ON were NOT made!

Agreed %100. I watch every genre of anime from every age. Some good some bad, but in the end you expand your horizons and your knowledge.

FYI I still watch anime in the new tens (Digimon for instance). Some turned me off however (Toriko - oh god why are you censored and why do you have a shitty OG female character?).

Have you seen:

Haibane Renmei
Kino's Journey
Twelve Kingdoms?

Ok the only one with a complex story is Twelve Kingdoms, but you'd like that one. The other two are more thought-provoking. But still very good.

Nope, I haven't, but I'd be willing to give them a try.

I left, and mechaGAF shit all over this thread. I approve of the new change.

Shinji is a little bitch.

yeah.

At first, I felt sorry for the guy because of his asshole father.

By the end of it, I thought shinji was a annoying and a perv (ejaculation scene in the hospital). I couldn't connect with any of the characters except for toji and Rei.

and it supposedly it all ends having shinji Fuck-up Heaven on earth because he is a little brat?

Think about that for a minute. Imagine the Rapture comes, and you're in the most euphoric state of mind that you'll ever going to be in. You're so full of love, warmth and affection. Then it all ends because some little prick has daddy issues and wants to sulk in his own depressed world. Wow.......cool

You lose. Clearly Shinji or perhaps all of NGE is beyond your comprehension.

[End of Evangelion] spoilers

Masturbating to comatose girls does take some balls!

I remember when I was Shinji's age ...

Pretty good show. I think it really resonated with me more as a teenager though, and because I can relate to Shinji's father issues.

These days though I don't know if I would be a big fan of it. Same goes for Rahxehpon. I find the first half far to typical and filled with characters that aren't too exciting. The 2nd half is filled with very interesting plot developments, but these days a lot of it seems like its there to just be mysterious. I like End of Eva a lot, but it also seems like it just tries to be complex for the sake of it. It's like the show lacks subtlty. It's still great, but yes I do believe there is some overhype.

But I do say, please watch Giant Robo. That is one of the most well told Giant Robot anime I've ever seen. Extremly great story telling and what anime is all about.

Other good stuff:
Macross Plus
Guerrero Lagann
Macross 1

WHAT

Shinji isn't a "little bitch", he's suffering from crippling depression and just doesn't give a fuck. Shinji is basically Justine in Melancholia.

I think the main plot of Eva is pretty simple to get. I just think that it has a lot of fluff to make it seem more then it is.

But what do I know, haven't seen the show in a while. Not a big fan of the movies either.

I don't know if that's true. He dosent want the world to end. He cares about things and people. He just dosent know how to deal with them. He wants to kwow his father. He wants to be friends with Rei. Hell he wants to know why Rei has his fathers attention for a number of reasons. He even wants to figure out Asuka. But these people for whatever reasons are cold to him and that just discourages him.
