Naked Gun Trailer - August 1st.

Watched Hot Shots 2 recently. ABSOLUTELY holds up but mainly because its 5-10 jokes/gags a minute, non stop. So even if the hit rate is 50% it's still 2 laughs a minute. Super topical humor though, I had to explain every third joke to my kids :p
That reminds me, I need to see Hot Shots part one. I had the Hot Shots Part Deux VHS back when I was 9 or so and absolutely wore it out, probably watched it 100 times but never saw the first film. 🤦‍♂️

It actually got a few laughs out of me.

It's an attempt at comedy we haven't seen in years. Going by modern movies and modern humour, the young'uns are definitely not gonna get this hahaha.

I know Seth Macfarlane has a producer credit but I hope if he's involved it's more Ted and less A million ways to die in the west.

the trailer was meh, the end was funny but the stuff with Liam wasnt.

Pretty sure it will be a bust, but we'll see. they have to use the original music and intro as well

Guys, I know Leslie Nielsen was a more dramatic actor pre Naked Gun :messenger_grinning_squinting:

That doesn't change the fact I think Neeson is a weird choice for this. Also I fucking abhor anything Seth MacFarlane related.

I can count on ONE HAND the number of movies like this that are actually funny.

Just kidding...naked gun, air plane, blazing, young frank. etc, love all that corny stuff.

Will watch...but probably won't laugh as hard as I would 5 to 10 years ago.

Got a couple laughs from me, I'll try it. I generally like anything that Akiva is involved in.

Yeah I'm not sure....I guess I'll give it a chance.

I want to try to be less of a stuck up asshole, so I'm willing to give it a try, I just hope it makes me laugh.

It's really hard to top the original movies though...they just still make me laugh to this day.

99.99% of the humor used in The Naked Gun back then won't be allowed in today's Hollywood so this movie is going to be terrible and bomb

Here's an example of what wouldn't be allowed today:

Because when I think comedy, I think Liam Neeson

:messenger_dizzy:

Leslie Nielsen didn't start out a a comedic actor. He dabbled a bit but it was only after Airplane! did he get famous for it. Before that he mostly did serious roles, much like Liam Neeson. I think the parallel is interesting so I'm willing to give it a shot. I know my wife will want to watch it.
We'll make a date night out of it and regardless of the movie, we'll have sex after.

That scene was specifically mocking "The Crying Game" (which had a very similar reaction by the lead IIRC) so it was more of a movie moment spoof rather than a direct attack on trans (though there was a lot of that as well back then so maybe 50:50 :P)

And I'd argue it would still fly, even better if they could get a REAL trans actor that could actually pass for a female well enough that the dick would be a real surprise.

Frank being socially awkward and just getting lucky in his job as opposed to being good at it was the best thing about the series.

Taking that away seems to miss the point of Naked Gun.

That moment when you realize / are reminded that Liam Neeson is amazing actor, and can actually do comedy roles as well.

Not gonna lie, I LIKED this trailer very much.

Much like all of these sort of things.
Id have preferred if it was just an original cop comedy with Liam neeson and nothing to do with naked gun.

Tbh, I feel like Neeson's competent takedown in that scene is the most telling thing. The OG Frank got through by luck and chance, despite ineptitude. I'd rather have seen Neeson reveal he'd gone to the wrong bank or make the shot, but only because he was trying to run away, tripped and accidentally ended up aiming in the right direction, etc. Etc.

If it gets good reviews I'll give it a go, but I think comedy in general is about the hardest genre to get right, trying to reboot something with a load of baggage from 20 years ago is likely going to make it harder, not easier.

Make Drebin's son a badass instead of lucky buffoon is a pretty big gamble, the buffoonery was pretty much the point of the original series/films.

I'm in -- I was really rolling my eyes at the start of the trailer, but the wall of dead dads, and the OJ joke got me pretty good. I hope it's more like that, and whatever that intro was was either A) just for the trailer, or B) some kind of dream sequence

I suppose if you were going to do one of these then Neeson can do a fun deadpan and that makes for about as good a choice as you could hope for. But this didn't really feel like Naked Gun.
Naked Gun benefitted a lot from the old tech cinematography, rather than the darker tones of the modern one.

Leslie Nielsen wasn't really known for comedy before Airplane and even after it, he did more serious roles like in Creepshow

Is it supposed to be a serious scene?

Looks awful.

Its a shame, whats happened to comedies. The genre sucks

Horror is currently experiencing a renaissance. Its arguably the golden age of the horror film right now. Comedy? Its been a stale genre for 15 years with no end in sight. I think its because people are afraid to tell jokes now.

Comedy movies are trash

A bit, but not completely. It's a horror movie with five short stories and is based on old horror comics from the 50s. Kinda like Tales from the crypt.
Leslie is playing a real bastard in this, that's why I posted it, but because nowadays he's known for comedy it really doesn't work anymore :D

I think the old Naked Gun/Police Squad played a lot on Leslie Nielsens rep as a serious straight actor. This one is playing on Liam's history of these TAKEN type action films. I'm gonna give Seth credit that he knows the formula and how to apply it. In this case I don't think the trailer is 100% representative of how Liam plays in the whole film.

I mean as an old school guy I thought it was a decent trailer but nothing compares to Leslie Nielson, grew up loving his work and laughing all the way.... I personally think movies are shit especially comedies but if they can actually keep it in like with the style of humor the Naked Guns had it might work. I chuckled so I'm hoping it can land.

looks try hard. Lacks the slap shtick.

The part where he transformed from a school girl, wtf is that "modern" humor?

Yea, was a short trailer tho so we will see.. I don't get modern comedy tho... I still love and watch old stuff like Mr Mom, and the old Air Plane movies, Great Outdoors, Uncle Buck etc... And I just don't get why we can't have old shit like that anymore.

I think modern audience are easily offended, every shows need to sprinkle with postive political commentary now.

I grew up watching mel brooks, monty python, scary movies, naked gun, mr bean, stephen chow shenanigens. great personalities not afraid of funny skits

the joke was probably making fun of the mission impossible movies with the facemask gag every movie

It would probably work better just have Liam dressed up without the metamorphosis CGI.

I can see Frank Drebin would have done so.

This is a movie that doesn't work today because the writters are too afraid to make the actual jokes that made Naked Gun so funny and memorable in the first place...

Outside of the OJ Portrait scene, which made me chuckle,my face was straight for the entire thing...not something you want from a viewer on the trailer of your supposed funny comedy movie.

I also don't like Liam Neeson's delivery compared to the GOAT Leslie Nielsen. They also missed the entire point of his character by making him this sort of cool action hero when in fact Frank was just a moron who got the job done through sheer luck and manipulation of other morons. And yes I get it's his "son" but it's missing the entire point of the character it tries to emulate.

The music also is just...ugghhh.

Like a blind man at an orgy, I was gonna have to feel things out

Will the writing be this strong?
