Yes, yes it's Aliens / not Aliens but...

Nasa is to host a major press conference on a "discovery beyond our solar system".

The event will see the revelation of major information about exoplanets, or planets that orbit stars other than our sun, according to a release. It made no further mention of the details of what would be revealed.

Personally in terms of these announcements, I wish the James Webb telescope was up and active as (and I mean this respectfully) whatever their announcement will be is going to be based heavily on conjecture (probably)

Edit 2: This is what it is, we've never seen one before. No one has.
NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope has revealed the first known system of seven Earth-size planets around a single star. Three of these planets are firmly located in the habitable zone, the area around the parent star where a rocky planet is most likely to have liquid water.

The discovery sets a new record for greatest number of habitable-zone planets found around a single star outside our solar system. All of these seven planets could have liquid water – key to life as we know it – under the right atmospheric conditions, but the chances are highest with the three in the habitable zone.

“This discovery could be a significant piece in the puzzle of finding habitable environments, places that are conducive to life,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator of the agency’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington. “Answering the question ‘are we alone’ is a top science priority and finding so many planets like these for the first time in the habitable zone is a remarkable step forward toward that goal.”

Its earth sized and in the goldielocks zone. But thats all they know for now. Or maybe its aliems. Or maybe 2 planets share the same orbit or something less exciting. I'm going to go with its not going to be very exciting.

The last dying gasp of a once great agency before the Orange Man turns it into dust.

If it wasn't for Papa Putin, I would think that NASA would be right up Trump's alley. Short of outright war, there aren't many other avenues that would allow him the kind of attention and proof of existence that outer space provides.

Earth sized, in the Goldilocks zone, many more planets in this category than originally thought and one 'pretty much certified to have a water detected on it but we can't see shit captain' are indeed likely

I guess if its relatively close and the James Webb will be able to snap direct images of them it could be pretty exciting.

I mean maybe I'm wrong but aren't the stars too darn bright to ever "see" one these? Even with the best telescopes, isn't detecting slight dimming as they pass between the telescope and star the absolute best case scenario?

And so the tip toe journey continues until 'they' think the world is ready to hear about the existence of intelligent alien life.

Right now yes. But apparently one of the awesome things about the James Webb telescope is it will be able to capture direct images of exoplanets. Not sure how detailed they will be tho.

We can see big ones if we blot out the star's light, and we haven't even launched James Webb yet.

Here's the HR 8799 system observed by the Gemini Planet Imager:

There are four identified planets orbiting here, read all about 'em! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HR_8799#Planetary_system

Its probably just more information about planets that could hold life. It's cool to hear about but I wish they can make headway with a telescope on the moon in order to better examine a lot of these exo planets.

Would be amazing if they found earth sized exoplanets, but I don't think we have the ability to really detect them yet do we ?

Ahhh okay. Thanks.

They should stop these conferences. I mean, who is it even for? Youre making the regular folk less and less excited about space every time you do one of these things.

Imagine if they had only held these kinda of conferences for major things. It would be all over the news for days.

"regular folks" would not get excited about anything short of ftl travel or aliens.

I really wish we'd swap the military and NASA budgets. I'd love to see what NASA could accomplish with a 600 billion dollar annual budget.

Fuck. They wouldn't know where to start.

Just take 10bill off of the military and give it to NASA and you'd see special things.

More exo planets no doubt.
I'm far more interested in NASA's spiel once the James Webb telescope launches and is bringing back spectacular new images of deep space.

My mind's telling me - it'll be boring and to the norm on the street it'll mean shit all
My heart's telling me it's irrefutable proof of something groundbreaking

Aliens? Let it be Aliens! :p

Yeah, it's probably gonna be another good candidate for life. A possible target for whenever we might have tech that allows us (or rather a group of humans) to get there.

It's not going to be aliens of course, but I'm increasingly becoming convinced that, if they ever do find aliens, they're better of keeping it secret. Especially if it's intelligent life. I don't think the human race is even close to being ready. We actually took several incredibly large steps backwards in recent years. We couldn't handle it.

Has NASA found a way to launch the GOP and alt right to said Exo planet?

God if only NASA budget was larger. I mean so much of the stuff built for, designed by NASA ends up as consumer products. Biggest example is memory foam.
