Easier to port unix programs to them most likely. NASA does a lot in Unix.

Mac's are not cost efficient though, you would think with their budget being slashed so hardcore and everything they would opt for stuff more cost efficient.

Not made of plastic. They are not way slower in 2 years than when you bought them like PCs. Higher quality build.
