anyone know who else was involved with this project? i know the instrument on Curiosity that will be used to study the atmosphere was built here in Finland, but who else? Australia did something?

They send it commands like "go there" and the onboard computer navigate it's way automatically.

Not really, they used ballast weights and a number of manoeuvres during entry to reduce the landing footprint from several miles to a few hundred feet.
All they can do is wait for orbiting satellites.
They survey the area from photos. Then from satellite images, the engineers from earth program the rover to go exactly where they want. The rover itself can autonomously deviate a little from the plan to avoid rocks and other hazards in the environment. So no, it's not done in real time.

That was the big victory for NASA...the timing of this thing. It certainly pressures both Presidential candidates to pledge their support this morning.
Nasa has always been very inventive from almost catastrophic failures to it's most stunning mission to date

Very carefully. There are no "live" images from Mars. Light lag time is anywhere from three to twenty-two minutes. They program movements based on what the various cameras can see, which is a big part of the reason it has stereoscopic cameras. They have a simulated environment where they test out optimal movements before sending the orders for movement.

Can't be done in real time as it takes about 7 minutes for a signal from Earth to reach Mars.
