NBA 2K6... Impressions by Blackace

if you see me in a fight with a bear, don't help me fool, help the bear!
Well I know the game has been out and people here have talked about it.. but I missed it.. why? because I having been playing NBA 2K6.. First off this games plays pretty darn close to the game it is trying to simulate. Mid range jumpers have a purpose. Players set screens and other players use them! Like most basketball games it is still a bit too easy to just take off and dunk on people, when you shouldn't be able to, but just a bit too east...Also on the down side, the cross over controls are just bad.. they don't work very well (as in they don't do what you want them to do most the times), nor do they free you up to do anything most times.

But aside from a few gripes this game does it all... the tempo is spot on. Teams make their runs like they should and during a franchise no matter how good you think you are doing you can still get ran out the Arena on any given game like real life..

The presentation is top notch.. there are more than a few times I have heard Kenny Smith talk about a player hitting a 3 when I was posting.. but all is forgiven when I see my highlights at halftime..

The Franchise mode seems to be pretty deep with all the scouting and training. Still up in the air about the training everyweek. But the scouting is really nice thus far. Just wanted to put my 2 cents worth in about this masterpiece.. This is the first basketball game in about 10 years that I have been fiending to play.. after 21 games into my season I do not feel it is a chore because games are close most the time and I am enjoying the game.. not just doing , like I have been for the last few years.

Anyways, people playing the franchise mode, how do you affect your chemistry? I mean i have been winning and it goes up slowly.. but at the start of the season I traded a bench PF for a Bench Sg and it dropped it by a lot.. is there a way to tell if a player will affect your chemistry or not?

I don't know much about the chemistry thing because mine hasn't changed yet.

I do know the practices can be a huge help this year. If you practice the right categories, it will seriously help you on your weakpoints in your upcoming matchups. You can boost your post defense in a meaningful way if you're going up against the more bruising teams, and you can boost your passing ratings if you're planning on running the break against the next few teams.

I've noticed significant fluctuations in my team's ratings depending on how much I've practiced.

Oh I totally know how to use it.. Just not sure if I like how much help it can be :lol My Nate Robinson lead Sonics sure like it when he can pass though.. :lol

The game needs a fucking defensive stance button,I do not understand any logic behind leaving it out all these years -_-

DM scored FIFTY SIX points in the paint on me in our league game last night,it's just like almost impossible to guard someone if you try to do it manually, and once they go up for a dunk it's pretty much done as you don't see many contested shots down low this year.I also wish they would swallow their pride and copy EA's Freestyle controls which are simply superior to the Iso Motion they implement every year.

As usual,it's an ok game, but a few key fuckups keep it from being a really good game, this is all from playing other people,I don't bother playing the computer.

I've never needed the defensive stance button yet. All you have to do is stay in front of the guy. It worked on DM for our league game :P.

Are you kidding me? I've been dominating guys with low post defense all week with manual D, and have had no issues either against the CPU or human opponents. You can contest pretty well any shot if A) your timing is correct and B) the defender's skill rating warrants it. NBA 2K6 is light years ahead of what 2K5 offered, and I'm discovering something new with it every time I play.

As I am.. It has been years since I have rushed home to play a hoop game.. rushed home.. no stopping for beers..none of that..right home

Could have just put greatest basketball game ever in your posts. When is operationsports.com coming with a review

The only issue I have is that the CPU AI quirks. When the CPU wants to go into full court press and they have a center on my PG. Defensive AI is certainly the games' shortcoming. I understand switching, but when the DESIGN is that the Center is guarding the point guard, something is not right.

I think one of the 2K6 developers on OS already confirmed this was a logic bug that happens when people are playing out of position (SG as SF, etc). This causes the weird matchups as the computer doesn't pick who should guard who correctly in this situation.

Well,I'm havin different results,I'd say some of it has to do with the Sixers, but eh...

It's like ok I can do ok with sticking with people with Iverson, but once they're past him it's over, which doesn't make sense because the Sixers D was pretty damn good last year in real life.

If I get beat off the dribble at the perimeter on defense, I always switch to my center or pf using the black button immediately so I don't get caught flatfooted down low...if you're using Philly then Dalembert should fill in nicely.

Do you ever switch to a zone? It would cut down on the penetrating and force more midrange shots. Another thing to play with are the defensive pressure settings. If certain players are getting burned in the man to man how about losening up the pressure on the guy they are covering in the settings. Use the double team (settings) on star players who like to penetrate so they get stonewalled once they touch the paint.

Sometimes you have to put a little thought and effort to play good D. ;)

In the Gamespot Review they mentioned that Full Authority mode was taken out. Please tell me if this is true, and if not, please tell me any additions to the mode.

Yeah, Full Authority seems to be removed :|.
I kinda thought it was a good idea if they fixed it up a bit.
Hopefully they'll bring it back next time.

Thanks.....that seems interesting. Too bad they took it out. I never played last year's game offline so I missed it.

My only real beef with the game is that there's only one reverse dunk animation and that dunk has like a 50% success rate. It's absolutely retarded. I've missed the dunk in practice mode on a wide open drive. The alternate animation for a reverse (down on the right analog) is this stupid-looking layup where the guy looks like he's about to go for a two-handed reverse jam, but lets go of the ball before getting there. It's the dumbest thing I've seen. Of course, this can be remedied by not using that particular move, but it takes away from your offensive options.

Hmm.. I have never had that happen.. and I have my PG (B.Davis) playing SG now..

The crossover controls take a lot of practice to nail down. It's more of a button combination system than just tap a button and go.

Overall, this game is worlds better than Live, it's not even a contest. You complain about the ease of dunks, the fucking defenders don't even rotate in Live. :( It's like a free dunk everytime on a fast break.

Well I haven't played Live, but just because Live sucks doesn't make this game's shortcomings any easier to swallow...

How exactly do you do an up and under in this game? I had the ability to do it for about ...20 minutes then all of a sudden all my up and under attempts becomes a headfake in one direction into a quick turn around jumper in the other.

From what I understand it's post up (hold L), then flick the shot stick in the direction you want to up and under(?)

It worked briefly, but now all I'm getting is that fake into a turn around jumper......I was even able to up and under with Iverson at one point and now I can't get anyone to do it at all.

Nevermind, I found out what I was doing wrong (had to hold up on the left analog).

Good to see they massively nerfed the up and under though, the old 2k5 up and under was an almost guaranteed basket in most cases :lol

Admittedly, I've always been a fan of the NBA Live series, even during the 2K series' better years. Also, until last night, I was of the opinion that NBA 2K2 was the last decent 2K basketball game; 2K3 and beyond completely sucked ass. The players seemed stiff and unresponsive, and Isomotion felt like a clumsy, retarded version of Freestyle.

However, I finally got play to 2K6 on the XBOX last night. I was very, very impressed. In fact, if I hadn't known any better, I would have assumed it was an evolved iteration of NBA Live. The controls were tight, the animation was superb, and everything felt balanced and just seemed to flow.

Live 2004* was my basketball game of choice by default. No longer. 2K6 easily shits all over it. I'm a convert. 2K6 has won me over.

*Live 2005 was a like a small step backwards in the series (I don't care about the dunk contest and the animation/gameplay didn't seem as smooth), and I haven't played 2006 as of yet, but from what I've seen and read and heard from friends who own the game, the series hasn't changed much.

That's how I felt about it too. After Live 2004 I was thinking that the franchise was on the right path toward being a solid sim and was just a year away from being really great, but the 2005 killed that feeling. From what I've played of 2006 it looks like it has the same problems. I just hope that they patch the gameplay up in the 360 version, but from the videos I've seen I'm not holding my breath.

F you and your avatar. That asshole should have been flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct.

they've made big strides this year, and it definately plays a hell of a lot better than Live 06, which i made the mistake of getting (it actually somehow got worse than Live 05, which wasn't TOO bad). but they have (the 2k team) a long way to go imo. i still think Inside Drive 05 is the best playing b-ball game out there. and yes, i know 2k have some of the old ID developers, which is probably why they made those strides... but they have a ways to go still. i'm hoping the x360 versions can improve a lot on what they have now... if not, it'll probably be the 2007 versions till they get where i want them to be.

to be honest, right now, i'm just not happy with where all the b-ball games are in terms of gameplay. but if i had to pick the best playing _new_ game, it's an easy choice: 2k6 (avoid Live 06 like the PLAGUE! it fucking sucks donkey cocks). although i hold out a glimmer of hope for the beautiful Live 06 on x360 (which has no graphical equal imo). granted, it's a very, VERY small hope, considering they still have the crap ice skating player movements and too many long forcefull animations that intercede with the players ability to control.
