An Alamance County Southern rights organization is being accused of being a “hate group.”

The Southern Poverty Law Center this week put ACTBAC NC on its online “hate map” after its annual review of activity meeting its criteria.

ACTBAC, which formed in Alamance County surrounding an effort in summer 2015 to ensure that the Confederate Monument in Graham would not be removed, is classified on the Montgomery-based nonprofit's map as a “neo-Confederate” group.

“To me, it’s basically blasphemy,” ACTBAC founder Gary Williamson said. “There’s no reason whatsoever we should even be on there. We have no reason to be on there. There is nothing we’ve ever done that expresses racism or hate.”

According to Ryan Lenz, editor of the SPLC’s Hatewatch blog and senior writer for the organization’s Intelligence Report, the SPLC scours social media posts, media reports and “movement literature” throughout the year to identify potential hate groups.

Commissioner Tim Sutton, who posted on ACTBAC’s Facebook page in March 2016 asking someone from the group to contact him regarding his bid to rejoin the Board of Commissioners, told the Times-News on Thursday, as he did in December, that he had no affiliation with the group.

“I don’t know the group,” Sutton said. “I don’t know the people in the group. I’ve never attended a single meeting, but I’ve never seen them do anything that I would create an analysis of them as being a hate group.

“Some people want to put a bad label on people who support that kind of heritage or remembering its place in history.”

Sutton said he did not “have a lot of respect for the Southern Poverty Law Center.”

He also criticized the Times-News’ coverage of ACTBAC, told the reporter never to contact him again, and said the hamburger he was eating was of more importance than she.

Stay classy, Alamance County.

I lived there for over a decade in the 90s and early 2000s, and this type of sentiment does not surprise me. But, there is still a lot of greatness there, and genuinely good people that do not support this kind of bullshit.

The commissioner's response is especially sickening, and he was just reelected in November.

I love the typo:
I would like to thank you for joining our page and support for our cause.. In the past few years, months, weeks, and most importantly DAYS , our rights as Americans have been taking away and and most Importantly to me OUR SOUTHERN RIGHTS!! This is not just to support our precious Confederate Flag but to support our rights as American Citizens and at any point and time our Religion, our morals, our Heritage, our well being as a Country is takin away we need to stand up and at some point take matters into our own hands!! There are a few that are willing and wanting and i hope we can grow to make it possible that if we cant change the world atleast we can protect our small piece of ground we call home!! Alamance County!! Maybe if we start to take small issues into our own hands as the people we can have others follow and make a solid stand...
Seems like a classy, upstanding group.

As for the comments from the commissioner, if you,or anyone you know lives in that area of NC, you can contact him to know your displeasure. I have already asked my family that still lives there to do so.

It seems he is pissing off the local press. I don't see that going well for him.

Poor babies. Won't someone respect their proud heritage...

99% percent of America's problems come from the fact we pretend that the Confederacy's sole purpose wasn't to litteraly destroy the United States just so they could continue to own black people as their property.

The Confederacy never died.

Not sure how you can be pro-Confederate but also want a place in the USA.

Not sure how you can be pro-1700's Southern heritage but also claim to not hate certain groups.

But okay.

Still can't believe how much of this country is just cool with people displaying Confederate flags and Confederate pride.
