All seems really shady, but I doubt anything will come of it.
They had 90% of a championship team getting degrees from a bogus department, this kind of minor thing isn't going to stop the UNC train!Yeah, probably not.

UNC seems to be able to slide through it all, though. It helps that basketball is much lower profile than football (since everyone only pays attention to bball for one month).I think this is kind of like the TOSU Tatoo scandal where the NCAA really wanted to ignore it but it got to a point it could not. After the whole Marvin Austin thing, I'm surprised the pwers that be at UNC are fucking around with this at all.
Of course if this was UNC-Charlotte, they'd get the death penalty if someone bought their players a pizza.
I imagine they will as the evidence begins to build. Suspend him for the fall semester if you need to, reinstate him in time for conference season, and cue the "he's really matured, learned his lesson" puff pieces for when the tourney rolls around.I don't expect NCAA to come in much, but I'm surprised UNC hasn't suspended PJ at all. You hear a decent amount about players "violating team conduct" or team rules every year. Surely all this counts as team conduct.
i can't believe PJ has become this much of a headache. gotta play this one carefully...
Totally agreed. I don't mean to single out PJ either, I'm just surprised at all the bad news that keeps coming out and that UNC/Roy still haven't said much of anything on it.I have a real hard time wagging the finger at impermissible benefits because I think it happens at EVERY school and the whole notion of the student athlete is obviously a sham. That said, when the heat is on, dial it back a bit. After the football issue, you'd think they would be more vigilant.
Johnson is the lone 2014 small forward with a Kentucky offer and he told the Courier-Journal at the LeBron James Skills Academy in Las Vegas he was honored to be in that position.
“That means to me they really want me and what they’re saying if valid,” he said. “Coach [John] Calipari is one of the most honest coaches I’ve talked to so far, and he’s shown it. That’s big for me. A lot of coaches say it, but they don’t show it. Having me being the only small forward Kentucky has offered is a big deal.
Johnson said he expects several other top players at Big Blue Madness, with 2014 point guard Emmanuel Mudiay already saying he will come.
“A lot of guys are going,” Johnson told the Courier-Jouranl. “I heard me and Emmanuel Mudiay, and (Alabama shooting guard) Devin Booker just told me this weekend he wants to come with me, so it’s going to be packed. I’m excited because I want to see them at their best. I think that’s the best weekend for basketball up there and to see the school also. I’m excited to go up there and see the campus life when basketball is going to be big.”

I appreciate you at least not sounding like 99% of the people at PackPride and TDD

Uh, so is UNC fucked or what? You can't make this shit up. Granted, this is all circumstantial, but come on, who spends $15,000 on rental cars in the town they live in? It's pretty clear this guy is a middle man getting paid by some booster to rent cars for UNC student athletes.
Not really. Like truly said, impermissible benefits is so prevalent in major college athletics that it's really not that big a deal anymore. The NCAA wants to keep up the sham of amateurism in college athletics (I.E. the "student athlete"), but they're not going to clamp down on this kind of thing anytime soon, not while they're still making bank off of these programs.
From what we've heard so far, I wouldn't expect much in terms of NCAA discipline. THE CAROLINA WAY takes a PR hit, but other than that, they're good (as of now).
PJ, on the other hand, smh.
Chapel Hill University of North Carolina Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham has issued the following statement:
The athletic department compliance staff and I are fully aware of recent media accounts related to our mens basketball team. We take these matters very seriously and are looking into these reports and the inferences they contain with all due diligence. It is my practice not to comment on the individuals involved or the details surrounding these reports until we have sufficient understanding of the facts involved. We are still gathering information, learning information from other sources, and we will not comment until we have a strong grasp of each individual situation. Where the facts show mistakes in judgment and/or actions, Coach (Roy) Williams will take and I will support the appropriate disciplinary measures.
"The integrity of the University of North Carolina is of paramount concern to all of us and is the principle on which Coach Williams and the athletic department operate each and every day. The most responsible course of action, however, is to withhold judgment and comment until we are confident we have the facts to do so. I appreciate everyones understanding of that and we will bring these matters to resolution as soon as possible.
Lmfao!
Devin Booker confirmed he's coming to Big Blue Madness with Stanley Johnson and Emmanuel Muiday. Woo! Mudiay says he's cutting down his list to five at the end of the month and that will be his final list for his decision and where he'll take his five official visits to. He has an official visit scheduled for Big Blue Madness so I'm assuming UK will be in his top 5.
The NCAA has deemed two former players at Prime Prep, the school co-founded by ex-NFL star Deion Sanders, as non-qualifiers, multiple sources told ESPN.com.
Both Jordan Mickey, a consensus Top 50 player who is a freshman at LSU, and TCU freshman Karviar Shepherd (No. 77 in the ESPN100) were recently informed by the NCAA that they would not be eligible to play this season due to academic issues at Prime Prep.
Yes, Trey Lyles did say the following: "Kentucky gets players to the league faster, but Louisville might develop them a little bit better."
A detailed police report into the traffic stop and arrest of UNC basketball star P.J. Hairston says that he switched places with a passenger to try to avoid a citation of driving without a license, admitted to being a recreational marijuana user and had been given the rental car that he was driving to go to Atlanta and see friends.
The new details raise more questions about Hairstons standing with the basketball program, which is currently reviewing the situation. The details also counter claims by the Durham man who had rented the car, Haydn Fats Thomas, who had told reporters he did not give the 2013 GMC Yukon to Hairston but to another man in the car.
ITT unc fans being delusional
i'll be shocked if he gets more than a handful of games..
Or understanding how the NCAA deals with things. Sure, something may come for PJ, but considering everything was under his prerogative with (as of now) no implication of the university, nothing will happen to UNC.
No one has any idea how then NCAA deals with anything. The only consistent thing is their inconsistency in rulings. Not saying they're going to destroy unc, but to think pj is going to just get 5 games seems delusional.
UNC is a blue blood and one of the highest earning programs in the NCAA and is the ACC's lapdog (I go there and I'm not ashamed to admit it lol). Like others have said they'll get a slap on the wrist because it'd be a huge blow to the ACC and especially companies like Raycom if UNC is not competitive this year.
