NCAA Men's College Basketball 2012-2013 Season |OT|

I got grudge sucked!
They had 90% of a championship team getting degrees from a bogus department, this kind of minor thing isn't going to stop the UNC train!

I think this is kind of like the TOSU Tatoo scandal where the NCAA really wanted to ignore it but it got to a point it could not. After the whole Marvin Austin thing, I'm surprised the pwers that be at UNC are fucking around with this at all.

Of course if this was UNC-Charlotte, they'd get the death penalty if someone bought their players a pizza.

UNC seems to be able to slide through it all, though. It helps that basketball is much lower profile than football (since everyone only pays attention to bball for one month).

UNC-Charlotte? Clemson or Virginia would be effed. UNC will skate.

I don't expect NCAA to come in much, but I'm surprised UNC hasn't suspended PJ at all. You hear a decent amount about players "violating team conduct" or team rules every year. Surely all this counts as team conduct.

I imagine they will as the evidence begins to build. Suspend him for the fall semester if you need to, reinstate him in time for conference season, and cue the "he's really matured, learned his lesson" puff pieces for when the tourney rolls around.

i can't believe PJ has become this much of a headache. gotta play this one carefully...

He's been photographed around Wilmington drinking beer (under age) and driving another high priced rental car. Dude, WTF are you doing? Even if PJ is completely innocent, or it ends up being a minor violation and he has to sit a few games, cut that shit out. People on all sides are watching you.

I have a real hard time wagging the finger at impermissible benefits because I think it happens at EVERY school and the whole notion of the student athlete is obviously a sham. That said, when the heat is on, dial it back a bit. After the football issue, you'd think they would be more vigilant.

Totally agreed. I don't mean to single out PJ either, I'm just surprised at all the bad news that keeps coming out and that UNC/Roy still haven't said much of anything on it.

Stanley Johnson says that Devin Booker will probably visit Big Blue Madness with him and Emmanuel Mudiay.

Johnson is the lone 2014 small forward with a Kentucky offer and he told the Courier-Journal at the LeBron James Skills Academy in Las Vegas he was honored to be in that position.

“That means to me they really want me and what they’re saying if valid,” he said. “Coach [John] Calipari is one of the most honest coaches I’ve talked to so far, and he’s shown it. That’s big for me. A lot of coaches say it, but they don’t show it. Having me being the only small forward Kentucky has offered is a big deal.

Johnson said he expects several other top players at Big Blue Madness, with 2014 point guard Emmanuel Mudiay already saying he will come.

“A lot of guys are going,” Johnson told the Courier-Jouranl. “I heard me and Emmanuel Mudiay, and (Alabama shooting guard) Devin Booker just told me this weekend he wants to come with me, so it’s going to be packed. I’m excited because I want to see them at their best. I think that’s the best weekend for basketball up there and to see the school also. I’m excited to go up there and see the campus life when basketball is going to be big.”

Man, I would love for Calipari to get two out of those three guys. Going to be tough with Johnson and Booker since they have schools closer to home going hard after them, but I think we have a good shot at Mudiay.

I think we lose Booker to either UK or MSU. His chances of starting day 1 at those schools will probably be better than his chances at Michigan.

He's good but it's gonna be tough to start over a Jr Stauskas or a Soph Irvin.

UK's entire roster will probably go pro and Booker would be able to step right into the Gary Harris slot at MSU.

I appreciate you at least not sounding like 99% of the people at PackPride and TDD

Yeah, seriously.

How the fuck do you think these kids are driving around in Escalades with tinted windows as freshmen? It's part of the game.

PJ has the chance to make a living in the NBA and he seems on the verge of throwing that away on some really stupid shit. Not really something to celebrate

besides, we're going to destroy you with or without him on the roster ;P

Uh, so is UNC fucked or what? You can't make this shit up. Granted, this is all circumstantial, but come on, who spends $15,000 on rental cars in the town they live in? It's pretty clear this guy is a middle man getting paid by some booster to rent cars for UNC student athletes.

Not really. Like truly said, impermissible benefits is so prevalent in major college athletics that it's really not that big a deal anymore. The NCAA wants to keep up the sham of amateurism in college athletics (I.E. the "student athlete"), but they're not going to clamp down on this kind of thing anytime soon, not while they're still making bank off of these programs.

From what we've heard so far, I wouldn't expect much in terms of NCAA discipline. THE CAROLINA WAY takes a PR hit, but other than that, they're good (as of now).

PJ, on the other hand, smh.

Impermissible benefits are only 'not a big deal' when it's one of the NCAA's preferred schools. Anyone else gets punished for players getting a free slice of pizza or washing their car with a hose hooked up to a school building.

I think everyone is in agreement that most of the amateurism bullshit in the NCAA rulebook is outdated and irrelevant, but they ARE rules, and they are still regularly being enforced against smaller schools. It is ridiculous for a regulatory body to display such obvious favoritism towards certain schools, and that is what it going to kill the NCAA. After 3+ years on constant scandals at UNC, the next time the NCAA punishes a school there will be huge legitimate complaints about double standards. It was already happening with the Miami situation, and it will only get worse.

I don't think much will happen to UNC in general, but PJ specifically? Like I said earlier, I'm surprised UNC/Roy hasn't come out and spoken about some sort of discipline. Story seems to get worse every week.

Also, seeing reports at a few places that Chris Walker is still not eligible for Florida and could lose the entire year. Really hoping he pulls through, the SEC is going to blow next year if Florida is not as strong as possible.

I'm a little surprised that the requirement is only 2.0 as a GPA, though. That seems low...I remember fucking around a lot my senior year and still managing to scrape together like a 2.8. Though I guess every person is in a different place when it comes to learning and school so I shouldn't judge.

Chapel Hill – University of North Carolina Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham has issued the following statement:

“The athletic department compliance staff and I are fully aware of recent media accounts related to our men’s basketball team. We take these matters very seriously and are looking into these reports and the inferences they contain with all due diligence. It is my practice not to comment on the individuals involved or the details surrounding these reports until we have sufficient understanding of the facts involved. We are still gathering information, learning information from other sources, and we will not comment until we have a strong grasp of each individual situation. Where the facts show mistakes in judgment and/or actions, Coach (Roy) Williams will take and I will support the appropriate disciplinary measures.

"The integrity of the University of North Carolina is of paramount concern to all of us and is the principle on which Coach Williams and the athletic department operate each and every day. The most responsible course of action, however, is to withhold judgment and comment until we are confident we have the facts to do so. I appreciate everyone’s understanding of that and we will bring these matters to resolution as soon as possible.”

Devin Booker confirmed he's coming to Big Blue Madness with Stanley Johnson and Emmanuel Muiday. Woo! Mudiay says he's cutting down his list to five at the end of the month and that will be his final list for his decision and where he'll take his five official visits to. He has an official visit scheduled for Big Blue Madness so I'm assuming UK will be in his top 5.

Yeah, I don't think we'll have the #1 class, but we could be top 3-4 again.

We have Towns, I think we'll get Mudiay, and I think we'll get a wing player. Booker, Vaughn, Stanley Johnson, maybe even Josh Perkins. We also just offered top 20 small forward Kelly Oubre. So that's three top 20 players. Maybe 4 if we get two perimeter commitments.

Another big man is what I'm not sure about. Right now our two big targets are Trey Lyles and Cliff Alexander. Louisville is right there for Lyles because of his buddy from AAU going there and I've read MSU is right there with UK, if not ahead of them for Alexander.

There's also Myles Turner who is in the top 10, but he just recently shot up in the rankings and has like a million schools on his list so no clue if UK is a favourite there.

Edit: actually, UK is apparently still "evaluating" Myles Turner and haven't made an offer yet. But we did make it through his first cut. From 60 schools down to... 26 :lol

Michigan really starts having a Midnight Madness. Not saying Booker would have chosen Michigan over Kentucky( I doubt it actually) but you at least have to give them the option and make them choose.

But Beilein thinks its waste of good practice time. I think he's wrong. Last time they tried it was pretty lame but I think after another good season the fanbase might finally be in a place to really support one.

ruh oh:

The NCAA has deemed two former players at Prime Prep, the school co-founded by ex-NFL star Deion Sanders, as non-qualifiers, multiple sources told ESPN.com.

Both Jordan Mickey, a consensus Top 50 player who is a freshman at LSU, and TCU freshman Karviar Shepherd (No. 77 in the ESPN100) were recently informed by the NCAA that they would not be eligible to play this season due to academic issues at Prime Prep.

http://espn.go.com/college-sports/r.../two-ex-prime-prep-players-ineligible-sources

Prime Prep has some pretty highly ranked players right now, including Emmanuel Mudiay in the Class of 2014 and Elijah Thomas in the Class of 2015.

Trey Lyles has his final four in place: Florida, Butler, Kentucky and Louisville.

Great news. But then Jeff Goodman from CBS tweeted this earlier. I guess from an interview at the Peach Jam.

Yes, Trey Lyles did say the following: "Kentucky gets players to the league faster, but Louisville might develop them a little bit better."

That, plus his AAU buddy already being committed to Louisville, makes me think Pitino might get this one =[

Let's just hope we can nab Myles Turner or Cliff Alexander if that's the case.

http://www.newsobserver.com/2013/07/12/3025921/police-report-uncs-hairston-switched.html#storylink=cpy

A detailed police report into the traffic stop and arrest of UNC basketball star P.J. Hairston says that he switched places with a passenger to try to avoid a citation of driving without a license, admitted to being a “recreational” marijuana user and had been given the rental car that he was driving to go to Atlanta and see friends.

The new details raise more questions about Hairston’s standing with the basketball program, which is currently reviewing the situation. The details also counter claims by the Durham man who had rented the car, Haydn “Fats” Thomas, who had told reporters he did not give the 2013 GMC Yukon to Hairston but to another man in the car.

I think this is it for Hairston. No way UNC can avoid punishing him now.

i'll be shocked if he gets more than a handful of games..

This. Not getting the gun charge was HUGE.

Ninjas get caught with pot everyday b. Roy will suspend him for the first five games or so for being a dumbass (the irrelevant part of the schedule where UNC is beating up on cupcakes anyway), and the NCAA will give Carolina a slap on the wrist.

Or understanding how the NCAA deals with things. Sure, something may come for PJ, but considering everything was under his prerogative with (as of now) no implication of the university, nothing will happen to UNC.

No one has any idea how then NCAA deals with anything. The only consistent thing is their inconsistency in rulings. Not saying they're going to destroy unc, but to think pj is going to just get 5 games seems delusional.

UNC is a blue blood and one of the highest earning programs in the NCAA and is the ACC's lapdog (I go there and I'm not ashamed to admit it lol). Like others have said they'll get a slap on the wrist because it'd be a huge blow to the ACC and especially companies like Raycom if UNC is not competitive this year.

ACC; Big Ten conf commissioner and ESPN CEO all are UNC grads.

I think Hairston is proper fucked. At this point he's just committed too much dumb to risk keeping around. By his own admission he's a pothead, a liar, and probably a felon. The NCAA will likely do nothing to UNC itself though.

we heavy.

Sports is a good old boys club, don't think for a second these are the only three NC alum with policy deciding power. Getting Delany as the Big 10 conf commissioner, along with Skipper shows how strong the NC social networking is along the sporting elite. Kid is screwed, but UNC's safe.
