Need Covid-related advice from normal folk...that's you, I think.

A friend of mine has tested positive for Covid. She's fine, no symptoms right now, but I was over her and her husband's place less than a week ago. He's negative, and she didn't hang out for more than an hour or two, but still...Now, with Christmas coming up, despite our state urging everyone to forget about Christmas, I was going to spend it with my family. The group includes three sets of older folk who are all over 70 (including my parents), and my nieces and nephews, so naturally I'm a bit concerned.

I don't have any symptoms, but I'm going to see about getting a test tomorrow and hope to get results before Christmas Eve. Even then, I don't know how any of this truly works, so I'm not even sure I should bother with what are bound to be ridiculous wait times, as even a negative test would still have me feeling irresponsible strolling into someone's home less than two weeks after a known possible exposure.

All that said, what would GAF do?

if you’ve made up your mind that you are going to go, get tested

wait times aren’t that bad

as for results, the rapid tests I took gave me results in 20 mins, PCR tests took 2 days

Definitely get tested. An employee of mine got tested before visiting at risk family over Thanksgiving - ended up testing positive. Completely asymptomatic too. Ended up canceling his trip but he was glad he didn’t expose his family.

If you’re worried about a false negative the swab up the nose test supposedly is very accurate, but I think it’s a couple days before you get the result back.

You dont want to forever be known as the guy who killed grandma, grandpa, and aunt agnus.

get tested. Wear a mask if you go, sounds silly but safest option

An hour or two is more than enough time to transmit the infection to someone else (the number is like 15 minutes). The tests are pretty bogus, in that all they tell you is whether or not you have COVID viruses in your nose (IOW, it doesn't tell you you actually have a clinical infection, or are contagious), but considering you are planning to hang out with old people, that's worth knowing.

I just wouldn’t go.

For all the corona hysteria, one thing is generally accepted among everyone — very old/enfeebled people and this do not mix. They are by far the most likely to suffer devastating or deadly consequences.

I mean, they could be fine. You might not even have it? But why play games like that?

At the least, tell them and see what they think. They should be able to think over whether that’s a risk they want to take.

Yeah I'd just stay home.

I'm sure if you relayed this story to the elderly people there they probably wouldn't want you there either.

I wish you luck.
I have been sicker than I have ever been in my life for the past few weeks. My roomies think it is covid but I am trying to tough it out. I can't drive myself to get tests because I am waiting on my registration sticker to come still.
I would start to get better on my days off but then would try working (because I was out of sick time and my job does a points thing when you miss time) and by half way through my shift I am literally coughing so much that I can't see straight while dealing with clients over the phone. I got frustrated and ended up taking time off anyway because I could not continue so now I have that over my head. As my supervisor put it "If you have any paperwork or hospital papers it would be in your best interest to send them over" (which I don't because i have gone nowhere, experts even tell you to not go to hospitals if you are sick)
So I missed four days in three weeks, which will make bills rather intriguing.

Chill and stay home, but take care of yourself. Rest and hydrate and all of that because it is a nightmare.
If you even think you may have it treat it like you do and be safe.

A positive test result doesn't tell you if you're infectious or not (Youtube vid explaining it) so it won't exactly give you the answer you're seeking. Asymptomatic spread is very rare, too.

There's been a lot more brainwashing than hand washing this year, but if you're all aware of the risks and okay with it then there shouldn't be any problem.

Everyone dies, but not everyone lives.

Grandmother is 80 and had a stroke yesterday, grandfather is 88.
Fuck no I'm not traveling by train for four hours to spend a few evenings of light entertainment and risking infecting them. We'll do it later and therefore make sure everybody has another christmas.

My brother works in a care home for the elderly, everybody is infected apart from him, he is barely holding it together. They are supposed to not let anybody in but the feeble minded staff won't enforce shutting out family members, who are stupid on a whole other level to attempt it while out and about in public for the rest of their time. I feel sympathy only for my brother and the old people that are not too hot on dying.
Local hospital has 47 infected staff and closed down.

Imagine killing family members to have some good grub, a few whiskys and a cigar.

I would not go, getting test is on you yourself, I would like to say "get tested", I have been forced to do that 5 times already (thanks to hospital visit, where someone is always infected) and it's straight up horrible experience. Would get again liver transplant then get tested. I am not hero when it comes to this. So your call

Should of tested as soon as you found out and then a few days after to really be sure if you really wanted to go , I would have taken every precaution , and still then might not even go ,this thing is no joke when it comes to the elderly.

Did you tell your family that you may have it? The answer seems simple enough. If it's negative and they say it's fine then it's fine. If they are worried even after the results are negative then don't go. You also need to take into account that one result may not be conclusive as there were plenty of reports of false negatives.

Sounds like a good excuse to stay home and play video games and not be bored to death by your family - youre doing it for them!

win/win

Get tested. You should have the results before Christmas Eve. I went to take a test without an appointment and I was done in a few minutes. Got my results the next day.

If it helps - my wife and I made the decision to just buy the food early, put it in the freezer, and simply not meet up with family at all this year. It's actually going to go alright. The rest of my family is all doing the same thing. Meet up half-way between, exchange gifts, take them home to individual families but no gatherings. We're in Mexico and we saw numbers jump up in our city before the end of November alone. I would postpone any holiday gathers this year. This virus sucks and you don't want it and you don't want to give it to family either. Enjoy the holidays but safely.

Believe you me, I would be OK with staying home, just delaying it and doing a belated Christmas thing on New Year's with the fam, but I spoke to everyone and they're not having it. We lost grandma to Covid due to Cuomo's nursing home fiasco, but still, everyone is carrying on with their lives using the proper precautions. I didn't bother telling my mom (yet), since I don't want to scare her, and she would burst into hysterics at the mere thought that I would sit this one out.

I'll be going to a testing center tomorrow for a regular test - if it's a madhouse, which is entirely a possibility being that I'm in NYC, I'm going to go to an urgent care center on Monday that does rapid testing. They told me on the phone that there aren't long lines for that, and the process is quick.

If the test is negative, I'm leaning towards joining the festivities, and just wearing a mask most of the time and keeping my distance.
