Need help building my own 106" Projector Screen

I want to build my own fixed, 106" projector screen (non-pull down). It can be as simple as just a white board with a black boarder; I just want to know what would be the best type of paint I could buy at a local Lowe's and what I could do to make a nice, professional looking black boarder. Any advice is welcome!

Goo Systems

Check it out. A company specializing in painted screens. Tons of options. Personally, I'd nix the border and just leave it clean.

look on ebay, theres a special paint that they sell that increases the gain almost as much as a "screen". im pretty sure you have to do multiple coats with different shades

Check out avsforum.com. There are several people on the forum who have done an amazing job of testing different combinations of materials and paints to generate excellent picture surfaces. It was some time ago so hopefully the comparison shots are still around, since it was a great resource to DIYers. Be careful tinkering though, it's easy to spend more then what a quality screen would cost especially if you go through several revisions, chasing the "perfect screen" coating. Personally I feel that the Goo solutions are overpriced and went with a 100" Da-lite Hi-power retroreflective screen (reflects light back to the source similar to a stopsign)

Leguna, go HERE for all of the suggestions you could ever want and then some. A lot of your choice should depend upon the type of PJ you have. Goo Systems is good stuff, but they're may be more affordable choices for you out there.

Although I beat you to the punch, you supplied the superior link. Kudos to you my good man. :D

I'd reccomend Goo Systems paint, and to spray it on.

It was a royal pain it the ass to roll that paint on, If I did it again i'd find/rent a spray unit.

:lol :D $99 ebay item for $15 worth of blackout cloth, a felt/vinyl border and NO FRAME.

you obviously are a FP newbie but you need to do some reading @ AVS diy screen forum and then consider DIY painting/masking/framing. black matte tape will do the trick. i'd advise you start with a painted wall and masked border.

ps - you REALLY WANT the border for good contrast.

I buillt my own. It was very easy and relatively cheap. I found some instructions at the AVS Forums or somewhere that I loosely followed, and it worked out great.

All I did was bought some pine boards, 4" wide (I wanted a thick border, though on a screen this large screen it doesnt look big at all) and 1" deep. I attached all 4 sides together using "L" Brackets and 3/4" screws. Then I bought some black velvet material and wraped the wood in that, using a staple gun to secure it.

For the screen material I used the "Blackout Material" that all these DIY'ers always talk about. It is the way to go; and they really will know what you're talking about when you ask for it at the cloth store. I attached that with staples as well, and I was done! Like I said, easy as pie.

I guess the only difficulty I had was in getting the screen material to strech smooth across the whole thing, but with a couple adjustments it was fine.

I do freelance at the DC Convention Center.

Spent hours erecting huge ass Da-Lite screens. Screens of all sorts/sizes are everywhere.

I've been tempted to stuff a screen (while folded) into my coat, but the tension needed to flatten it out would make wall mounting a nightmare.

That's basically what one of my buddies did for his Panny AE700. He ordered the screen material off of Ebay for a pittance, built the frame and border. He wasn't real pleased with the image quality so he mixed up one of the home-brew screen paints from AVS and painted the fabric a real light color neutral gray.

Black level could be better, but overall, it looks fantastic for the money. The image quality and the screen itself look ace.
