Lately I've been wanting to play one of those game where you get the overhead view of the fighter jet/space ship and the screen scrolls up with the level, and you have the ability to move all over the screen. You can also upgrade your weapons from machine guns to missiles and suck. The one's I've seen in the past were pretty much 2D and just last night I saw an import game of this genre on a friends dreamcast.

Hopefully some of you know what I'm talking about.

Do they make games like these anymore for the modern consoles?

Are you talking about vertical shmups? Like Ikaruga or something? You upgrade your weapons, tons of enemies, very hard, etc.?

They make very few...you definitely want a dreamcast. There are some that are horizontal too, in which case the PS2 has a few (in the US, more in Japan). There are also vertical titles on it too.

I still have my dreamcast but it's not modded. Did they make games like this that were released in the US on the DC?

Yes. Mars Matrix, Bangai-O, Giga Wing 1+2, etc. many more.

There are also a few on PS2 (Gradius, Mobile Light Force 2, R-Type Final) as well as Ikaruga on GC.

Check a game listing site for Dreamcast though, there's several more I'm forgetting. Also, some of the best recent ones came out in Japan on Dreamcast. You don't need to mod your system, you can just create a boot disc. If you do a little research at Dreamcast emulation sites, you can figure that part out.
