So how hard is it to replace the square gate with an octogonal gate in the standard SFIV FightStick?

Do arcade cabinets traditionally use square gates or octogonal?

I guess I just want to use whatever the standard is going to be, and I don't ever remember using square gates in the past, but perhaps that was because I wasn't paying attention :lol

The arcades use square gates whenever Japanese style sticks are used. American style sticks don't have gates, but if you're used to American style sticks then you can swap in the octagonal gate, which might give you a more familiar feel.

Hey guys. My FS Ex2 just fell onto my wooden floor and the RT button stopped to work. Is there any way to find out if the button is the defective part or the pcb ? I want to grab the chance to mod the stick with new buttons and preferably a new Stick now. Any recommondations on parts which aren t a bitch to get into an Ex2 ?

the only parts that aren't a bitch to get into the ex2 are the parts that come with it lol.

Oh ok Thanks. So if I wanted to modify my buttons and the color of the joystick ball on my hrap3, all i would have to order from lizardlick.com would be:

1. 8 sanwa obsf-30 buttons
2. 2 sanwa obsf-24 buttons
3. 1 sanwa LB-35 joystick ball

That's it, right? no adaptors or anything?

Does anyone have any experience with the Retrokits at Retrozone?

I have about six old Saturn controllers, including a pair of Virtua Sticks that I'm considering transforming to USB (but I'll probably solder to death).

Anyhow, I've read people having some start-button issues on PS3 with some of the older USB converters out there (where you plug the controller into them), so I was hoping someone might have some experience with these kits before I spend nearly $60 on a pair.

Tough call if I had to go one way or the other. If I swapped the stock Hori buttons on an HRAP for Sanwa to get comparable performance to the TE, the TE would still have more features and cord storage.

Aesthetically, I like HRAPs a little more than the FSTE, even if the design is getting a bit stale. It's cheaper too, so if I had to go one way, it'd be HRAP. As you mentioned; best experience for the price.

I heard a rumor that the buttons in the Hori EX are welded in. Any validity to that, and if so is it easy to mod around in order to swap in better buttons?

It depends on what you mean by "Hori EX"

Hori Real Arcade Pro EX (HRAP EX) uses quick disconnects and is easy as pie to swap buttons.
Hori Fighting Stick EX2 has the Hori buttons soldered directly to the circuit board and is much more difficult to mod.

That's right. If I were you I'd get 2 30mm hole plugs as well. No need to get Sanwa plugs though, I just got a bunch of the Yenox branded ones because they're cheaper.

Also worth pointing out that you could go with any 30mm or 24mm Seimitsu buttons, and the Seimitsu balltops will fit on Sanwa joysticks, just in case you wanted a bubble ball or something.

No need for any adapters with any of that.

So is it true that the wireless ps3 madcatz pad is only rechargeable by batteries and not the usual usb cord like the ps3 controller?

Is this going to be easy to modify?

Thanks _dementia, I was referring to the HRAP EX and your answer is exactly what I wanted to read.

I'm swapping out the buttons on my FSSE when I get mine. I have the screw ins instead of snap ins. Did I order the wrong type or will it work? Is one better than the other?

Thanks.

Not sure how many people have actually tried putting Sanwa screwins in the standard SF4 stick, but it might be a tight fit. You should be able to get them in, if worst comes to worst you might have to file down the outsides a little.

Hori SFIV sticks:

PS3
360

Is it wrong that I want the PS3 one just because of the box? :lol

Just finished playing a few games of HD Remix with my new Madcatz TEs (see SF4 thread for pics!) and I can confirm that this is the best home joystick ever made. Feels like an extension of my lap and doesn't move at all. Thank you MarkGod.

Looking forward to trying SF4 on these suckers!!

Well you should also want the PS3 one because its a HRAP and not an EX2.
I didn't mean instead of the 360 one, I meant just that I want it in general. I'm trying to get a TE instead anyway.

Ah sorry about that. I think both boxes look nice. Just looking at the boxes and not what comes inside I think I'd say I like the white one a bit better.

So, Gaf, i'm thinking about getting this :

hori stick for ps3, what's the general consensus about it? : )

I'm curious how easy this stick is to modify with better parts. I've had this one for a while and got it dirt cheap. Some of the buttons aren't registering at all anymore so I figure if I'm going to have to resolder, I might as well go ahead and mod it. Any suggestions? I'd appreciate it.

Get another stick.

That stick's a POS. If you really want to keep it, replace the buttons with Sanwa buttons. Problem is, you'd have to bend or cut the prongs on the buttons to make them fit into the PCB.

Whew. Finished my stick mod this morning. I took a stock Hori Wii Fighting Stick, and replaced both stick and buttons with a retinue of all-Sanwa parts. At first I intended to replace the stick with a Seimitsu, but the LS-32 stick I have on hand would not have fit easily. I would have had to epoxy the stick harness into the shell, which isn't too bad of an idea, but I wasn't prepared to do that right now, so I switched to a Sanwa JLF stick. Actually, I ripped out the stick from a HRAP3 I have and used that. I used a blank breadboard as a buffer between the PCB and the bottom metal plate. The guides online tell you to coat the inside of the plate with electrical tape, but that seemed a bit ghetto to me, so I did this instead.

The most annoying step was probably the soldering - I originally used 18 gauge wire to connect the buttons to the PCB, but the space is extremely tight in there, so much that the tensile thick 18-gauge wires wound up being too much for the board above it. I had to remove them and re-do it with thinner 22 gauge wires.

I need a Wii/Gamecube game that uses all the buttons so I can test them all, but I can't think of any aside from the Street Fighter games on the VC. Anyone have any other ideas? Maybe Ikaruga allows button mapping and I can test it out that way.

Here's the finished stick:

Awesome, thanks for the heads up.

That looks great. Can you explain how you mounted the JLF? I'd like to do the same to my FS3.

guilty gear ac should have enough. 5 play buttons + taunt + button binding combinations.

also i think the training mode lets you see the buttons as they are pressed.

nice mod too. :)

IGN Review: Hori Real Arcade Pro. EX [7.4]

http://gear.ign.com/articles/952/952254p1.html

C’mon Hori. Step it up. =D

That's... kinda ridiculous.

Here's their ranking:

-SF4 TE
-AIAB
-EX2
-SF4 SE
-weird ass Madcatz stick that's good as a PCB for custom sticks
-HRAP EX :lol

At least they got the first 2 sort of right (maybe not in that order, AIAB has a lot more options). HRAPEX should be in 3rd place imo. SF4 SE should definitely be ahead of the EX2, and the weird ass stick... erm hmm...

They don't like the JLF on the HRAP, but like it on the TE.....

The TE has a massive hype campaign at both grassroots and mainstream levels and is being actively promoted by Capcom itself and tied to both SF4 and the resurgence of a peripheral company previously renowned for poor quality. The HRAP EX, on the other hand, has gotten almost no coverage at all, is by a manufacturer that tends to not be that well-known outside of the fighter community, and looks plain and unremarkable at a glance.

I got something better than the TE... just came in the mail. XCM sent me a review sample:

THE DOMINATOR!

De ja vu, this is the third thread and second forum I have seen this post.

I want to know the results regardless. Have fun Markman.

God that stick is so ugly, maybe in the 80s that shit would be robot cool, but here in the modern era chrome is corny as hell.
