When I went to Tokyo I picked up two of the Dreamcast ASCII Optical sticks... I'd have to say check often and just get lucky. I went to Game Trader in Akihabara and they had a number of hard to find sticks, but the only ones I wanted were the ASCII ones (only 3000 yen each!)...

Thanks for the info! I'm only stopping by Tokyo for a few days before heading to the Philippines with my family, so I probably won't have the luxury of checking often. :( Still, I'll be sure to duck into Game Trader when I go to Akiba and see if I can't luck out and find some ASCIIs too.

Heh, speaking of optical sticks... I just pulled the trigger on a Namco PS1 stick with an ASCII Answer installed. The timing was just too good to pass up - I gave my Namco joystick to my brother a while back, but then recently started traveling to a bunch of gaming sessions so a low-profile stick was looking mighty tempting. I considered the Mad Catz SE because of the various sales, but I've already got converters to have a PS1 stick work on anything so this saves me the effort of picking up new parts and dual-modding as well.

Should arrive in time for Super SF4. :D

I'll be sure to post some impressions about playing on an optical stick vs a micro-switch based PCB once I get my hands on the thing. I... don't know what I'll do without the clicking! :lol

yay did my very first button swap. went to test the stick. Buttons work and everything but the stick can only move up. Also, trying to get the middle bolts on the HRAP3 is impossible.

Wow, Jay, you now mod the cable too? That is boss!!

Guys, you should definitely hit up Akuma001 if you need your TE, HRAP or VSHG dual modded. Or if you don't want to spend the painstaking time to mod the EX2 to be something good.

Purchased a new TE stick, ergonomics and buttons are great, but I've encountered two problems with the joystick and it's really annoying...

1. whenever I hit left on the joystick, it makes this really squeaky sound. it gets really, really annoying.

2. This is tough to describe. Basically, when I move the joystick in a certain direction, usually left, I feel like I'm hitting something before I hit the actual microswitch. It doesn't happen all the time, but it feels worse then the constant squeaking. movement > small bump/hitch > switch. Its happening with all directions.

Don't know what to do, purchased it from madcatz.

also, is the warranty void if you open the stick?

Edit: I have a sanwa jlf in my custom stick that really hasn't had any of these problems. Now I'm getting the second problem with down/right. ugh...

edit 2: having the same problems listed in this thread: http://www.shoryuken.com/showthread.php?t=229085

Opening the stick from the top (via the hex screws on the top panel) does not void the warranty.

Try making sure that nothing is in the way of the shaft as you move the stick to the left - could be a loose wire or something that you're hitting.

Nothing seems to be touching the stick itself; void the wiring harness which may border the gate a little. I fixed the squeaking issues...by replacing the microswitches from my custom stick into the TE.

The sticking issue is happening with all directions.

looking at the 360 version it seems like they're hori buttons
sanwa green doesn't look like that
of course the hues could be off on the image, or my monitor could be out of whack, or a number of things

So ive had my stick about a year and now my joystick is feeling really lose. Anyone know what the problem could be do i need to get a new spring for it or joy spend the money for a new JLF

Unless the image and price lies those are definitely Hori buttons and not Sanwa or even Seimitsu. Colors are wrong and the stick is way too cheap compared to a normal VLX to be anything other than stock garbage.

Doesn't stop me from wanting one though. Would be great for modding.

The V3 SA that this stick is based on was sold at the same price, so I'm inclined to think this is Sanwa "equipped", but on the other hand, their licensed stuff has almost always been stock Hori Buttons...

I could have sworn it cost more than that, but it looks like I was thinking of the VLX that was like 30,000 yen or whatever.

Still doubt it'll be full Sanwa, but at the same time it is an "SA" stick, so maybe...

It's not a problem - just broken in now. It's unlikely that you'll ever have to replace a JLF in a personal joystick outright since they're designed for arcade wear-and-tear, but they tend to feel looser over time compared to when they're brand new.

If you do want it to be tighter, then yeah, replacing the spring (with a new JLF spring or something with more tension, like one out of a Seimitsu) would be your best bet.

So I just ordered the Mushihimesama Futari stick (HRAP Pro EX SE) for my 360 and I have a couple of questions about the buttons. I know they are the Hori buttons and not Seimitsu's but how do they measure up? I'm assuming I'm going to want to replace them fairly quickly (going to be using the stick for shooters, mainly) and I'd like to go with Seimitsu buttons when I do replace them.

I see that the PS-14-G's are the direct replacement but I sort of like the look of the PS-14-KN's better. I've never used a screw in with washer type button before and I just wanted to make sure that 1) they would work and 2)that the installation of the screw in's wouldnt be a major hassle.

I have a little modding experience (I have a modded Mad Catz SFIV SE stick that is full Sanwa) but definitely don't want to get in over my head or in a place where I could potentially damage the beautiful new stick.

So, has anyone used the PS-14-KN's in an HRAP Pro and if so how did the installation go for you? Thanks!

It will be fine, the only issue is the nut for the A button can get caught on the mounting plate for the joystick (at least when put in an HRAP with JLF). You can file it down and it should be no problem.

Thanks for the reply. I'm not switching out the joystick because it's already a Seimitsu part but if it's just a little filing then I should be able to handle that.

Now I just need to figure out what my color spread is going to be for the buttons. Those KN's don't seem to come in black so I'll need to come up with another color that looks good.

You actually can just file down the nut a bit I think, not even the joystick mounting plate.

Do you want solid colors, or clear black buttons?

If you're looking for solid black you want the PS-14-GN (http://www.lizardlick.com/pages/pushbuttons.shtml)

If you're looking for clear black you can actually get the white/clear and paint the inside plunger with a sharpie. I did that here

So I need some help, both of my sticks have presented some issues. Firstly the TE stick I just bought does not register the down command sometimes, I notice if I flip the switch from dpad to right stick it'll work again or if I just keep playing after a few tries it'll start working again anyways.

My other stick is the Tekken wireless HORI, this one won't even sync to the dongle, it's barley been used and is practically brand new. I noticed one of the batteries had exploded slightly but the acid was isolated mainly to the battery door, the rest (a small amount) was on the opposite side and didn't look like it would effect anything. I replaced the batteries and it was working, a friend probably played about 15 rounds with it. A couple days later I tried to use and and assumed the batteries were dead so I bought new ones and can not get it to respond.

So does anyone have any suggestions for the HORI? and about the TE stick, should I return it to Madcatz, or repair myself? I just don't know the turn-around time for the TE, as I want it functioning flawlessly before SSF4 comes out.

My personal opinion is that octo-gates are better for no one. The game is clearly designed for a square gate. Some practice and you'll have no problem doing any of Ryu's moves with it.

Oct-gate makes ultras like Guile's and Vega's next to impossible. (if you're in to low tier characters like me.)
Ledsen said:
Changing the gate isn't magically going to make you better at using the stick... keep the normal gate and just practice, practice, practice, is my advice.

Played on square gates for a couple of years, and it was just headache inducing. Octogate lets me play without tearing my hair out.

What? Where are you getting Hori parts from that webpage? The product details says it uses "Sanwa Denshi parts" and then lists JLF-TP-8YT-SK for the joystick, OBSF-30 for the face buttons, OBSF-24 for Start.
i meant to say sanwa, but typed hori by mistake

I decided I would go ahead and order my buttons today even though my stick won't be here until next week.

I went with 4x clear PS-14-KN's for the buttons that are black on the stick and then a red, blue, yellow and green KN to replace the colored buttons on the stick. I also ordered a clear bubble top, just to complete the look. Hopefully it will look as good as I am imagining and thanks for the help with the selection process.

Awesome, when you get the clear PS-14-KNs just pop out the plungers and take out the white part and color the top black with a sharpie. Worked great for me!

my SE stick showed up today and now I finally got to feel the difference between this and my TE. needless to say, I'm getting new parts. im gonna go seimitsu parts on this one. just one question, do I need the LS-32-01 or can I get the LS-32. The 01 comes with a wiring harness and the regular one doesn't, do I need that?

Yes, get the LS-32-01. It compatible with the 5-pin wiring harness that's already included in the SE. If you get the vanilla LS-32, you'll have to do some stripping and soldering.

Yeah gamingnow.net sent out my JLF the day after I ordered it and the shipping was pretty quick. This was just last week. I went from an LS-32-01 in my SE to the JLF so my SE is now full Sanwa parts while my HRAP SE EX will be full Seimitsu.

I decided to use them again for my new order of PK's and bubble top. Pretty pleased with their service and responsiveness so far.

My optical Namco came in yesterday. :)

With the original box featuring Tekken 3 and Soul Edge, lol.

Very happy to have this as a collector's item (mint Namco + box, yeah!) and it plays like a dream. The combination of a circular gate and optical PCB is unreal - I tested it out in SF4 and MvC2, and any half/quarter-circles and 360s come out so smooth. Though I'm probably not going to use it as my main stick since I do rely on the corners on a square gate quite a bit and I don't want to beat it up like my other Namco (which has paint peeling off the top plate and a grungy bottom plate, heh).

That's awesome. The only optical sticks I've ever played on were Happ perfect 360s (and I hated them!), but I love the standard Hori Namco PS1 sticks. How does the ASCII Answer flash compare to a Happ P360?

That looks awesome! But I don't get the appeal of this stick and the Dreamcast Ascii. Is it optical like a Happ Perfect 360?

I was about to order from gamingnow.net, but they're out of octagonal gates. I'm looking to build a change-of-pace stick of sorts with non-standard TE parts. Does Lizardlick take much longer to ship?

They are. They are pretty much the exact same as Sanwa Flash-1's.

The Namco stick has a cult following because it was the closest thing to arcade spec for years, until the HRAP came out, sporting an actual JLF (well the CPSF stick for SFC/SNES and Megadrive had Sanwa JLWs if I'm remembering correctly). Stock, the Namco stick is microswitched, not optical, and feels kind of like a ghetto JLF. ExMachina has an ASCII Answer optical lever modded in.

and elohel, you can read about optical sticks here:
