Really? I heard that installing the ChimpSMD is a pretty advanced procedure, even without the need to solder stuff.

Keep in mind that the only type of arcade stick "modding" I've ever done is replacing the buttons and stick on my MadCatz SE with Seimitsu PS-15s and the Sanwa JLF drop-in, which might as well be nothing.

The worst that has to be done for a chimpsmd mod is having to cut the usb cable with enough length to strip the inside wires and screw them into the terminals.

I'd say what Hikaru said is the easiest. Because all you're doing is screwing down the three wires after cutting the cord. You're basically just shoving wires into the slots and screwing them down in the Chimp board.
Just check the picture I posted a few posts up. Just basic attaching and whatnot.

Hey guys, figured i'd post in this thread as I didn't want to make a brand new one for what will probably be a very easily answerable question for you knowledgeable folk.

I'm very interested in finally getting a stick for my 360 now that mvc3 is looming. What would you guys consider to be the best out of the box stick for the price on that console. I tried sifting through this thread for a bit for an answer, but it's so dang massive. :lol

The Mad Catz TE is definitely a solid choice (I wouldn't be surprised if they make a MvC3 edition, in fact). The Hori VX-SA is also a great choice with a different form factor and the same parts as the TE, but a tiny bit less. If you want one right now MarkMan posts the frequent Mad Catz sales to easily get a TE for $100 or so.

How do I change templates, open it up and just change it?

Just artwork on a TE? It's fairly easy.

If you have it printed out/cut already and have the plexi all you have to do is open the top via the 6 hex screws (use a 3 mm hex key). You'll have to disconnect the Sanwa buttons via the quick disconnects and pop them out.

Also you'll have to use a flathead screwdriver (or something sturdy enough to unscrew the Sanwa JLF ball top). Once you have the buttons and the balltop off, you can easily remove the existing/default artwork.

Replace and put the parts back in place and rewire it (note the wires are labeled in the terminal strip for the buttons).

Quickly googled and found these links:

All that just to change the template! I just want to change from the white to my Daigo faceplate. :D Then get a White stick.

I thought it was a 5mm hex key?

Can anyone recommend a decent affordable, compact arcade fighting stick, preferably wireless for someone who hasn't played fighters since the late 90s and is thinking about jumping into MvC 3? No idea if such a thing exists but figured I would ask.

There's a decent wireless one bundled with the tekken 6 LE. The bundle tends to go for under $60 these days I think

Edit: yeah, amazon has the bundle for $60 new with free shipping

quick question, does any major arcade stick ground the bottom metal (if it is metal) plate? I hear about that being a potential solution for failing PCBs in the madcatz SE/TE sticks (RH buttons going out) but that wouldn't make too much sense if no other stick is grounded and is reliable.

Welp, I just bought the Blazblue Continuum Shift TE stick on Amazon.
The $70 pricedrop along with Amazon credit burning a hole in my pocket put me over the edge.

Man, I have a metric fuckton of sticks. I was doing so well too; 10+ months without a new purchase. :/

mikespit1200 said:
How about the Tekken stick someone recommended above?

I just picked this guy up recently (the whole package was $45 on Amazon).

I'm not enough of a stick expert to give you a total rundown. But it is small, light and wireless and the buttons and stick in it feel perfectly acceptable for normal usage. I recall MarkMan giving it an "acceptable" rating on Shoryuken but I can't seem to track that thread down. Just don't expect to easily mod the thing, buttons are soldered to a PCB and even the art would be hard to easily change.

I don't think the wreless tekken stick for 360 works on PC. It the very least you would need additional hardware, there is no dongle with the 360 version

Hmm, I think I'd rather go wired just so I can use the stick for shooters and fighters on PC/360. What's the best option for around $40-50?

edit: to be clear I have no desire to do any modding of the stick. Just want something to adequately play some fighters and shmups on 360/PC.

The standard edition madcatz would be fine then

Another thing (sorry, they just keep coming) would it be cheaper to buy a stick with Japanese made parts in Japan? I'm planning a trip to Tokyo in April and I'm curious if I should wait and pick one up while I'm in Akihabara, plus that will be right around when MvC3 releases.

Not necessarily. Especially with how strong the yen is, after you convert your American currency it might come out cheaper to buy the stuff here (Madcatz often sells TE sticks for ~100 from their store). I love JDM sticks though, some of my favorite stuff never comes out here. <3 VSHG

Not really, when you can get Mad Catz ones on sale so frequently in the US. It's actually quite tough to find arcade sticks in B&M stores in Akiba, and the only budget 360 stick you may run into is the Hori Fighting Stick EX... which doesn't use authentic arcade parts anyways and is much more difficult to mod once the knock-off Hori buttons/stick die compared to a Mad Catz SE.

just bought a new Madcatz Tatsunoko stick for the nice price of 18$ new :D

they are having a blowout sale here in Finland.

Im going to swap out the innards for some sanwa action, paint it and make it my new MVS stick <3

edit: make that two sticks ;D

My new MvC3 themed stick, tried to keep to the spirit of the official line whilst making it my own. Fun blend, happy with how it came out.

Looking at all of these awesome custom sticks really makes me want to try my own hand at one. However, I'm still not sure about the Sanwa vs. Seimitsu. If I really enjoyed the buttons my my Agetec Dreamcast arcade stick, which buttons should I go for?

The buttons on the Agetec DC stick kinda feel like knock-off Sanwa OBSFs. The stick on the Agetec looks and feels like a knock-off Seimitsu LS-32 though.

Funnily, the opposite is true for the Namco PS1 sticks, where the buttons try to emulate Seimitsu PS-14s and the stick feels like a Sanwa JLF clone.

HRAP2SARere.png

Akishop just posted up info about pre-ordering the HRAP 2 SA re-release (which is dropping Dec. 18). Pretty pricey... that strong Yen is too killer.

I ordered a Mad Catz SE, pretty excited to get it. I also found a local import shop that sells button/stick parts (Video Games New York for anyone that cares) for reasonable prices $3-4 a pair on buttons, and I think $20ish for sticks. Is there a way to tell if the parts are genuine Sanwa or knock offs?

Ah, thanks for that clarification!

Got the LS-32, mad props to Yes Boss, best gaffer ever :P

In terms of feel I think it's "just right". Spring isn't too weak (JLF) or too strong, engage isn't too far (it's slightly further than my stock sanwa w/jlf mod, a lot shoter than the JLW in my SNES stick), and it seems like it's built to last.

My only issue is the thing is LOUD. It makes a loud knocking noise when you hit the restrictor plate from one of the edges (left, right, up, or down). Minor complaint though.

Loving it so far though. I might swap the levered microswitches in this one with the omrons in the Capcom SNES stick. :D

I think you literally have 10 sticks for every one of mine. Thanks for the offer but I fear I just can't measure up. ;(

edit:
Markman, do you know if we'll ever be able to order the TES slim side panels separately from the madcatz store? I'd love that!

also, my new shit

Your ideas are intriguing to me and I wish to subscribe to your newsletter.

I could use a couple of these.
