Check back a few pages, the Qanba is pretty well-made and a trusted stick. It's one of your best choices if you want a multiplatform stick out of the box without mods.

My DIY Gief stick!

It took waaaay too long because I lost access to drill press, but I finally found the time to get shit done.

No close ups because you can find 100001 things wrong with it because of my workmanship (if you have OCD don't
look at the four corner screws or the spot near gief's nose. I totally misdrilled hardcore lolol
). BUT IT WORKS!

Also, I don't main gief anymore, but my red/black dudley matches <3

Wow, really nice! :)

What stick are you using, and where can I buy that nice carbon-fiber looking ball head?

Good to know. I was planning on building my own stick out of Art's acrylic case and akishop's PS360+ board, but the latter seems to be stuck in development hell and I don't know if I can wait anymore. ;P

edit- looks like they have a 6-button 'conversion kit' with a plexi cover. yummy.

It's looks like a Sanwa Meshball Top in black.

Lizard Lick usually has them but they seem to be out of stock right now.

Ahh, so it's called a meshball top, nice... Incredible how easy it is to find things once you know what keywords to look for! :)

I just found some for the Seimitsu LS-32 stick I (also) ordered from Gremlin Solutions, which I'll be putting into my ghetto Mayflash stick along with some proper buttons as soon as they arrive. Figured it was cheaper + better to just mod my existing stick with real parts rather than shell out $100+ on a new one.

Yep, it's a meshball top. I got it off of Akihabarashop.jp. They're kind of slow and in Japan, so get it from Lizard Lick if they have it in stock. Either way, it looks siiiick. I love it.

Answering my own question here, Jaxel over at 8wayrun.com has confirmed with Hori that the giant black square is a flip cover for the start button so that it cannot be accidentally struck during play.

That is functional, but certainly not compelling. In fact, it is pretty dumb to not just put them on the front edge or side of the stick and instead drop them squarely in the art space.

I'm out on this one.

WTF? Dudes accidentally hit start/select buttons during play now? How does that even happen?

So I have the opportunity to buy two Dreamcast arcade sticks for $60 (total). One is the instantly-recognizable grey ASCII stick with the green buttons; one is a no-name that looks like a toy.

I already own one of the ASCII sticks, so this could be a second, a spare or a first soldering project, as I've never soldered anything before. My questions:
1) Difficulty-wise, how hard would modding the DC ASCII stick be, for a first-time solderer? I'd probably want to go with a Sanwa JLF and some flavor of Seimitsu buttons.
2) Is $60 a fair price for the ASCII these days? I don't care about the toy, so it's as if I was just buying that, really.

Thanks much =)

I'm pretty sure Agetec made that stick, not ASCII.

$60 seems like the going price these days, but if you're buying it just to mod, try talking the seller down a bit.

Sweet. Ended up ordering from Lizard Lick after all, as it ended up being cheaper than buying from Gremlin Solutions - and I live in Europe! :)

Although it was listed under the Sanwa parts, the description says it will fit "all Seimitsu joysticks", so I hope it fits my Seimitsu LS-32. Only problem is that it's currently on "pre order", so no idea when I'll actually get my hands on it...

SOUL Edition FightStick will be available when the game is out, at or around the same time. I'll post when they're avail.

Also...

Like the old days. I'll be using http://sdtekken.com to report on new arcade stick news/ramblings. Also the @SDTEKKEN twitter account. Which might have some 'new' info if you guys don't follow already.

Cheers.

Yup, balltops are universal. I have a Sanwa ball on my LS-32 as well.

After a brief SNAFU with my order, my LS-40-01 finally arrived today. So far I'm liking it.

It's got such a stiff spring that even my aluminum bat top doesn't make it feel loose.
If you hate the wobbling of a stick when it's in neutral: this stick is for you.
If you want a short throw and high responsiveness: get it.
If you use an LS-32-01 and cannot stand the little jump when you hit the gate: go for it.
If you're all over Sanwa's nuts because everyone else is: I dunno what to say other than try it because it's different and just feels good.

Did any of the above sound like something "she would say" or any other idioms? Get your mind out of the gutter.

In short: kudos to paradise arcade for getting my order shipped to me quickly... twice. I've found my replacement for LizardLick, with whom I have been a customer for 6 years (and who seems to have fallen from the face of the planet). This stick rocks (be sure to get the S mounting plate for a TE/SE!).

PS: I'm too lazy to read through the thread again, but for the person complaining about deflection when releasing from neutral: try this thing. Even with the aluminum bat top being so heavy on it and hammering the inputs, I literally couldn't make it hit an opposite direction when I tried (and I did try). If you get it and it STILL deflects then it's something you're doing.

Sounds good to me! I'll give one a try in my PS360 build. Yeah. I decided to do it as originally planned. Art's acrylic cases are just too nice :)

Awesomesauce! Will buy for next modding project. How useful is this stick for shooters? I would think the shorter throw would help with precision dodging, yes?

From what I tested last night (3SOE and Guwange) I would say yes. I need to pop in Futari or MMP/PS or something to test, but it definitely feels better for this sort of thing.

Sounds great. I just picked one up myself from Paradise Arcade Shop. Now to decide on which case to drop it into. I've been eyeballing that Exar Sanwa stick that's supposed to hit next week, but all the love for Qanba in this thread has me rethinking that. Maybe a Q2 then?

Make sure you can either mount the stick flat or that you got an S plate if it has a mounting bracket like the FightSticks from Mad Catz have, otherwise it'll be short.

Yeah, I've been checking out pics of the Qanba innards all day, and their sticks use offsets with a straight mounting plate, so a stock LS-40-01 should just drop in. We don't know what's inside the Exar stick yet.

I kind of have all my components lined up, but have one question. Can I use a Sanwa dust washer made for a JLF with a shaft cover on a Seimitsu LS-40 with the stock Seimitsu shaft cover? Another words, can I just swap dust washers? Qanba makes all sorts of cool multicolored stuff, but they seem to love Sanwa, so their colored dust washers are obviously tailored for those sticks.

I had actually compared an LS-32 dust washer (since the shaft is so thick) to the 40 with the shaft cover on and it was barely too small to fit. However, I put one of my spare JLF dust washers made for going around a JLF shaft cover on the 32 and it had plenty of room. I'd say it will fit just right.

This news fills me with happiness. Thanks for all the info man.

Exar EXAPRIZE USB Stick Sanwa Edition product page:

JLF-TP-8Y, OBSF-30's and 2.5m cord.

Digital mode can be activated by holding Start and Select when inserting the device into a PC.

Amazon.co.jp seems to have sold out of these already? They're only available from resellers. Still no guts pictures.

Of all the fall sticks, this one is the stick I'm most interested in. Wish other companies would go for smaller form factors with nice parts.

So many new stick in the next few weeks! Just saw the new Blazblue sticks and those look quite nice.

Yeah? Who's making them? I wanna see!

I went with the PS3 version cause it looks a little less tacky and it wil go with my all white button Madcatz 360. Still sad I missed the last one which, along with the blue amazon.jp stick, is keeping me from a complete collection :-(

Hori also has this old HRAP lined up for december:

Whoa, dipping back into that HRAP2 design? But those buttons look like Hori, not Sanwa. Another Tekken 6 HRAP situation?

Yeah, gonna be a typical solder job to switch those out. Still, nice to have a dedicated stick for the game!

So many sticks this time of year. MarkMan's Namco sticknis the one to beat, though!

Didn't the Tekken 6 stick use quick disconnects? My memory is fuzzy but I recall it being a first for licensed HRAPs.

How much does one of these things go for?

I'm holding one hostage and might rip it apart...but if its rare then i'll decide against it.

Ok, so complete noob when it comes to arcade sticks. But I want to get one for PS3/PC for use in UMvC3 and SF4. I've had a couple suggestions so far and want more of GAFs input.

1) Someone on GAF said I could get the Wii TvC and USB adapter. My friend said it's easy to mod but reviews online are iffy about PS3 playback, can anyone here confirm/deny on this?

2) Friend said a Hori stick
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B0035N6KQ2/?tag=neogaf0e-20
I think it was this one.

3) Finally friend said this one b/c it's easy to mod and I can get rid of the wrestling logo for another one, lol:
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B004M23RAC/?tag=neogaf0e-20

When I say mod in all of these he said they all come with a square <insert name, forgot the name> and replace it with an octagon piece (the thing that controls the joystick).

I don't want to be pro, I just LOVE the button layouts of these and want to have more fun playing my fighting games, so I don't want this to be insanely expensive but I don't have a problem spending $50-$100, at least that's what I was hoping on.

Get a Madcatz Tournament Edition (TE) stick. Easily modable and good build quality.

If you also want 360 support (in case you wanna bring it out to local gatherings) then get a Qanba Q4RAF.

I think one or two gaffers use the TvC stick + adapter. The brawl stick is also a good choice. It uses the same parts as the TvC stick as far as I know.

No need to switch from a square gate to an octagon gate, IMO. What you might want to do down the road is swapping the parts for sanwa or seimitsu parts (the ones used in Japanese arcades).

It's a square gate, i say give the square gate a chance.
That madcatz brawl stick is easy to swap parts out of, but changing the art is a little bit more of a pain. I've got the 360 version of that wireless hori stick and it doesn't feel great.

TvC stick works well on PS3 with the adapter but the buttons are recognized oddly so you'll have to change them in every game. If you're going to get that you might as well get the WWE stick since they are the same parts inside.

If you plan on spending any real time using it, you're better off spending an extra $50 on a higher quality stick. You'll spend that same amount of money on replacement parts for the cheaper stick anyway.
