Stick
Buttons

However if you want to get a little more crazy there are lots of other types and styles of sticks and buttons out there. If you want a guide for this and like geeky technical stuff I would just go ahead and read the first 10 or so pages on slagcoins guide to joysticks. It gets into custom stick detail far more then you would need later on, but the early parts of the guide have a really good intro to the different types of arcade sticks and buttons that are out there.

Thanks for the links! That guide is nice read, granted it does go into way more depth than I really need but still its good to know.

So GAF I decided to jump into the world of arcade sticks and picked up a madcatz wwe brawlstick from gamestop for 30 dollars.

Now I know this is by no means the greatest stick in the world but from what I've seen and read it seems to be fairly easy to mod, which was all I was looking for.

So if anybody could give me some recommendations on what to upgrade or change to make it a bit better than just the standard stick I would appreciate it. Right now, with my limited time with it, the only compliant I have is the stick seems a bit loose but maybe that's just me. I know there are dozens of different style and types of buttons but I have no idea what ones are the best to have.

Finally, if anybody could point me in the right direction for changing the art on the stick, I would be grateful. I've already ripped off the default sticker thing and just have the metal plate showing. I don't know if I'm stuck with just getting another lami-label(sp?) or if there are other options out there.

Thanks in advance

Most common recommended upgrade would be Sanwa JLF stick, and Sanwa OBSF 30mm buttons. There are other options depending on preferences.

Lami-label appears to be a popular and viable way to change the art. You just need a proper template for placement - http://www.capcom-unity.com/s-kill/blog/2009/02/09/diy_stick_art_sfiv_fightstick_faceplate_templates - Lightning Label Customs is also developing a plexi (or plastic), for the SE with the curve and everything.

Yes,

I wound up getting stuck up on the mountain for an extra week do to massive snow and the helicopters were not flying. I see my inbox is full so I'll be posting the entries later this evening!

Also, saw that somebody forgot to send in the entry, if you want to send it in the next few hours that would be cool!

Do places sell pre-cut lami-labels? I'm gonna be horrible at cutting.

I did the same thing and I'm blindly going with a Sanwa JLF because it's recommended a lot. Hope to get it and install in this week.

The place I ordered from is out of stock and focusattack.com is out of stock as well. Someone should be able to find you a place.

Gonna look into buttons and art in the future.

Nice. Good luck to all the entrants.

Firstly, I'd like to thank everybody who participated in the contest!

When you see yours don't give it away as I'd like the winning picture to be selected in a vacuum.

Lots of variety. I got a total of thirteen entries.

I won't be picking the winner. Hopefully MarkMan will want to!

I posted them via photobucket cause that is really all I know how to use and I did not re-size because that was causing trouble with my slow internet.

Also, if I missed yours then let me know...I think I got them all but, again, my internet is really slow and it took a bit of effort to cut and paste all the photos.

Here they are in random order:

First one click this link to see it blown up (scale over picture for magnifying glass and click):

Ha ha! Great stuff in there. I vote for Starbucks Warrior.

By the way, arcade5point2.jpg is scaled too low to read teh funny.

Yeah,

That one was giving me trouble on photobucket. I put a link on it so that you can see it. I really don't know how to post it otherwise (maybe somebody could help):

I don't know anything about Photobucket, so I can't help much. It looks like the text is so small that any scaling will clobber it though. Maybe just a direct link to the source from the scaled version could work.

Damn I got caught up and forgot to take my own picture. Good luck everyone!

I have a question. What type/size are those allen/hex screws on the MadCatz fight sticks? The ones that hold the art in. Mine are in danger of being stripped and I would like the replace them if I could. Does MadCatz sell them?

Thanks

They're 5mm, I believe.
Toodles sells stainless replacement ones in several colors. Check for "TE Bolts."

Oh hey, the pictures are up! Thanks for posting 'em and for running the contest Yes Boss!

I'll refrain from commenting on my favorites since I have my own entry in the mix, but some fun shots up there.

Yeah I want to comment as well, but since I entered, I'll just keep my mouth shut for now. Very creative ideas though. Really love it! Great idea for a contest. :)

O hai guys wanna see my stick mod?

Nice! Yeah I'm having a hard time finding a JLF. I've found a few on amazon but I'm not sure if I want to buy one from there. Most of the sites people have recommended in previous posts seem to be sold out now, so I might just wait.

As far as pre-cut lami-labels, I haven't seen any. I'm hoping I can just use an x-acto knife to cut the holes. I haven't even decided what to put on it yet, I just knew the default art was not for me.

The buttons seem ok so far so I probably won't change those just yet. Is there any advantage to the buttons that screw on compared to the ones that clip in? Or is it just personal preference?

Custom stick complete!

Case by NiteWalker -- Who was fantastic. Short turn around time, pleasant and friendly, and the case is really well done.
Paewang Revolution PCB
Sanwa JLF-TP-8YT, OBSN-30/24 buttons

The green looks a bit different in real life due my poor camera/lighting conditions, but you get the idea.

Neato. I have a custom green Dreamcast pad with that same JSR insignia.

I played a bunch of UDHD last night with the Underbrawlstick. I think the LS-40 just became my favorite Seimitsu part. It's not as stiff as the venerable LS-32, but that (near) instantaneous engage is so awesome. Now I can flail while I shoot and actually dodge some bullets maybe.

Will that stick mount easily in a HRAP VS SA?

How timely. Looks great!

I have a picture in the contest, so I won't comment on my favorites just yet, but a big thanks to Yes Boss! for organizing it. Really badass of you.

Got my first real stick today, swapped the stick to a bat and after playing, holly shit!!!! the diference with this stick vs my old cheap-o $39 stick is night and day. The stick is smooth as a babies ass, and the buttons are fantastic.

Just need something to play now, SFxTekken is still two weeks out :(

Yep. Get an LS-40-1 (for the PCB/harness installation) and the S-plate used for proper mounting of an LS-32, since they both have the same shaft height. Basically if you can mount a JLF or LS-32 with the proper mounting ptes, you can mount an LS-40.

Yeah, I just got a HRAP VX-SA myself about a week ago. It's pretty great. I was surprised at how big it is, though.

Here it is, my latest custom mod: "Poison Has a Stick".

Yes, notworksafe beat me to the punch, but I still attest to the fact that I hadn't seen his stick before coming up with this idea. I hadn't originally planned to go all Seimitsu with this one, but now I'm glad I decided to in terms of ascetics. I mean—you just can't not laugh at the use of the pink joystick in relation to the entire idea that's going on here.

My one thing as of this moment is I'm not super-hot on the pink joystick base cover, as it ruins the fun/polish of the stick by being able to see the plate hole. The default black cover I have has a hole too small for this Seimitsu, so I might try to see if I can find a replacement or drill out the one I currently have. That, or maybe I'll grow to love the pink one.

(Oh, and the line in the second shot is just a stray somethingoranother, not an actual crease in the label as it looks.)
