Didn't really expect that my kids would end up showing up on the front page of Kotaku from that photo contest. Though I will say that I'm glad that I kept their faces out of the pic, might as well keep a bit of anonymity on the internet. Now I just have to figure out what Tekken characters I need to dress them up as next for the release of TTT2

I got one of the SE Street Fighter sticks as my first one and then learned to mod on that one. Those are going for 40-50 bucks online if not cheaper. Of course you could always go TE and not have to worry about modding!

Probably. You can test it by turning the PCB on the stick itself one or two turns to switch up the directions, then if it still happens with whatever direction that microswitch is sitting in now you know it's the PCB. They are about $13 from focusattack or paradise arcade and really easy to swap out.

Very quick. I ordered on a Monday or Tuesday and had my parts by Friday.
Thanks. Is modding required or would an unmodded SE stick be fine for a beginner, or would it build bad muscle memory or something akin to that?

It's fine for learning on but the generic parts (joystick and buttons) get beat up and will need to be replaced with Sanwa/Seimitsu parts pretty quickly.
It's never taken more then 3 business days to get my stuff in CA. I've placed probably 4-5 orders with him.

Whenever they get those ChimpSMD's in stock, I'm gonna mod my incoming SCV stick so it can play PS2 as well...and maybe add some TTT2 style art to it, even though I play Tekken on pad (Probably something with Ling, Askua/Jun). Anyways thanks for the deal on those stick Markman!

Nice pickup, d0c_zaius. VSHG is still my favorite retail stick, followed by the HRAP EX-SE.

since I've never seen one in person, what makes them so special. i have a few HORI ones and a MadCatz Pro stick and love them all. I just always see people raving about the VSHG. can you tell me more about it?

It's nice and heavy yet a bit smaller than the TE, the button layout is Sega style and therefore awesome, it feels nice to use and rest your hands on, and it looks stylish as hell without needing to do anything to it.

A couple of the reasons I think why the VSHG is legendary is that it probably served as the framework for modern arcade stick designs. It also looks similar to what can be found in Sega Lindbergh cabinets. It was cheap when it was introduced years back but since it has been out of production for years, they have went up. Also uses a Sega Lindbergh layout stock which is similar to the GDLK Astro City 1P layout.
It also looks cool. If it had mounting plates for Seimitsu levers... It could have been a definitive stick for 3rd Strike players.
I thought Virtua Fighter 5 Final Showdown would encourage Sega to bring it back but nope.

Couldn't pass this one up over here, they're getting harder and harder to find. I'm not particularly fond of the case (BTW this is the same case being used in the upcoming Guilty Gear stick), but now that it has Sanwa parts it makes everything better, right?

This much is true. I studied the VSHG heavily and even reviewed it back when it first came out. I used it a lot in my study in developing early Mad Catz FightSticks.

It's amazing how much the new HORI SCV stick referenced the design of the TE stick! The artwork application, the internal structure, the side panels being modular etc. Even the same mounting plate! It's like they took our base design from 2008 and added some extra stuff (which I like, except the trap door, lol). I don't blame them, I think it's a way better move then answering back with the HRAP V3/VX series.
Now don't get me wrong, I love the V3/VX series but there were a lot of things as a fan/consumer that I did not like. Artwork application is one and artwork fading is another. Also the weight. I'm aware that you can always make things heavier but it was obvious from customer feedback that they needed more heft, thus bringing their SCV stick to a solid .5 lbs more than the current TE.
The best part out of all this. It makes me very happy to see arcade stick companies (not just Hori), making constant improvements/additions to their product portfolio. As a fan/collector, it means more stuff for me to buy, but it also breeds for stronger competition amongst companies/brands.
From what I heard, it won't be for awhile. Later this year seems likely.

So, GAF. How do I begin modding my arcade stick? Specifically, art. Do I need to buy anything to begin customizing the art or can I do it/print it all myself (or from a print shop)? What are these plexis I hear of mentioned casually and what is their function?

I received SCV TE stick from a UK retailer today with a torn box and the seals on the inner removed. I figured, fair enough, so long as the stick itself was alright, I could deal with some damage to the box.
Nope.
The thing feels used. It feels I don't know, dusty? Also, is there meant to be a clear film on the art? There's a couple of scratches on the red side and... the LB button doesn't work at all. I'm so pissed right now.

So from what I deduce.. your regular stick art is attached to the back of a piece of plastic which means it can not be changed, and the only way to add custom art is to use a piece of plexiglass instead so that you can wedge some custom art underneath without it being physically attached to the rest of the stick? Is that correct; or is some sort of adhesive used to attach the art? What's the difference between a panel replacement and a panel cover?
Considering doing an Iron Man themed stick. Sketching out ideas in my head for if I get the time, and looking for appropriate art that's high enough resolution.

No adhesive is used to attach the art. Panel replacement is a whole cover replacement (made out of sturdy plexiglass). Panel cover is just a plexicover.
