No, I honestly tried to give you some good faith feedback on a community I cared a lot about. I posted here a ton during the exodus and in the days after to try to deter as many people as I could from leaving and to keep this place alive. I thought we had a great opportunity to turn around a legendary gaming site and I bought in on the vision you laid out for us. I've made a greater effort into creating OTs to that end and put a lot of effort into them.

But I guess I'll just take that permaban now instead.

Alright fellas. I have come to the decision that I no longer wish to participate in politics. Half of it is because I am afraid I may get emotional and say something stupid but other half is that I honestly enjoy posting on NeoGaf too much. I have a lot of fun here and I don't want some posters who liked me to feel uncomfortable with me anymore for a take I have. There are a lot of posters here I like and I don't want to drive them away.

I have been posting less there anyway and doing some low effort ones too. This past year in my country has been emotionally exhausting for me and I don't see it as particularly healthy for me either. Thanks to those who respected my opinions along the way I appreciate that. Peace and love.

And that's one thing I like about GAF is that EviLore and co. will listen and maybe reconsider the infractions they hand out to users. I wasn't part of GAF during the split but I think it's safe to say we aren't heading in a similar direction, as long as we continue to have dialogue between the community and people in charge.

Wise decision IMO. I wasted so much fucking time and energy arguing politics online in my 20s and early 30s. Realized it was unhealthy and unproductive (too easy to get sucked into arguments and waste hours when I should be working, could be playing games etc.). Just pointless as pretty much no one changes their mind or gives an inch arguing with random people online, even more true these days with how divided people are. I have largely stayed away from talking politics online for nearly a decade now and it’s been a huge positive change. Zero regrets.

I don’t spend much time discussing politics with friends or family in real life either. I just read news, try to stay informed, vote and donate. Beyond that most of it has zero impact on my daily life so no reason for me to be super emotionally invested in it. I’ve had democrats and republicans swap power multiple times in my adult life when I was old enough to pay attention and none of it has had any real effect on my life.

Forums should be a positive, fun thing. If one isn’t getting that out of them (or a specific one) it’s time to reassess how one engages with them. It’s taken me a lot of thinking over the years to break the cycle of forum addiction and just engage with sites and topics that I enjoy. I encourage others to do some soul searching and figure out how to make productive and fun use of them as well. For me it’s mostly sticking to gaming threads (and not fanboy, console warring nonsense) and random fun threads here and there.

Political discussion is fine if one enjoys it and isn’t going off the deep end with the looneys on the extremes on either side. When it stops being fun, informative etc. it’s good to step away for a while, or for good if needed. I’m glad the politics subforum exists here to at least keep that stuff isolated. Throwing it on ignore is among the first things I did when joining and I’m glad to be able to browse off topic, even if I don’t post there that much as I’m here for gaming talk and news, without having to skim past all that crap like back in the day or in my brief stint over on ResetEra.

Neogaf a gaming site and we should all be here to have fun discussing our hobby and random shit in off topic regardless of how different our values and political beliefs are.

He meant the opposite, "You should raise your child to think for himself and use reasoning and evidence to decide if what they are being told is factual". In context is wasn't a particularly positive bit of advice.

I've been watching the changes percolate through the last week or so and kind of just let them unfold. I can't help thinking a lot of people should have just done the same to be honest. I don't really go into politics, I learned ages ago when I was into the sportsworld forums, politics are not really a good addition to most hobbyist/enthusiast boards. They rarely go below surface level issues that are currently in the news cycle, and nowadays it's even worse given twitter and social media. Most of these boards (across all forums) are now just an extension of reaction threads, articles have been replaced with tweets and counter tweets which spawn endless threads. Don't get me wrong, I think some threads are a good fit for this type of update (live and developing events), but when a random tweet is used as evidence for a societal issue and for everyone to just use as a placard for the cause it becomes messy.

A lot of us post here because we are principled people, in that we accept principles have a cost and cause us to self reflect on certain views we hold. But I do think there is a danger whereby people fall into the trap of making that 'principled persona' their own form of identity politics. Whereby to bend in the face of change means to sacrifice eveything you believe you are, and thus it is better to become a martyr for the cause. I think that's why we've seen a few surprising faces choose to leave or go over the top very quickly - and that's not a criticism, it's more a view on where we are holistically.

However, I don't think the new policies or shift in change was ever directed at these individuals (maybe a handful would have had to reign in their partisan threads or phrase their controversial views better), which is where I think it would have been better to maybe see it through first. The 'adapt' phase wasn't applicable to those people in the first instance and they jumped straight to 'react' sadly. The new policy seems to centre around conspiracy theories and context more than anything, avoiding those topics from blowhards who try to create a frenzy. For instance, I would never take any Alex Jones thread seriously or David Icke. I think this is just about replacing volume and weight of support for an argument and placing it against facts and logic.

Personally, I think maybe a 'News and current affairs' title would be better. It's rare there is anything outside the current news cycle and 'Politics' did serve a purpose initially as OT was over run by every stupid update on Brexit, elections but there is very rarely any thread about cultural, societal or policy topics from a higher level than what is currently on the news stations. It would also dilute a lot of the red/blue topics in direct contrast if there are other news items in there that are more general day to day topics. At the moment politics is a battleground of topics that fall into FOR or AGAINST the administration. If there were other news worthy items in there like the recent Indonesian plane crash, COVID 19, broader megathreads about China, space exploration etc. it might round out the animosity in there.

Lastly, I'd say various sites can only moderate and affect policy within the current climates. Sometimes it will be necessary to adjust course based on that. I think GAF is still the 'freest' site I visit in terms of opinions, I intepret what is being asked as a simple request to avoid reposting shite to get loads of replies because everyone gets angry and have a bit of self responsibility when choosing what to post. Not everything needs a topic, and certainly not the latest 'white man sucker punched in Baltimore' tweet, or 'MAGA is full of white supremacists' crowd shots. I think that's all that is being asked for and it seems reasonable.

It's like steering a boat, you oversteer, then you turn back and end up constantly snaking from one side to the other, forever locked in a battle trying to rediscover the centre. You can distance yourself so far from where you want to be, you run past the centre and just arrive at the other end. I think all that's happening is a strong hand is making a little shift that can have a substantial impact on the general health of discussions. GAF is different, and I think that should extend to politics as well, we don't want to look like a twitter war in forum format, or other forums that lose their minds instead of being able to talk it through.

The issue with discussing politics and I’m going to state the obvious here - our views on things are never gonna change someone else’s feelings and how they vote or how they lean politically.

When the attack on the Capitol happened two weeks back it was the first and last time I got involved with a political debate on here. I came away disappointed by some people’s thoughts on stuff but, hey, it’s their thoughts and they’ll probably feel the same about mine.

Basically, talking politics on a website dedicated to gaming, in my opinion, is a futile exercise and our time could be spent talking about games and having fun instead.

I spent five minutes at Era and left because I don’t want to talk about politics within every fucking thread. I can get my dose of politics at a million other places, I don’t need it in my ‘hobby space’ kind of thing.
