Drawing a Day: Day 2

Done in whiteboard. New record I guess? (Since I only managed to do one day before lol) It's a 2ho and also I hate how recently I've been messing up my body proportions when drawing. Like here I've been done tiny necks and oversized heads even though I never had the problem before and I'm finding it really annoying.

Day 66, ~2hrs.

I love those figures. Great stuff.

I think it's much better now than before but there are some angles that don´t seem quite right to me yet, I will keep working on other parts.

Honestly, it looks good. Don't get too wrapped up in making it look identical to the photo. That's not what painting is about. Too much more and the time might be better spent with another study.

Eye is a doodle to kill some time, ~40min
And some plant shape sketches, ~20min

Tried to draw Link as a girl and redesign the tunic for funsies but I swear to GOD he looks like a girl already

What the hell can I do? longer eyelashes? smaller nose?
boobs?

1hr45min :(

Thanks, I was trying to get the "likeness" right but like you said maybe I got too wrapped up trying to get every shape right. I also think I will finish this one as a proper "piece" by focusing more on the kitty and changing the background.

Btw I like your plant sketches.

Day 3. Digital drawing. Roughly about 15-20 minutes. I don't like how it looks but since I suck really bad at perspective I'm relatively pleased with how this has turned out (still not that happy with it though).

That's a much better background than the earlier one you edited out ;) It's looking really good. I think the angle on it might be a little sharp. Zoom out and flip it horizontally then see if you think it might be better to rotate it a bit. That's minor, though. Really well done.

I'm really bad at sci fi stuff ( i think i might have said before) so still practising...30 mins per robo

I then realised I didn't draw and legs, then realised I didn't know how to draw good shoes. So i studied some shoes. About 1 minute per shoe.

I always cringe slightly inside when showing sketches.

Really cool sketches. Love the lines. I hope you post more :)

Toastbot. ~30min. Just messing around this afternoon.

I doodled this today, about five ours. I don't claim this design to be fully myown, it is heavily inspired by another artist's work.

Just can't figure out the colors for the pants and shirt, if someone has any ideas go for it. :)

Took a shot at designing my robo-people from the inside out.

The Mechrodian aren't androids or anything, they're straight-up mechanical, silicon-based life, so I had some fun figuring their biology out. At their core, they have very simple, 3D model-esque "skeletons" which are then covered in a skin of darker nanomachines which are elastic and basically work like space skin. All of their vital organs (processors and whatnot) are stored inside their ultra-dense skeletons, though their anatomy is practically inverted depending on "gender." Mechrodian infants can be created by any number of willing contributors (even a single one) and are built, not born, as a much more androgynous-looking creature. Around 4 or 5 (the same time they develop self-awareness), they slowly develop some of their humanizing traits like gender identity, asexual orientation, a "digital soul," and all that.

Self-awareness means they do feel concepts like morality, which is why they're wearing workout jammies. They have all sorts of neat outfits. The azure lines are "currents" poking through, which are basically conduits full of coolants, electrical activity, and what have you. Silicon equivalent of veins. The oddball shoulders on the ladybots mean that most of their shirts are sleeveless and just make them swing for gloves if they want.

Took about 40 minutes, usual material.

That looks really good, even more so considering that it only took you 2hrs.

Thanks, today I wanted to focus on the rendering of the fur but I will take your advice into account

Day 4

dad3_by_evilisk-d6kfn57.png

Done in Adobe Illustrator (since I have no access to a tablet on a weekend and wanted to try something different). Despite how simple this is, I'm pretty disappointed in myself that it took my about 20 minutes just to do this.

Just did this one took me seven hours or so. Like my prior post this character is some concept for a story I'm writing.

That said my sister has been wanting to take part in this thread, but doesn't have an account. I'll just be posting her daily along side mine. :)

She said it is suppose to be of some sort of fishlady.

Thanks yo!

Started colouring a robo today after working on some commissions.

Spent a very distracted 2 hours on it. Most of my time was wasted trying to decide colours. So indecisive ...
I know what that feels like, sat there for a while trying to figure out the color scheme. For my previous post I still can't figure out what color the shirt and tights should be and then I'm not even sure I like the color scheme for the image I just posted.

Drawing a Day: Day 5
Decided to draw something out on paper. Character is Peacock from Skullgirls with an alternate/random outfit. Normally I actually do lots of sketching out but I decided to actually draw something straight from scratch. Turned out okay but as always something is wrong with the head.

The outfit is weird. It ended up being super random because I wanted to do a cool alt outfit since I don't like Peacock's normal outfit (a bit too plain) but then I changed what I wanted to do halfway through so it ended up being a frankenstein outfit lol

Have you thought about using Adobe Kuler? I find the pallets can be pretty handy when trying to find out what works well together and what doesn't, though really I need to brush up on my colour theory :c

More work on this today, though not very much. Not taking this picture too seriously, but I'm pretty satisfied with how it's coming along so far. Did do some mroe shoe sketches earlier but, haven't scanned them yet.

I think I'm drawing to a close now.

I also have this other background which I could use too

Btw I just bought these two, my 2nd art related purchase after I bought my bamboo tablet 8 months ago.

The Spirit of Art is sooooo good. I'm only 50 pages in but I can see myself reading it multiple times, some paragraphs are so frisson inducing that I have to make a pause to let the sensation sink in. The Artist's complete guide to Drawing the Head seems very promising, it was also very cheap considering it size, paper quality and its color drawings, the only "drawback" I see with it so far is that it uses traditional media for its instructions, kind of makes me tempted to try my hand at it.

do you guys use reference for your drawings? (for specific body parts, weapons, texture references...)

Or are you mainly drawing from memory/experience?

Day 6

Meh today just wasn't my day. Tried to draw Illeum (from Skullgirls) before I remembered I find her super difficult to draw without practicing heaps first, pen ran out of ink while I was in the middle of drawing lol also screwed up the shading all over the face etc.

How many of you guys are working from scratch in a paint program (Photoshop, Corel Painter or Manga Studio) without sketching on paper? I have never used a computer but thinking about grabbing a decent tablet and something like Manga Studio to start out with.

Mixture of both. I often make mental notes through my day while just doing whatever to apply to my work. I have some reference photos saved to study anatomy and some other things, but tend to use references most when I'm stuck figuring out how something would work.

I have some stuff I've done starting from digital line work, but I find i get far too meticulous and just waste time trying to perfect the line work (to the point where it looks stiff). So I start all my paintings with pencil sketches. Much faster.

What I will say is , don't expect to be suddenly better at arting if you grab a tablet. And likewise, don't expect it to be the same as drawing on paper either. Feels pretty different.

Finished this thing today (finally)

ibv2OAIiowlFHK.jpg

And the entire reason I painted it was just to make some gifs.

I prefer the first one really. Took me about 4 hours to finish up the painting today and about an hour or so to make the gif look alright. Record time for me, but at the same time, I feel like the quality of his arms and whatever isn't so hot....

I do all the time if you want some indication of quality.

I just got a Galaxy Tab 3 10.1! Does anyone know any good Android apps for lineart? Colors/brushes aren't a big deal.

Oh man, you guys are all so good. After some classes and some practice I'm pretty decent at product drawing but anything organic with odd curves or anatomy absolutely wrecks me. Any particularly good resources you guys recommend? I mean, the library is thick with "learn to draw" books, but any you found that particularly excelled?

Either way, I think I'll get in on this, even if most of what I'm drawing are chairs and phones and stuff.
