NeoGAF Drawing-a-Day Thread

^Everone should draw knights with red capes. Good for 2 hours though!

Really loving what I'm seeing. Oatmeal and C.B. throwing it down!

So art gaf my computer is broke (has been for a while) and doing actual artwork is a pain because I have to travel an hour (by bus) to the library. If anyone knows of really good computer deals -- since I'm totally broke -- let me know.

With that said I've finally filled up my bus sketchbook and I may scan some junk in. For now I'll just post library art and art that I've done since being banned:

Can't have you showing me up Foxy. Also, 3 pictures? You were banned for like a whole damned year. Smh.

Haven't been able to post much since I've been trying to work (but I somehow haven't really completed a whole lot since last post?)

Working on (yet another) commission. Of more knights. Standing around. Wanted to try something more dynamic but don't have the time to afford too much experimenting. Expression is a bit lifeless atm.

I'm not even sure how or why you got banned but I'm glad you're back! Hope you get funds somehow for a new shiny computer.
Also, I guess GAF Art Book is never happening? I was kind of really looking forward to that. :c

Hey guys...it's been like...2 months since my last painting...Yeah I got burnt out but...I did this for fun while watching SGDQ

Took about 2-3 hours, but there was no pressure for it to be done for another person, so I was able to focus and get it done.
Feels good.
Yeah! You're getting better and I think faster every time! No pressure art is usually the best kind. :)

I dunno, that dog looks pretty cool to me. I also am so drawn to the slightly transparent dress and subtle crotch. XD

I don't have anything exceptional to show, but here's some headshot doodles I made for forum role-playing reference purposes:

It probably took over an hour.. which it wasn't supposed toooooo!

Yeah not sure what's what with the artbook. We ran into issues with it being video game art and selling/distributing fan art. Personally I'm fine with skirting the boundaries of IP infringement. We have a lot done though. Found a good printer, had a good amount of text already written. I may look over and revive it if that's something that people are interested in but I feel the move to Community killed the last thread and this one seems pretty dead so I'm not sure how much interest there would be.

The good news is that we could just have a few very dedicated artists creating content for it instead of the massive list of +30 that we had before ... if it's still on the table that is.

Also it was a self requested ban.

You know how to reach me if you need me.

Also thanks prax! I just don't feel quite as confident painting animals. Need to study them more.

12 hours roughly total. Normally I have some reservations about "speed paint" commissions but I feel like this one actually came out okay. Still have a lot to learn though and sure I'll hate it give or take a few weeks. Done in PS btw.

Inks and colorsss.

Prax: Normally my stuff is RLY messy. I switched to a new lead though recently so it doesnt smear as much. Thanks though!

KuroNeeko: Thanks! And that thing was the symbol I was gonna use in the eye of the skull but I remembered that was the symbol from harry potter and just went with a simple triangle, hah.

C.B.: You redic.

Guys, I know this isn't drawing help thread but...

I'm reading creative illustration by andrew loomis right now and understand values and saturation rules on light and shadow, but there is no rules in changing hues from light and shadow, is there any rules I can fall on to?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfAZt3O0sLY

For example, the clementine that showed here transition from orange hue on the highlights to red orange hue on shadows. Is there any hues lights and shadows tend to gravitate towards?

Also, I fully understand that skin has undertones, but on which part of the body does have yellow, red and blue/purple undertones? Also, as a digital artist, do I just put monochromatic skin tones first then just add undertones later?

I really need a flowchart in digital painting...

have hardly spent anytime drawing past few months, did this for the Steam Summer Sale though, spend bout an hour on it. I need to focus on finishing my story and finding a new job, then I want to come back and work on drawing somemore.

lol, I am not an expert, especially if this is about realism, so don't take my word as that, but when it comes to hues turning darker, for me personally, I like shifting the tone towards purple as a default. That means if it's orange, it goes redder and darker. This adds interest and colour balance to the overall image. However it really depends on the lighting of the environment itself, so you can potentially shift toward any kind of colour you want for a shadow.
I think I choose purples for my shadows because the colour of my "light" tends to be yellowish, so I choose the complement to be the opposing shadow.
There's a whole stylization area for this too, as some artists will tend to desaturate for shadows, while other saturate. I think it's up to you on what you find looks good.

For the face, skin undertones tend to be blue-greyish around the chin (mostly for men, due to beard hair follicles), reddish/pink for the nose and cheeks (where most blood flows) and yellowish for the forehead (less blood, just more skin and bone). Lots of artists also like giving finger tips/palms, toes, knees, and other bendy joints a reddish blush to them because of the blood flow thing.. and also for appeal.

As for the colouring, that's up to you. I think a lot of artists do bw/values first and then add colour (usually the more technical artists if I think about it), or have flat monochrome blobs and shape it after and then add shades on top, and some directly get to colouring the undertones.

Thanks man. So basically:

Yellow Undertones on fatty/skin only areas
Red Undertones on blood vessels and joints
Blue Undertones on hairy areas

And who light's color, take the complement for shadows.

Just a question though, what kind of layer effects to use when painting the undertones? Do I use multiply or just lower the opacity?

I'm using Corel Painter BTW

For the layer effect, it's up to you! Just experiment to see what you like. "Overlay" will make it look more saturated, and "color" will just shift the colour, while "multiply" will darken the area.
I thinks some people will just take a low opacity airbrush and brush over those areas with the tone and either merge the layer or just on the same layer as the skin. This way it becomes more a part of the entire image.

It's been a while since I've posted anything in here but I have been lurking and drawing people in my commute and did a bunch of abstract acrylic paintings for my Advanced Painting class semester. You guys are all beasts in here! It's damn near intimidating. At Alcotholic's encouragement I'm going to post stuff in here more often again since we're all here to support each other in the end of the day.

I'll begin the most recent one that I did last night in Photoshop. Was trying to use some perspective since I suck at that. Let my hand make stuff and choose colors on the fly:

EDIT: Also did an abstract landscape digital painting last month. Played around with a bunch of brushes in Photoshop:

Yeah!!!!
Good to see you post stuff here!

I like your experimentation with colors. Another good way to try colors is to use preselected color palettes.

OT, but what's the latest hotness when it comes to art streaming sites? JTV has steadily been steadily going down the drain ever since those Youtube buyout rumors surfaced. I can't even log in to their IRC servers anymore, and it's been this way for at least a month.

I'd really like to see more colour work from you if this is what it entails. Also thanks.

Uh, I currently use Picarto which is probably single handedly the most ugly site I ever promote. It also has a certain immaturity attached to it with the crowd that frequents and the kind of artists up there now it I think, but it does what it does -very- well. It's not bloated, and the video quality is pretty good. It's a bit difficult getting some of your old followers to switch over because its so ghastly looking, but I find it saves me a headache (I use to use Livestream, which has just gotten worse overtime as well and I'm not fond of their new set up). It's worth a shot, but I wouldn't say it's the creme de la creme. So long as your people are finding you through personal links, I don't think it would be too hard for them to get use to. However if anyone has anything better than that, I'd like to know too.

Currently working on this. This picture has been due over a year now and I'm just now starting it. I feel awful. It's also my first time trying to use carbon pencils and the learning curve is steep.

liamwipamswz.jpg

Another one of those pictures where I wish I had way more time to make it look actually good haha. 8-10 hour so far. My people always look so ridiculously bored lol....

Is this nsfw? If it needs taking down, will do.

.

Just gave Picarto a shot with terrible results. I use Open Broadcaster Software stream to Justin.tv at 720p with few problems. Picarto, on the other hand, drops frames like nobody's business. I lowered everything I could think of (bitrate, framerate, resolution, sound quality) and the problem persists. It'd be nice if they had a tech support form, but alas...

Alright, I figured out the problem. On JTV I can broadcast at around 2000 kb/s -- not insane by any means. With Picarto, anything above 500 kb/s drops crazy amounts of frames. I'd actually tested a lowered broadcast rate earlier earlier but didn't realize just how low I had to go. The image quality's taken a major hit as a result.

Hmm I see, I knew that Picarto had a habit in dropping frame rate, but I've only ever had marginal results, as most people said the video quality is fine. For me, the quality was quite a large boost, since with livestream the highest upload speed I could do was like 400 something kb (as it would try to stream it constantly at that, but the video quality was garbage). On top of that, Livestream would constantly just black out, the chat would break, and when the video skipped the screen would blank on and off constatnly. Doesn't help that my upload speed is balls too so I can't really upload anything more than 1000kb. Ah well, hope you find something that works for you bro. Perhaps I should try Jtv if it's better than picarto hah!

Finished this thing
About 12 - 14 hours total. I thought I'd leave it more on the sketchy side since the carbon pencil looks quite rough. Was fun though, wish I could have fleshed it out properly.

Been a while since I posted anything in here, but I've still been following.

It dawned on me the other day while watching drawing videos from CtrlPaint that I've been taking drawing a bit too lightly for where I'm going in the future. I've been drawing since I was three, but I didn't spend much time with the fundamentals and it's starting to bite me. I've definitely improved since I first posted here last year, and I love being able to draw digitally now, but today I'm making it a personal commitment to put in at least half an hour a day to learn and improve upon my fundamentals. Below is a schedule I threw together, and if anyone is in the same boat, they're welcome to use it or modify it for themselves. I'll probably make a fancy image for it later. Anyway:

MONDAY: Form and Structure | Traditional or Digital
Perhaps the most important, this will focus on simplifying the human body and developing a technique to apply these fundamentals to virtually anything.
  • 60 second gesture sketches
  • Deconstructing and simplifying the body - head, hands, feet, and more
  • Deconstructing and simplifying inanimate objects
  • Hair styles/fur
  • Movement and posture

TUESDAY: Perspective | Traditional or Digital
This is also very important and at times daunting. Will do various studies on characters, objects and environments.
  • 1-point, 2-point and 3-point studies of characters and environments
  • Foreshortening
  • Changing perspective of a character
  • Viewing characters and objects from different camera angles

WEDNESDAY: Clothing, Surfaces, Lighting and Shadows | Traditional or Digital
This will help with light sources and how they affect various kinds of surfaces.
  • One or more light sources
  • Clothing studies
  • Values
  • Developing color schemes (mono, analogous, complimentary, etc.)
  • Color studies/mood boards
  • Textured surfaces (weather, rust, reflections, etc.)

THURSDAY: Scenery - Natural | Traditional or Digital
Trees, rocks, water, planets, glaciers; if it's in the natural world, it'll be included here.
  • Simplifying objects
  • Fauna study
  • Clouds
  • Physics (water, fire, electricity, and more)
  • Same object, different geographic location (beach, volcano, glacier, forest, desert, space, and more)

FRIDAY: Scenery - Utility | Traditional or Digital
The opposite of the above. If it's man-made, it ends up here.
  • Various kinds of buildings
  • Creating cityscapes
  • Physics (vehicle crashes, sparks, broken glass, and more)
  • Prop study (streetlight, trashcan, beds, pots, chairs, and more)

SATURDAY: Environment Speedpaint | Digital
I will allot various amounts of time to get an environment done. Doesn't matter what it is but it should combine some of the objects I studied for that particular week.

Sunday Character Speedpaint | Digital
Same as the above. I will look at some of the gestures and clothing I studied and apply the lighting tricks and perspective angles to make an interesting character painting..

I think I can do it. I mean, I have to, because otherwise I'm going to need to find a new passion! I have a bunch of empty sketch books lying around too. I may not be able to post it here every day, but I'm going to try to be as consistent as possible, even if it looks like crap

This is a really good idea. I may do the same myself.

hi drawing gaf, i'm in a wee pickle trying to spruce up a ppt with a little drawing of one of these cockatoos i work with - i'm having real trouble getting proportions on the beak and whenever i try to add a few neck feather ruffles it looks pretty weird. only having access to a trackpad and having severe artistic limitations also doesn't help i guess. would anyone be willing to give this a crack, if you can see the kinda thing i'm getting at?

screenshot2014-07-0807sk2x.png

You should have someone make that so I can buy it.

Someone already makes it. I used a reference. They have a version for guys, too, although these things strike me as kind of unisex.

If you're having trouble with proportions use a grid. First, draw a grid over the original image. The number of cells you use is up to you. Just don't go apeshit or anything. Next, duplicate the grid as best you can on your canvas. You should have something that looks like this:

HGuxNVd.png

Use the grid to place your subjects' features. Don't worry about being too exacting. You're painting, not taking a picture. Smooshing the details a bit is okay.

I'm just getting back into drawing after taking many, MANY years off.

I have a daughter who has taken an interest in art, so she draws when she see Dad draw. I guess it inspires her....

Anyway, here's one I just finished tonight. Not sure how much time is involved, but I can't imagine any more than 6-7 hours. It's just a relaxing thing to me.....

I finally started taking a few commissions so now I have more art to show lol..

Sketch commissions! Each taking 30min - 1hr ideally..

OC hero called Lone Wolf

OC villain called The Critic

Oh I forgot to put this up; this is what I was procrastinating for months:

Yeah! You're getting better and I think faster every time! No pressure art is usually the best kind. :)

Aww thanks Prax.
I don't think I'm getting faster but I got to remind myself not to spend too much time on stuff.
I get bogged down with one little detail that might take hours for me to do and just not look good on paper so to speak. I need to start doing timed drawings or something to keep a good pace.

A piece I inked recently, wanting to get a few more down so I can go into a marker coma.

Also received a cintiq this weekend from an awesome friend! Did a 90 minute sketch only to realize I gave her quasimodo eye well after I uploaded the piece. Still need to upload the fixed version (^o^)

haven't done much drawing in a while, been needing to reinstall my tablet drivers onto my newer PC, but have been putting it off cause I have my optical drive unplugged so I can use my SSD.

At anyrate hopped on my other PC to doddle some stuff. (did the first two about 6hrs before the third picture)

Stupid doodle for a D&D character, was feeling lazy barrowed from one of my other doodles and such. About 2hrs, just using a mouse.

Another D&D character, drew inspiration from Dota's Juggernaut and DA's Varric.

Just did this, about 4-5hrs. Used a reference for this
