I might have voted for VVVVVV as my goatie, either that or SMG2.

Looks like there was 3 of us who chose it. Before I changed my vote, I was gonna go with Joe Danger which would have made me the only one, I think.

Played the ME2 demo a few months ago and I couldn't believe how boring it was. I watched a lot of the screens and videos of ME and ME2 before then and I figured the games were likely great, but that wasn't the case.

This has been said a thousand times, but demos for RPG's never sell a product

(que people saying ME2 isn't an RPG)

Also, it helps if you carry your save over from the 1st game as there is a connection you have to your character that you crafted. THAT is the RPG element that holds ME2 as much an RPG as the first game, if not more. I feel a stronger connection to my Shepard than I ever did to any Elder Scrolls character I've made.

Holy shit, great list and excellent work!

This is why I dig GAF's GOTY awards, I see games that flew under my radar when we get to the massive breakdown of all mentioned.

Seraphis Cain

bad gameplay lol
So I can only assume that Fable III's place on the list means that nobody gives a damn about the series anymore, right? :lol

Seriously though, ouch. Talk about a fall from grace. Though I suppose it was pretty obvious from the beginning that Microsoft didn't even give a damn about it, with how little advertising it got.

another perspective.. of the main top 25 games, there are....

  • 16 available on Xbox360 (3 exclusives) (18.75% of top-25 360 titles were 360-exclusive)
  • 15 available on PS3 (including ME2, come on, it's less than 2 weeks) (3 exclusives) (20% of top-25 PS3 titles were PS3-exclusive)
  • 8 available on PC (2 exclusives) (25% of top-25 PC titles were PC-exclusive)
  • 2 available on Wii (2 exclusives) (100% of top-25 Wii titles were Wii-exclusive)
  • 1 available on PSP (1 exclusive) (100% of top-25 PSP titles were PSP-exclusive)
  • 1 available on NDS (1 exclusive) (100% of top-25 DS titles were DS-exclusive)
There seems to be a negative correlation between number of titles in the top 25 and percent of titles that are exclusives...

The more I think about it, the more I'm surprised GT5 did as well as it did. It was dismissed by many outside of the GT5 official threads.

That, and it was a really bad game. It's still too high @ 80, I think it belongs somewhere between 250 and 300.

Having played the entire top 10 for once, the only one I am mystified by is Bayonetta.

I also think the DMC games are unfun shitpiles though, so take my opinion for what it's worth. :lol

I think 2011's GOTY list is going to be much more divisive. Skyrim, Gears 3, LBP2, Uncharted 3, The Old Republic, Battlefield 3, Portal 2, Dragon Age 2, Mass Effect 3, Deux Ex, Dead Space 2, Rage, Skyward Sword.... wow.

Quite a few of those games have rabid, RABID fanbases. I can see Skyrim losing out to some "by the numbers" game like Uncharted 3, and GAF going apeshit.

Well an exclusive generally means that fewer people have the opportunity to play it, and thus you'd assume it would get fewer votes.

But it's really just that Wii, DS and PSP games are more likely to be exclusive than a game on console or PC.

Fable 3 was an unapologetic shitpile. It was a triumph of horrendous game design. I'm speaking as someone who had the two previous games high up on GOTY lists.

Total, total disappointment. I'm not sure I've been more disappointed with any game this generation.

Seraphis Cain

I just realized that I currently own 5 of the top 25 games, and have also owned two others in the top 25 at some point over the year. I have statistically awesome taste. :lol

Well, it is a Bethesda game. :lol

Or maybe I'm just pissed at New Vegas for freezing on me so often.

New Vegas was in far, far worse shape than any Bethesda game has been at launch going back to Daggerfall. Still, the game rated relatively high and reviewed well.

If Bethesda releases a relatively tuned up experience in Skyrim without gamebreaking bugs, it MIGHT pull it off. The Elder Scrolls games are a bit hardcore for the mainstream, but this is GAF. If a more populist title like Uncharted 3 or Gears 3 wins the next GAF GOTY, I will be disappointed.

Right there with you. It was like a shambling, heartless, brainless, zombie version of what I once loved. Biggest disappointment of 2010 for me, and absolutely so.

Seeing Final Fantasy XIII higher than Nier is just...
a3hw7n.jpg

At least it made the the top 25. :) I was also hoping that Donkey Kong Country Returns would beat Super Mario Galaxy 2. Oh well.

daxter01

8/8/2010 Blackace was here
Mass Effect 2 Goty ,Heavy Rain at 6 place and no Amnesia in top 20 :( I must say this year gaf Goty awards sucks

I loved them both, had them #1 and #2 overall on my list. I just liked the gameplay in FFXIII more. I agree though, really glad Nier made the top 25 as well.

254. Trinity Universe 2

Well, at least I wasn't alone here.:lol

I just wrote a script that tells you the top 5 GotY lists that were most similar to yours (or to anyone's really, the starting user name is a parameter). The numbers in parentheses are a similarity rating (higher = more similar).

As a side effect it also tells you how much of a conformist you are (higher total similarity score = higher conformance to the GAF consensus).

Remember that I just now wrote this, and the design of the similarity measure is completely ad-hoc "because it seemed like a good idea". It's all in good fun.

Here's the script + data file:

Shocked that Battlefield: Bad Company 2, Lara Croft, Vanquish are so low and even more shocked that God of War III and Heavy Rain are anywhere near the top 10, let alone in it.

I agree, but clearly, the people have spoken. :lol

Thanks for all the work put into this! Glad to see ME2 beat out RDR, definitely had a much better time with it.

Also REALLY happy to see Nier squeak in.

Great list, although I'd place Battlefield higher. Shocked at Heavy Rain entering Top 10. I personally liked it, but it seemed that it wasn't quite warmly accepted at GAF.

At least Super Meat Boy made top ten, and not that other artsy-fuckshit sacred cow LIMBO.
