NeoGAF Games of the Year 2016 Awards

If both Divinity 2 and Torment turn out perfectly it could be a fantastic year, but even in such an ideal scenario I still think it would be missing variety compared to 2014.
I mean, we're already looking at Horizon, Nier, Nioh, Zelda, Gravity Rush, Mass Effect, Persona, Yakuza, Red Dead, Mario, Resident Evil, God of War, Gran Turismo, etc., which all have the potential to make a lot of top 10 lists for 2017 (which I guess is true of any unreleased game, tbh). It looks quite varied with entries that could be the high water mark for their given franchise.

Checked out my recommendations list. I'm actually really impressed. Seems like a good range of games which is a mix of stuff I already have an eye on, and stuff which I think I will like.

2. [XB1][PS4][PC] The Witness (Puzzle) = 10 points, 1 honorable mention
3. [PS4] The Last Guardian (Adventure) = 6 points
4. [PS4] Uncharted 4: A Thief's End (Adventure) = 6 points
5. [XB1][PS4] Dark Souls III (RPG) = 6 points

Yeah, 2014 had quality and quantity. I'm still catching up on 2014 rpgs.

We were talking about PC RPGs.

LMAO UNCHARTED 4 WON

The Official NeoGAF UC4 Hate Group (ONUG) is coming guys, watch out!

It is deserved though. By far the best game in the series, especially gameplay-wise. My 2nd favorite of the year, only behind The Last Guardian.

Congrats to the winners! Only two of my picks in the Top 10 though, bad taste GAF =P

This actually just came up in the voting thread, surprised to see Mankind Divided categorized as a shooter. There's so many ways to play besides shooting, melee takedowns, avoidance through hidden paths and dialogue. Fallout 4 and Dark Souls considered as RPG, rather than shooter and action game. What is the reasoning for having Deus Ex as a first-person shooter? Not a big deal by any means, but very curious about this.

I feel it doesn't do the game justice when lumped together with likes of Doom and Titanfall. Which are ofcourse great games in the genre.

what a dreadfully boring list/year

I didn't participate because I haven't played much in 2016, but looking at these games I kinda understand why now
There were 300+ games nominated. Even if the popular choices aren't your cup of tea, there were plenty of good games released.

I don't think anything I voted for hit the top 30, but it was still a great year for me.

You don't have to personally think Uncharted 4 is the GOTY to acknowledge that the majority of players and critics think it is. Blaming "SonyGAF" is objectively wrong and, frankly, super fucking immature.

RE4 wasn't eligible for the main list, but we do make re-releases eligible for the genre and platform lists. If nothing else I guess it was a bad year for horror, or (more likely) the genre really isn't that popular.
I think it's a bit of both. It's a somewhat niche genre, but we've gotten spoiled with Alien Isolation, Soma, Evil Within, ZombiU, Until Dawn, P.T. and others these past few years. And even games like Bloodborne and Last of Us, which aren't strictly horror games but at least cross over into that territory heavily. We were on a really good run, and 2016 was pretty dry by comparison.

RE7 will save us all this year, though. I have faith.

Boring number 1.

The game was good, and the story was great, but I feel there were far better games than that. Games like Hitman or Dark Souls 3. Even Harvest Valley.

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End - 141

The Critics' Picks - 85

The Readers' Picks - 56

Overwatch - 91

The Critics' Picks - 82

The Readers' Picks - 9

Looks like GAF agreed with most other audiences.

Naughty Dog has got 3 GOTY's from GAF. Uncharted is the only series to have 2 GOTY awards from GAF.

And damn, GAF's love for Bloodborne is unparalleled, as it should be <3
Bloodborne 2 would crash GAF.

I don't blindly love Naughty Dog, I thought Uncharted 3 was a bad game. Uncharted 4 is still my GOTY. Why is it so hard for people to understand that different opinions exist?
Of course i know that different opinions exist, as i said in my post this is just my opinion too. Or it seems you are the one who can't tolerate different opinions?
So anyone who loved ND is blind? GTFO with this shit, the press also gave UC4 the most GOTY awards, your opinion is not fact.
I didn't said that, it's just you jumping on conclusions. And you can fuck off with your shit too mate, since i said in first sentence of my post that it's just my opinion. Speaking about salt...

God no. It was incredibly varied with quality games in tons of genres.

Yep, anyone who says shit year imo needs to reevaluate why they even bother gaming.

You said people BLINDLY love ND, that's childish and BS. You cannot hide behind "It's my Opinion", some opinions are quite frankly stupid. It is possible to have an opinion without insulting a bunch of people as being blind.

I can believe it, especially given that game you don't know the proper name of.

2009, 2012, 2013, 2015, and 2016 were Playstation exclusives, damn.

Add Ni No Kuni II and DQXI just in case they get released! :D

I would've liked to see literally anything at #1 besides Uncharted, but at least Doom, Overwatch, and Hitman got high marks!

The affinity thing is really cool!

Also, I need to track down the 5 other people that voted for Seraph. What an overlooked game.

I hoped that The Witness would be higher since it had quite a lot of number one spots. But for a game in a less popular genre, it's still a great result and achievement.

Never understood the appeal of Uncharted 4 though. And i'm saying this as a huge fan of the franchise (especially 1 and 2). That game did nothing for me other than the fancy visuals.

Haha... well then. Hey man, we don't have time to check everything out in little detail XD We had 540+ games to check!
Anyway, it's fixed on the spreadsheet, if we run the data again it will be updated.

Any chance to consider Xanadu Next a new release instead of re-release? It's the first time the PC game got a WW release. The N-Gage version got WW release but is practically a different game with different story and all that from the PC game, just with the same name.

Good results. Only two things:

1. I wish that Titanfall 2 were a smidge higher,
2. Clearly, not enough people played Shadow Tactics.

Fire Emblem was #20, that should give an idea of how good of a year this was. It was stacked from January with The Witness to December with Last Guardian.

The N-Gage version is also originally a downport of the PC game to begin with!

Portal 2 looks weird being that high in that list, sometimes it feels like GAF forgot about it.

I feel surprise and strangely gratified that Overwatch wasn't #1. I guess I'm just sick of hearing about it. Also surprised to see Uncharted actually win since my impression of it is just another competent entry in the series.

Uncharted 4 winning proves that it is indeed the MGS4 of this gen

I'm looking forward to the voting redo in 4 years where Uncharted 4 wins again

I have zero issues with UC4 winning. It's also probably worth noting though that it is a darling to the "core" gamer. Many of the people playing say Overwatch on PC will never step foot in a forum like this and many don't even live in the West.

But hey UC4 was in my top 5 of the year and was a great game.

Holy shit, I just checked back and The Last of Us won by over a thousand points... Shows how close this year was in terms of votes being spread out.

Recommendations for me. Maybe I'll play Doom one day.
I still haven't touched the first Dishonored, not really super into first person stealth, but maybe some day.
