NeoGAF Voted: Most Anticipated Games of 2016

It's one of my most anticipated titles, but I'm also a little apprehensive. I think it will be fun with generally very good core gameplay, but I fear the story and characters may lack, and it might be a bit typically open world repetitive with too many collectathon type missions.

I have no worries about the story and characters after the people they brought in to write it. Having the New Vegas guy doing it gives me confidence. Also GG is always awesome at game mechanics. So I think this one will turn out excellent.

Could not have said it better, thnx!

Firewatch in the Top 20 is fuckin rad. Now you all have to put your money where your mouth is and buy it on release.

I'm definitely buying it (and it wasn't in my top 10). With all of the large open world games, a tight story driven game with a different visual style really stands out.

I know nothing about Mass Effect and only seen the teaser. I am very excited about it since Mass Effect was such an ambitious and refreshing new sci fi. I hope they go nuts with Andromeda.

Personally, Battlefield 5 tops the list. As for the most game that makes me giddy and most anticipated to date, it is Cyberpunk 2077- though not even a release year window is known, AFAIK.

Regardless, as a soul PS4 gamer this gen, I'm glad to see a number of Sony titles up there.

Gears 4 not even in the top 25. A damn shame!

I'm really looking forward to the new Mass Effect out of everything in the top 10. Hopefully I enjoy it, because the Mako stuff in the original was the worst part.

Based on what? The game itself, or the release date?

Regarding release date, as of right now, it's due 2016. Not much we can do, but hope it comes out, and deal with it if it gets delayed.

Regarding the game's quality, well, you can say the same thing about any new IP.

Why should anyone be less concerned about games like Scalebound, Quantum Break, and especially Recore?

It's Platinum, and Kamiya to be more precise. Guy is probably the best game director alive right now, perhaps only surpassed by Miayzaki. Inspires more faith than GG's track record in my opinion. But Scalebound's a 2017 game now.

I love the concept of Horizon, I'm just afraid it becomes another bloated open world slog. Prove me wrong, Guerrilla.

It's fair to be apprehensive to an extent, but at the same time, I don't really let developer track record colour the perception of any new game too much.

I mean, DONTNOD's track record before Life is Strange is the exceedingly mediocre Remember Me, but in 2015 they put out what is imo, a top 20 game in a very competitive 2016 lineup. Or what did Supermassive make before Until Dawn? Dr.Who, with a metacritic of 39.

On the other side of the court, we had devs like Treyach whose campaign kinda underdelivered, despite a really good campaign from their last 2 games.

For me, what GG showed of that short snippet shows me they've at least gotten the core idea behind the combat and encounters "right." The RPG-ness of it is still a lot of words without any visuals or footage to back it up, but it's not like the E3 showcase wasn't impressive.

Always healthy to have some scepticism, really hope its good because I think GG are competent just havent been able to craft a great story even though KZ has great lore (doesnt help they keep making games about the boring ISA)

I just hope GG focus primarily on the combat before everything else, and then tailor the narrative and open world design around it. I haven't played DD:A, but the gameplay looks top notch. I hope they take inspirations from the right games.

My fear is that it turns out like a Ubi #26 open world game.

We've got a mod here who refuses to use the quote tags when quoting somebody(?!). I think we can let slide somebody who likes writing their name at the end of every post.

Nothing but sincere curiosity. Truly. I've just never seen someone do it, and it's quite interesting, though I don't know why. Maybe it's just the reminder a person is behind the comments.

@ Shinobi:

Thanks for putting this together buddy!

lol @ anticipating The Last Guardian.

Terrible first reply.

Anyway, it's a solid top 25 on the whole, and if most of those come out it should be another legendary year. Gravity Rush 2 is my most wanted, and I can't remember what my #2 was (Horizon, perhaps), but Uncharted 4 was very high as well.

Going by NeoGAF stats* it was the most impressive E3 demo in the last 3 years.
* Only GAF posters that participate in E3 voting threads are counted.

I also think it's fine to not anticipate anything. Always wait for the final game, borrow it and then buy it when you like it.

No need to feign stupid why some people seemingly liked something when there are thousands of posts around something though.

No Man's Sky will be the Peter Molyneux game of this year, narrowly beating Horizon and TLG for most disappointing PS4 exclusive of the year

Persona 5 and No Man's Sky are the only top 10 games that interest me, but the overall list is solid. Slightly surprised by the low showing of ReCore, Cuphead, and Scalebound (2017 now, but still)

well it could do exactly what is promises,(endless exploration), but that in itself doesn't mean it will be great.

Solid list. Certainly shows that as an XB1 owner I'm in the minority on here!

In all seriousness though - there's no doubt that the PS4 has some crackers coming out this year - hope the XB1 can bring out at least a couple too...

Yes. Love the appreciation for these quiet, first-person adventures (Ethan Carter, Gone to Rapture, Edith Finch, etc. etc.) Hope this subgenre flourishes.

Also interesting how The Witness scored lower on the list at #30.

It's always interesting to see how my list compares to Gaf. Not a single game I listed is in the Gaf top 5, though going back I'd maybe add Horizon to my honorable mention list. Plus, other then maybe hearing the titles before, I really have no idea about Zero Time Dilemma or Fire Emblem Fates; so I'm surprised to see those so high.

It's really interesting to see the ranking of the many indie games releasing this year, some are much higher then I would've guess (Firewatch), and others much lower (Hellblade. Tacoma)

Edit: Also noticed from the list, that at least from a games perspective, a lack of (high ranking) VR titles. It will be interesting to see the adoption rate, without any "system seller" anticipated titles.

I take it that you don't own a PS4 then? Or probably never owned a PS3. But then again, there are some exclusive Xbox One games that I anticipate and I don't own one.

Shinobi fantastic work but why not start from 20 to 1? That lack of anticipation build-up L.

EDIT: I'm surprised DK3 is so far up. Considering these types of games from FROM looks to be annualized, surprised there is such a huge interest in the games still. :\

Persona 5 is that one rare game that with each trailer it's looking better and better, shattering expectations everytime. So no wonder it climb the list every year. Also top 3 is Sony exclusive kinda crazy.

I'm curious how GotY 2014 happened then.

Shouldn't be hard to see if you look at both years' lineup.
Not saying only lack of great exclusives on one platform, but there was also a lot of vote dilution while it was easy to choose if you owned a wiiu.

I'm a little surprised that Gears 4 is so low, beneath comparatively lower-profile PS4 games like Gravity Rush 2 and Ni-oh. The Coalition have absolutely everything to prove with that game.

Neogafs third annual Sony exclusive anticipation thread.

Yeah, people are obviously listing games because they are Sony exclusives and not because they either look like quality games, or are being developed by studios with strong track records.

Don't be salty because Legend of Dragoon 2 isn't on the list.

I really LOD2 existed.

No Man's Sky will be divisive purely because people I've hyped it up the arsehole already.

You'll have the party who are content with exploring the galaxy and steadily making their way to the centre of the galaxy and then the party whose imagination/expectations got the better of them and are disappointed that the game's most imaginative and exciting moments aren't fed to them on a platter and will therefore turn on the game, claiming it's "disappointing".

I was actually very shocked to not see Gear's in the top 25. How does this happen? I guess Xbox One owners are more excited for the new IP? Or GeoW Judgement left a bad taste? Gears was the series that really brought my into last gen so I hope that The Coalition kills it because I want to get back into the series.

Let's compare my list to the total:

1. Zelda -> 4

2. Fire Emblem Fates -> 16

3. Persona 5 -> 2

4. Zero Time Dilemma -> 17

5. Scalebound -> 19

6. Nier: Automata -> 12

7. Genei Ibunroku X FE -> 41

8. Star Fox Zero -> 31

9. Dragon Quest VII -> 35

10. Mass Effect: Andromeda -> 6

A relatively mainstream list, looks like.

Correct. My preference for games falls closer to the Xbox side. I hold nothing against games on other systems, it's just that those exclusive games don't enter my thoughts as often. Horizion, NMS, and Hellblade are more most anticipated PS4 games this year.

It could also be pointed out that every game on my most anticipated list, besides Scalebound, is from a western developer. Or that every game I listed is set in some form of Sci-Fi, fantasy, or otherwise "unrealistic" environment. If you were to look at my past most anticipated or goty lists, that trend would exist there as well. Nothing against Japanese games, or games set in "current day / realistic" settings, I just like what I like.
