NEOGAF's Official Music Production Thread: calling all producers

its weird and it didnt show itself until i installed windows 7 as well. definately something to do with asio 4 all. i have no idea how to fix it, one solution is finding an audio card/interface that supports multi-client output/input.

It's the same problem I had. Could never find a fix for it, if there even is one. The only solution I know is to get yourself an audio interface.

top o' the mornin to ye!

well I played a gig on NYE (just a little houseparty with some friends) and discovered the old Mackie VLZ is breathing its last crackling breath, dropping channels left right and.. left again, fuck it.

Since I'd like to replace my soundcard, and potentially my controller also, I'm looking at the A&H Xone4D.

xone-4d.jpg

Maybe overkill, maybe just what the doctor ordered. Since i'd lose a kb by not taking my normal controller to gigs, i'm having visions of teaming it up with one of these:

For everyone who loves tutorials, here's a few (well more than a few actually) tutorials about synth programming, EQ'ing, and mixing, and all the stuff in between. Tutorials are done by D. Ramirez, not my favorite kind of electronic music, but the tutorials are really useful for beginners!

D. Ramirez Producing Tutorials

The tutorials are all done in Logic (AWESOME), but don't worry. The main ideas and techniques go for every DAW ofcourse.

So, one of my new years resolutions is to just make music, and by that I mean just MAKE it and not worry about it being good or bad, but just to expand my knowledge. I've sorta been doing that. Made this in two days. I know where the problems are in my mind, but I don't think I should fix them, because I know where they are and I just wanted to gain some knowledge. I wish I had another track by now, but school kicked in. :/ Here's number one, the one I was talking about. You can check the rest of my soundcloud out from there. Feedback please! http://soundcloud.com/dartastic/abunai-that-ish

Wow, thanks for all that. Not into trance all that much but i'm sure i'll learn a lot.

Those videos won't play for me. Is it the same tutorial he did for the Future Music CD? Ace guy btw, he gives up all his secrets.

I'm having trouble with Ableton Live 8.1.1

I'm using the ASIO4all audio driver, but I can't hear any sound from Ableton if ANY other program is open that plays media (i.e. Winamp, Quicktime, Youtube). BUT, if I close all of these programs, sound will play in Ableton again, but will NOT play sound for anything else.

It's an either "one or the other" dilemma. I tried switching back to the MME driver but the same problem arises.

It's frustrating, very very frustrating. I can't watch tutorials along side having Ableton open

Any help?

im at work right now so i cant test it, but it looks like this driver might be able to help?

Thx hover, must be the same set of videos. I'm keen to rewatch these when I get home from work. Love the way he blatantly rips the percussion loop from some track he liked, other producers usually try to hide that part of their work-flow.

When he talks about his 'ghost track' is he basically saying that's a track he is trying to emulate?

No, not really. I often put a ghost track channel myself in Logic too. The reason why is that sometimes it's hard to make choices about the arranging part of a track. By choosing a ghost track, you can instantly see how many bars every part of a track takes to build. Uh, hope this is clear enough. Also by having a ghost track channel, you can A/B your track with a track you like or which you think is really good. You could compare for instance volume levels and everything.

By the way, D. Ramirez is definitely NOT Trance music. No sir. No sir, not at all ;)

I'm really bad with electronic sub-genres but the site is called tranceaddict... I wouldn't know one way or another.

NAMM started today. Nothing huge so far.

Akai announced Synthstation 49, complete with an iPad dock.http://www.engadget.com/2011/01/13/akai-synthstation49-dock-giant-keyboard-combo-is-less-portable/

M-Audio have a new synth that also functions as an audio interface called Venom. http://www.gearjunkies.com/news_info.php?news_id=5985

That drum machine being made by both Dave Smith and Roger Linn is a reality, called the Tempest. As per usual with DSI gear, all of 5 people will be to afford the damn thing. http://www.gearjunkies.com/news_info.php?news_id=5984

Nothing so far on the DAW front, though Ableton Live 9 and Cubase 6 are rumored.

Korg are revealing something titled Kronos today, no idea what it is yet.

Nothing huge?!?

The Tempest is HUGE! Both DSI and Linn will be releasing a version, each with unique features. There's more on the CDM blog.
So is the Kronos - that thing has NINE synth engines in it, think of a successor to the M3 and you'll be close. Tempest will be around 2k and the Kronos probably around 4k. I'd post more info but I'm lazy :p

"As per usual with DSI gear, all of 5 people will be to afford the damn thing"

I dunno, a lot of DSI stuff is pretty affordable. The price for the Tempest is pretty wild though.

That's Cubase alright. I'm actually more interested in the Arturia Spark.

A little too expensive for me, but I'm definitely more interested in more shit leveraging the power and flexibility of software with the tactility of hardware.

I just can't get it up for DAW updates anymore.

well that explains why my mate isn't replying to messages till 5am.. lucky (hard working) bastard gets flown to the US for NAMM every year. Means I get all the good goss though :)

nearly bought cubase 5 a couple of weeks ago (i'm still on 3) but thankfully decided to hold out until I've re-enrolled in feb so I can get a student discount.

I don't particularly get excited about updates either but having got a new compy recently i feel it's time for new software too. Generally my motto is if it works, and sounds good, then it works and sounds good. When I met The Hacker in 2005 he was still using an Atari ST. I wouldn't be suprised if nothing's changed.

Love that drum machine. All my friends have elektron MD's and I'd like something different.

I don't know what it is about Cubase, put it puts me off so much. I've had Reason and Cubase, and although I liked Reason, I could never get into Cubase's GUI, and the workflow of Cubase, with all the windows. I can't stand the way how the MIDI tracks are handled in terms of GUI. But it's a great program if you look past all of this. I'm not trying to be a dick here, but it's just that Cubase annoys the hell out of me while I'm working with it.

I am so happy with Logic Studio. It's so clean, so incredible user friendly and so nice to work with. Here's a shot from my latest project, a Trance track.

Actually I'm kind of curious if Cubase 6 takes any serious steps forward on UI. Evidently it's being shown at NAMM

I'll try. Technically my computer is below the SW min spec, so I may not be able to really put it through its paces for a bit. I'm ordering my components in a few weeks.

It looks like there will be plenty to hit upon even before customizing patches though. Should be able to get a warm fuzzy even if the editor doesn't run.

Nobody? =( Anything constructive is useful! I know I need to edit it down in some places, but that's about it.

sounds alright man. only thing is the continual loopy vocal stutter fills the track up with a bit too much noise for me. i'd personally pull it out in a few more places, so you get more impact when it does come in. the brief part where it drops out, the track sounds more open in a pleasing way.

but simplicity is something i'm striving for. i've been working on this thing, just put it up:

i'd really appreciate some feedback and some downloads. i have a couple reels full of tunes that i am mastering off and on. i'll drop them here as they come out.

also if anyone is trying to collaborate let me know

thanks

Hell yeah!

My Acidlabs Miami (808 clone) just showed up in the mail.

And I also just won an ebay auction for a Oberheim DMX.

Also grabbed a Korg 55b from Craiglist.

Fat beats ahoy!

New orchestral. Got some very useful tips from Bear McCreary who was nice enough to listen to my work and offer some advice. This track is the product of that. This is one of my last projects on GarageBand as I'm switching to Logic next week. Tell me what you guys think.

Road to Nowhere

The Miami seems like an excellent clone of the 808 so far.

I've only messed around with it for a bit, but the kick, the cowbells and everything else sounds great to me.

And holy shit, this thing is small. Portable, very light...so far I'm very happy with it.

I never really looked at the acidlabs stuff too hard, but that price on the Bassline is pretty damned nice, considering how much actual 303s go for. Same with the Miami, seems like really nice kit.

AgentWhiskersX: It sounds really good. Really cool that you got Bear McCreary to check your stuff out, too.

This too. Liked Psychic Clunk better than Vendetta with Snuggler.

Is it that easy to make cool music or are there some gifted people in here?

I've just kind of started making electronic music next to being in a band, and have put it right here. 'Tripoli' is an electro track, 'Greetings From the East' is more of a mish mash of stuff. Put in a bassline via my iRig :p

holy shit the fabled 1.6 public beta update is out! no one probably cares except teknopathetic.

EDIT: MASCHINE WANKFEST I LOVE IT!

Greetings has a great momentum to it... really blowing me away. are those sitars? sampled?

i think very deeply about what i am doing, hopefully that doesn't mean that i am not gifted, lol. we should all form a super group and remix each others tracks again and again etc.

also my track Vendetta is about the Neogaf user Snuggler. he doesn't know though.

So I am pretty much just getting into the whole home studio ordeal and want to buy a synth so I can start making MIDI shit. Is there a go to synth to start out on that you guys would recommend?

Budget? Hardware/Software? Ideal sound (Deep house chords/pads, drum n bass basslines, trance anthems, etc)?

software. probably budget of around 300. as far as sound goes im not exactly sure yet

"software. probably budget of around 300. as far as sound goes im not exactly sure yet"

300$ gives you a lot of options.

Some of the most popular ones that don't have too wild of an interface would be: DCAM Synth Squad - 250$ (Technically 3 synths, but whatevs), Sylenth1 - 180~$, Massive - 200$, Predator - 180$, ACE - 80-90ish$, Korg Legacy Analog Edition (again, a bundle of synths, technically) - 200$ or 50$ for each individually.

Those are the more "universally praised" ones off the top of my head with fairly straight forward interfaces.

Try demos and pick the one you prefer. Alternatively, check out places like kvraudio.com for an even bigger list and try more demos.

Good list Teknopathetic but it's a bit dated now, those were the best soft-synths when I was shopping a few years back.

These days I'd recommend Trilian by Spectrasonics over most of those you listed except for probably Massive and the MS-20 as those are classics.

For $300 though I'd be considering hardware, something like the Dave Smith Mopho

http://www.analoguehaven.com/davesmithinstruments/mopho/

Or even a second hand Electribe or similar.
