NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Not articles, info like that is found on communities and forums, like Famicom World.

I user called Ikermel there has a site video game den which is pretty good. My plan with my site is to log info like that in a nicely indexed location too.

Thanks. I wasn't aware of VGD so now I have another good site to keep in mind. Yeah, wiki style index of all the cart/box style of each early game was what I was looking for. It would be neat to collect them all but I'm not sure I need three copies (in some cases - NES, pulse line, illustrated FC) of some games. Especially when we're talking about rather bland games like Golf or Baseball.

Just got given and awesome little bundle of games. Metroid, Snakes Revenge, Gun Smoke and Gradius. Brings me up to 50 NES titles. Need to get the NES Advantage for Gun Smoke

Awesome gift! I still need to pick up Gradius and Snakes Rvenge myself. Btw, passed 150 Nes/Famicom-games this month, not too bad.

I still need to try Shatterhand, Shadow of the Ninja and Power Blade.

A collector friend of mine just bought Shadow of the Ninja today while I was at the game store talking with my old coworkers. He paid about $49 for it. I told him good choice, but man, $50 bucks is somethin. The GCCX episode is a fun watch tho.

I absolutely love the game though, I picked it up back at a Woolworth in the bargain bin for $20, it was going to be that or River City Ransom, no regrets there.

Is the game pretty hard?=O Yeah it's climbing up in price now.

It waas one of the games I beat when I was around seven, and I remember thinking it was quite easy back then. Replaying it as an adult definitely changed my view, but its still quite beatable imo.

This thread inspired me to play through Monster Party again, and I'm glad I did! It was more clever than I remembered it being. The mechanics, though simple, have just enough depth (projectile deflecting, leveling up attacks) to keep things interesting. There is some really great sprite design, too (the witch looks fantastic), although much of it is awesomely weird. The star of the show is definitely the bizarre humor and inspired wackiness, though. It really seems as though the developers had fun making this game. I'm surprised they got away with so much blood and gore in an NES game, though. Watching Mark's skin melt off during the ending was a little odd.

I got help through the maze section and died many times on the last level (that dragon is brutal), but I was able to get through it eventually. I do so enjoy games that can be beat in one sitting!

I actually picked up Shadow of the Ninja from a guy at Something Awful this month (along with KickMaster and Solstice, for $72 and $3 S&H). Really wasn't expecting you to only get one life! I mean, okay, you get five continues, so it's more like five lives, but still, most games with continues tend to give you multiple lives per continue as well.

Kind of need to find a manual for it and Kickmaster, though, to figure out what all the collectibles and stuff are...

I'm an odd one who is getting better at older games now than when I was a kid.

1 life per continue? A 1 CC run sounds difficult now.

I'm continuing my trail on picking classic games that were featured on Game Center CX by purchasing two classic live challenge games: Mighty Bomb Jack and Quest of Ki. Seeing as I'm nowhere near as good as player as Arino (or is it his saint-like patience) I'm expecting trouble.

But both are definitely good games though. Extra points for Namco(t) for the classy, Megadrive-style snap cases.

Sweet man. 150 is no joke. I think I'll likely stop when I reach around 200. I say that now, it's hard to stop buying them. Definitely grab Gradius, it's awesome

LOL, oh no... I'm pretty sure half the charm of the show is that Arino is decidedly not good at videogames.

It's true, but he's definitely gotten better over the years. Although he still fails when you least expect it and succeeds the same way, but I guess it's again the charm of the show.

What? I just beat the game last week, but dont remember this at all.

I'm an odd one who is getting better at older games now than when I was a kid.

In general, i feel like I am too. The two exceptions are Shadow of the Ninja and Batman, which i beat as a kid, but cant really beat easily anymore. I was never able to beat Ninja Gaiden back then, and Mega Man 2 on normal felt though (while it is a joke now). So maybe its just my memory playing tricks with me?

I know, its really hard! I keep discovering awesome games I want to own and play all the time, so will probably go way beyond 200 before I am finished. So much cool Famicom-stuff that never got localized! Gradius is on my list for sure, and Ive played it alot back in the day, I just havent prioritized it yet.

Out of curiosity, does anyone else keep a list of games to get? I used to have a single one for multiple consoles, but after spending a few hours on Hardcore Gaming I had to make a separate one solely for the NES. lol

Maybe I'm just not digging deep enough or it's because of the history of the system/nature of the games/the 3rd Party monopoly Nintendo had, but I often feel like there are more hidden gems on the NES/Famicom than any other console at times.

I have one, but most often I end up buying games completely off the list when I see or hear about a game I didn't previously know about or get a good deal.

I'm using www.rfgeneration.com, it has a very complete database and a cool app to manage your lists. It tells me that I have 350 games, and want 458 more. I will never see the end of it.

[edit] lol, total games, I have only 10 famicom games ;)

Yeah, I try to take notes of the games I need to get in the future, but it keeps spiralling out of control and doesnt get updated as much as it should. As a result, I recently managed to buy a second copy of Conquest of the Crystal Palace after reading about it in this thread, not realizing my list wasnt updated with me getting it earlier this year.

Only for the Nes/Famicom? If so, wow!

Ninja Crusaders...yeah I like it more than NG. Fantastic game.

I've been trying to remember the name of this game for a while. The scorpion felt useless and I think the bird form could not attack. I found it brutal after a certain point and gave up.

It did not help that I was really down on the game, having just given back a PlayStation borrowed for two weeks in early 1997. SF Alpha 2, Tobal No. 1, Road Rash, Destruction Derby, Twisted Metal 2, Tomb Raider. My kid brain was not happy with the jarring "downgrade" and it took me a while to readjust. I think that was the most my faith in the NES was ever shaken.

I may have to revisit it with a clearer mind. It's probably still tough as hell.

I am the opposite with Batman...couldn't beat it years ago but managed to beat it this year, more than once even. Same with Ninja Gaiden, didn't get past Level 3 back then, now managed to beat it this year and did no death runs even.

Was watching an episode of GameCenter CX and saw them mention this Famicom game: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/America_Daitōryō_Senkyo

Now that I know this exists, I would totally pay money for someone to make a hack/remake/update of this game every four years. As bad as it probably is and ignoring the Trump Factor, it's probably more entertaining than the real thing. Player 2 is obviously Al Gore.

wow, this is amazing...any chance for a fan translation on it?

congrats here! hate to keep doing it but man, for years people would dump NES games on me/others like nothing, crazy how nice it is to see nowadays

I still need to try Shatterhand, Shadow of the Ninja and Power Blade.

dont know about Power Blade but the other 2 are fantastic. Shatterhand is now in the price range where im just gonna get an N8 board one day

true, but he keeps at it! and ive seen far, far worse on YT...he at least has pattern recognition sometimes

I finished restoring the Square Buttons Famicom

squarefami_6.jpg

It's quite interesting, I've proven that different Famicoms are different colours, it's not just bromine yellowing. This early run model is a slightly reddish cream colour.

Rarity. Hardly anyone bought the game, for obvious reasons. Fewer still kept the box in tact. The cart is worth about $60. So you're looking at about $1000 for mass produced paper products.
Also the fact to forms part of the original 'black box' set, of which a large number of people are trying to collect a complete set. That $1000 was likely spent to complete a collection.

thing is, its really a lot more fun just to run through stages than try to play them so to speak

oh and Sword is OP as fuck!

Is it just me. Or is Monster Party really hard?

Not as hard as I'd remembered it, but now we have the internet to minimize the obtuse nature of some of the aggravations:

- The fifth level is a maze you need to navigate (easier with a guide).
- There's also a boss who invites you to "watch my dance", who you can only beat by not attacking at all.
- The sixth level tricks you by giving you the key after the second boss but taking it AWAY after the third (so skip the third). Screwing up forces you to kill yourself and start the stage over, far as I know.
- The eighth level tricks you by hiding the first boss to the LEFT of your starting position. You can grind for life in an area near him, which is not really optional, since...
- There's a surprise last boss with very difficult to avoid attacks. Reaching this guy with enough life to beat him is probably the hardest part of the game (as it should be, to be fair).

Not an easy game, certainly much more difficult if flying blind, but nowhere near as hard as a lot of other NES games, especially when you get the hang of the mechanics and start chaining transformation pills dropped by enemies. Little gem, this one.

Yeah, I looked into doing that last fall and quickly decided "lol no." Between DKJr Math, Clu-Clu Land, and Stack-Up, that was a $1500 investment a year ago. Looks more like $2000 these days.

I'm on that path, but I'm also well aware that I'll never get the big fish mentioned above. I have lately been realizing how many of the rather expensive GAMES I could buy if I unloaded a bunch of my CIB items. I'd like to keep the manuals though...

I do get the impression the person who did the box art never actually played the game, though.

Monster_Party_Box.JPG

What the heck is this?

Creature from the Black Lagoon, Medusa, Dracula, Big Foot, Giger Alien, Little Shop of Horrors. The person who did the art knew exactly what was in the actual game and instructed to do the opposite in order to appeal to Americans.

Don't remember what, in particular?

The leveling up you mentioned.

Is it just me. Or is Monster Party really hard?

I thought it was pretty easy actually. Sure there are some hard stuff, like the Dragon boss in last stage, and some cryptic stuff like the boss you have to imitate (I had to ask about that here), but in general, it wasnt hard to get through, and I beat it in my first sitting just last week.
