NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

It's a shame that Jackal revival for Wii never came to pass, the original is a gem.

Never knew this was supposed to be a thing. Btw, the Konami Rebirth-games should totally be rerelased somehow instead of being stuck on a dying service, those were all awesome.

I own all of them... but it's one of the greatest crimes in gaming that they're stuck on WiiWare. And a port needs to happen, but we'll probably never have that happen because it's Konami.

Definitely agree. Too bad Konami is done with gaming :(

Yeah, I always kinda hoped for a physical collection. I managed to get some friends together this past Saturday and we all played through Contra ReBirth in Co-Op. It was pretty great. And Castlevania ReBirth is legit my favorite Classicvania.

Shame it'll never happen since, well... Konami.

ah thanks man! been stepping it up this year since i inherited a DJ buddy's collection, crossing off most of my major ones at the moment
Good shit, man. I just started my own, since I ended up inheriting my parents massive collection and turntable. I mean, most of it at the moment is old Motown stuff, but it's as good a start as any.

The leveling up you mentioned.

Ah. Well, as you progress from level to level your Bert transformation's projectile attack powers up. Eventually it fires two bolts that criss-cross in a wave pattern. The color of your sprite changes too, but the weird thing is it does for your Mark form also. So maybe your bat attack is getting stronger too, but since you're fighting new enemies of unknown strength in every stage any supposed changes in power seem arbitrary. At least in Bert form you can see the changes in your attack and bosses tended to go down much quicker.

I mean, it's not experience point-based or anything, but you definitely get stronger as the game progresses.

Also they have fucked up widescreen scaling, Like Mega Man 9. They look great with the Wii set to 4:3, but when set to 16/9 they have forced widescreen borders with lower resolution, which makes them hideous blurry messes. On the Wii U it's forced widescreen so they look like crap. I have to keep my Wii around just for them.

Yeah was hoping for the same, a disc-release, a ds-port. Anything! Instead we got nothing as usual :(

Ah yeah, now I understand what you mean. I think this is just based on the level, and not experience as you said, so didnt really count it as leveling up. But yeah, pretty cool feature for sure!

So, after having played through Monster Party, I decided to go through my NES games and find a few more Halloween-ish games, maybe for a marathon Friday night.

Here's what I came up with:

- BeetleJuice
- A Nightmare on Elm Street
- Friday the 13th
- Dr. Jeckyll and Mr. Hyde
- Fester's Quest
- Monster in my Pocket
- Ghosts & Goblins
- Gargoyle's Quest II
- Maniac Mansion
- Uninvited
- Ghoul School
- Castlevania
- Castlevania II
- Castlevania III

And for the Famicom:
- Getsu Fuuma Den
- Kid Dracula
- Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti

Any other suggestions?

Incidentally, I took pictures of these games to share but if I choose to include an image in my post my only option is to enter an image URL. Is that because I haven't made enough posts to upload pics or am I just missing something obvious?

^that's an awesome list, id say Sweet Home if you can...so good!

missed this, but yeah - this is one of my most-wanted collection discs, ugh
just toss those 2 & gradius rebirth, easy $

So the RetroUSB NES is coming next year, what do people think of it from what we know so far? Aside from the cost difference, would the Analogue be a better option?

The RetroUSB seems pretty cool.

Nah, all you can do is post the image url inbetween brackets here
. No actual uploading on gaf. That being said, that's a damn fine selection of stuff...maybe missing Sweet Home, but that's not something you can toss in a marathon. I guess that Frankenstein game by Bandai?

EDIT: Got my RGB modded NES back and running after a minor tech issue. So sharp, but now i'm trying to figure a pallet setting to stick with. Middle or up lol.

And I'm partial to the pic of the dude in the Islander jersey!

But back on topic... anyone play Crisis Force? Pretty damn good Konami vertical STG. A bit heavy on the slowdown in parts, but the graphics are attractive and the little environmental flourishes are neat - you have volcanoes exploding in the background, lasers firing on a city and destroying buildings, little bulldozers digging up the land. Surprised it never got a US release, the game came out in Japan in '91 when the NES was still an extremely viable platform in the US, and I can't imagine translation would have been too arduous.

Be sure to use Imgur. Several other hosting sites are banned. RIP golden frog
Honestly, I've come to loathe ImageShack lately. Might be useful for uploading images, but their redirect mischief makes it a pain in the ass to view full-size images hosted on there.

Well that was banned since they reuse urls for expired images and that resulted in some very nsfw stuff popping up in threads over time.
I thought that was tinypic?

Whoops forgot to add, if you want to post large images, but only want them to display full size when the user wants them to, post them with brackets. That way the site will display them within a quote box, and they wont be so big unless you click on em.

Crisis Force is AWESOME.

I was blown away with the juice they were able to squeeze out of a Famicom. The game is pretty solid, too.

Edit: Thanks for the tip, Teknoman!

I wanted to squeeze in a few Monster Party moments before the end of the month.

(Spoilered for length and, well, spoilers)

The entire ridiculous opening story:

Best part: "The beauty of the star made his eyes moist."

Here's the moment everyone remembers: THE CHANGE

The "Sorry, I'm dead" guy:

A sight gag typical of a lot of the sprite work:

The "Watch my dance" guys:

The "Which one" boss. It's actually a reasonably clever boss battle with faces blending into the background (only one of which is vulnerable), but the colors just clash so much that the atmosphere is surprisingly creepy and off-putting:

This guy can be brutal (Bonus: Post-battle cute witch):

congrats here! hate to keep doing it but man, for years people would dump NES games on me/others like nothing, crazy how nice it is to see nowadays

Cheers mate! Pretty awesome and rare to get handed free NES games these days. The guy that gave them to me is upgrading to boxed complete copies. That's a road I'm yet to go down....

Did just buy Conquest of the Crystal Palace after seeing it in this thread I believe. Cracking little game, awesome music

It's just basically because they felt like it.

There is no standard famicom cart apart from Nintendo produced ones (which sometimes 3rd parties used). You could make your own, and make it whatever shape or size you wanted. Sometimes It was for extra ROM chips to fit, sometimes the shell is mostly empty.

It was a combination of need for more space, and a marketing/branding thing. Even if the shell is empty you can pretend it's a 'huge' game because it was on a huge cart.

Konami, for example, used three carts:

'Konami' style with label that folds over onto the spine
Standard Nintendo with only front label
NES sized black carts with 'Konami' branding in the plastic.

Most of the special chip carts are in standard Konami small carts, but all the large carts use all the space, so in Konami's case the larger cases were necessary. Larange Point has like six chips inside, plus a battery.

Why are the ceilings in the sewer of Monster Party...blood vessels? Or are they nerve endings?

Also is it just me, or do you really have to power brute force your way through some of these boss fights?

Its not just you, I felt like I had to do this with a few as well, they are not always good enough designed to take the normal "learn pattern, be patient"-approach imo.

Yeah, there were aspects of the game that seemed a bit sloppy (like some unbalanced bosses and the fact that it seems to become harder to hit some enemies with your powered-up projectile), but unlike a lot of NES games, the design flaws are things that are possible to overcome with a reasonable degree of patience and skill.

A few of the good design choices that help make up for the bad:
- Infinite continues (big plus).
- Relatively short stages.
- Fixed enemies dropping power-ups (which will re-appear and can be exploited).
- Some of your life bar refills between stages.
- No time limits.

There are a lot of games with design flaws that are game-breaking. Whether Monster Party was spared this fate due to clever developers, blind luck, or a bit of both I don't know, but I'm certainly glad it ended up the way it did. Would be interesting to see what Bandai-Namco could do if they decided to make a modern remake.

After seeing what they did to Splatterhouse, Im not sure I would want this.

Finally started to get the hang of Gimmick!, at least enough so that I can make it through it each level decently. Level 5's boss is hard but the secret bomb items hidden nearby both give you extra farm-able lives and ammo. Level 6 isn't hard beyond getting a hang of the first miniboss's pattern (feels like fighting Hammer Bros) and dealing with springs (are easier than the ones in Mario IMO). I still have to beat Level 6's boss, but the sheer hecticness of the fight is a lot of fun and more manageable than it seems.

IDK I'm starting to feel ready to take on the Good Ending Challenge. lol

Just got a copy of Lickle for the Famicom. Seriously excellent game. There's a reason that it fetches such a premium. Played through the game on easy the first night. It was a challenge but totally manageable. I'm excited to play through it on normal.

Just pulled the trigger on Mega Man 5. My wallet hates me

Ouch! I gave up and got the Famicom-version on this one.

A pretty good game for sure, but it does not defend that price imo. Played through it on normal just last month. Need to do it on easy as well, since I read somewhere that the last boss is different.

I agree with the price point for sure. The price of collecting NES/SNES games has gotten absolutely banannas.
