Both NES Contras done without death and spread gun, can't wait to upload them. Also:

I don't understand how I survived that, lol.

Ffs man you're an absolute savage. I could play this for months on end and not be able to do a no death run, never mind not using the spread gun!

Anyway I uploaded me clocking Mega Man if anyone fancies taking a look. Proof that any buffoon can finish it! Timu. I'd imagine you might be able to finish it using just the Mega buster?

I think it's one of the tougher NES games I've finished. Haha dude a 1CC will be TOUGH. Youtube it if you take it on

It seems inconceivable coming off an initial playthrough, but I think that once you know the game well enough, a 1CC is very manageable; easier than you'd think given the game's three lives, no extends / 1ups, and partial health regen between stages. Almost all the enemies are predictable and easy to deal with if you play it safe, and there are no instant death pits - compare that to something like Castlevania or Ninja Gaiden, which can be scary to 1CC or 1LC. Of course that's not to say it's outright easy, either.

Nice job on your Contra clears, Timu!

These NES Contra games are not that overly hard.=p Plus they're short as hell, have easy ass bosses except for 1 per game, stage 6 is the only really difficult stage in both games as most stages range from having difficult moments to not being difficult at all. I had a much easier time with Super C even though I hated stage 6 in that game, lol. These are hard games as I had trouble with them, but not too extreme.

Oh and I used the laser, a lot, in both games. Honestly, I like the laser!

Oh cool, nice that you did a walkthrough on one of the hardest Mega Man games. And, well, that would take me years to do.=p

I would have to resort to farming to 1CC it...and I'm not a fan of farming!!!

Thanks as well.

Just beat Batman. That last level is a bit of a shit. Found it hard to figure out the last two bosses especially. Glad I beat it though. Always thought it was impossibly difficult

Congrats, it was definitely a tough game for me but I managed to it earlier this year as well. I'm debating how to do my 1CC of it though.

I used to be able to 1CC that back when I was 10....I'd probably fail miserably now. What setup do you have for capturing games Timu.

Also what's people views on the Sharp Twin NES systems, anything better about them (apart from having both cart and disk drives)?

PS. What's Farming for 1CC??

Startech Pexhdcap, retro consoles are captured in 640x480 and upscaled to 960x720 for getting 60fps on youtube.

In this case for Batman, just trying to farm for health and probably getting your weapons to max ammo while grinding in one spot for it.

Thought the PEXHDCAP was capable of capturing 240p?

1. Really nice job. I personally don't try for perfect runs but I may try a no spread gun game because the game needs extra challenge.

2. That gif perfectly demonstrates how the game has such great controls.

Game has aged so well.

I forget it looked this good, for the NES at least.

I know the Famicom version is superior, but this looks great too.

It is as it detects 240p perfectly and you can even capture in 240p...but it has a scan doubler to turn 240 into 480 flawlessly. The reason I capture in 640x480 because it upscales to 960x720 a lot better than 320x240.

Faxanadu is on hold at the moment, due to the fact that on Wednesday night, my wife had an emergency c-section and our twin boys were delievered. Still in the hospital at the moment, and the boys wonr be home until the end of December, but I should be able to get back to the game this week :)

A few days late on this, but wow, congrats!

Just finished clearing Street Fighter 2010. What an excellent game. Learning its unorthodox controls is fun as hell, your character's moveset is great (I love having to carefully aim your single strong aerial shots and the invincible backflip is really enjoyable to work with), there's a ton of great stage variety and interesting bosses (my personal favorite is definitely the giant sky-filling eyeball monster; keeping track of everything going on in that fight is great), and the game has great atmosphere for an NES action game - fantastic music, and I love the little bits of creepiness the music-cutting, potential insta-death teleporters add.

Definitely one of the NES's best games. I need to try for a no-death run; I came moderately close just now.
This sounds promising, never really gave this game a look. I'm a bit tired of replaying the usual suspects to death.

Those are awesome :)

Only games I can 1CC are the Mega Man series. I've managed to clear 2, 3, 9 and 10 without losing a life which isn't too shabby. Still can't do the original Mega Man though, the end boss rush messes me up (Guts and Fire mainly).

I don't think I'll ever clear Contra/Super C with 1 credit, but I have cleared them without using the Konami code so that's a small victory in itself!

Yeah - congratulations, Rory! That's really cool news.

^I've barely pulled off a 1CC of the first Metal Slug, at least. The last level is kind of vicious but up to that point the game's not really that crazy - harder than the NES Contras, but honestly on par with Contra 3's normal mode, for the most part. Metal Slug X is a real step up though; I haven't managed that one.

The original MS always seemed pretty fair to me. Hard, but I could see me pulling it off with a bit of practice. It still remains pretty much my favourite of the series bar maybe 2/X (I prefer 2's colour, but prefer X's music. Plus they fixed the slowdown for X)

I kind of lost my way after MS3 though. Never really cared for 4 bar the soundtrack. I did enjoy 5 more but it was obviously half complete (reading about the cut stuff in that game is rather fascinating) and I never put much time into the series after that.

MSX is one of my few 1CCs. They're doable.
Wait, what? That game is a monster, that's great to hear.

Timu is an absolute savage, confirmed. Great stuff man
When it comes to NES games like that I tend to practice for years, months, or in this case for the Contra games weeks, before attempting a 1CC or a no death run. Hilariously enough the NES Contra games were some of the easiest I no death all year.

Be warned that I will never be able to no death the following games listed below:

Battletoads
Castlevania 3
Ninja Gaiden 3
Journey to Silius
Ghosts N Goblins
The Adventures of Bayou Billy
Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2

I feel like CV3 and MAYBE Ninja Gaiden 3 could be doable. The rest though... GG

The last stage in Ninja Gaiden 3 requires perfection since you won't have much time left when finishing the stage...and I'm not perfect so it's out of the question to no death it for me. I could actually do a no death run on the Japanese version but not the US one.

I'm not surprised man. Those are some TOUGH games. I've only beaten Castlevania 3 out of all of them. Is Battletoads as hard as everyone makes out?

Yes. Fuck almost every stage after stage 3, lol.

This. I practiced an entire summer once, and made it to the final boss with ONE LIFE, and no continues left (No way that's getting a 1CC)... Died rather quickly, and it crushed me so hard that I've never gone back.

...I probably will once my NES set-up improves, as I do love me some Battletoads.

Yes. Fuck almost every stage after stage 3, lol.

Levels 1-3 are good. Among the best on the NES honestly. I really like that early section of Battletoads. The Turbo Tunnel isn't even that hard and gets way too much hate. People who have passed the Turbo Tunnel know the worst is yet to come, in large numbers and in a way stronger force.

Battletoads is one of my favorite games on the NES. Super varied level design and great controls.

If it had unlimited continues or a password/save, nobody would think twice about how great it is.

It would go a long, LONG way to helping it, that's for sure. There are definitely other things that could use sprucing up, but unlimited continues would do so, so much for that game.

I think it's one of the few games that deserves it's reputation, although the difficulty of turbo tunnel is super overblown. The game feels like an NES endurance challenge. I always get fucked over during the swimming part, level 10 I think?

That's Level 9(one of my most hated levels), Level 10 is Rat Race, one of the most intense stages in the game.

I'll tell you who always gets me. Sgt. C'mon Boy or whatever his actual name is. I try to run through him too fast, and then bam, dead.

EDIT: I think you can do Castlevania 3 though. You did Ninja Gaiden, you can do CV3.

Is there a particular NES->Famicom adapter I should get to allow my NES Everdrive to output extra sound channels to my Famicom?

The everdrive supports the extra sound channels no matter the version of the everdrive. In theory, if you got the adapter to your Fam it would work the same.

On my Analogue NT I put my North American Everdrive cart into the NES slot and i still get the upgraded audio channels from the FDS games as well as the various chips like the VR6/7 used in games like the Fam version of Castlevania 3.

I hope that helps.

Battletoads is brutal, don't get me wrong, but the main thing that separates those that can pass the game from those that can't (IMHO) is the ability to stock up lives in the second level. Repeatedly bounce enough crows off the wall and you can get well above the 5 on-screen visible lives, which will last you a long time once you've practiced the further levels. It's one of those games that requires the patience of a child with few games to get good at, but once you do it's entirely doable. I was never a fan of the sprite design (the heroes look great, but a lot of the enemies look a little off or just plain lazy), but the soundtrack is outstanding and the variety in the level design is stellar. I knew I was playing something special when the first boss battle took place from the boss's 1st person perspective (complete with red-tinted vision and on-screen icons indicating motion of camera). Friggin' brilliant.

Yeah, you can get 5 lives by holding down + A before pressing start at the beginning IIRC and the crows thing is potentially huge.

Oddly, the Genesis version stops scrolling the screen whenever you're bouncing a crow to make getting the 1-up super easy.

Yeah, the crow trick makes the 2nd level pretty tense.

Can someone explain to me how to consistently make the jumps in the turbo tunnel before you get on the vehicles? I used to think I had it down, I could have sworn there was some trick to it, but I keep screwing up. Seeing your toad fall through the ground is infuriating.

Yeah, there's no perspective trick, the bottoms of the islands are closer to each other than the tops. Kind of like two triangles that point up laid down next to each other. You can always run and jump for extra distance, but don't be too high up into the background and it shouldn't be a problem.

Going to be a bit late but I just grabbed Faxanadu. Never played it as a kid but people seem to really like it. Looking forward to giving it a go

I have not picked up Faxanadu again since I went into a dungeon/tower and I reached a room where a troll creature operating machinery(?) from high up dropped rocks on me. I was at full health and died in a couple of hits.

I dunno, the game just got on my nerves with its odd and dated conventions like rebuying keys to enter places and expensive vital items wearing out quickly.
