NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

I have not picked up Faxanadu again since I went into a dungeon/tower and I reached a room where a troll creature operating machinery(?) from high up dropped rocks on me. I was at full health and died in a couple of hits.

I dunno, the game just got on my nerves with its odd and dated conventions like rebuying keys to enter places and expensive vital items wearing out quickly.

Protip:

Run straight through, use the platforms.

How else would you say it? ;)
In Australia, 'Four Ex' means this:

Decided to replay Casltevania III this weekend, doing a Sypha runthrough. Its an interesting challenge, as while she has many issues (low health, hilariously low range on her main weapon) her spells even the playing field somewhat. Up to stage 6's bosses so far, I can get rid of two of the bosses, I'm now suck on the last. Once I get his pattern down I should be fine.

Its an incredibly solid CV game that's for sure. Awesome soundtrack, cool boss battles and a decent difficulty curve. Honestly, I've had more issues with stairs messing up my run than any enemies so far!

LOVE Castlevania 3, at least until that part with the falling blocks that form a wall you have to scale. Man, that part's annoying.

Yeah, I actually managed to avoid that section completely. I had to look it up afterwards as I was wondering why I'd missed it and I believe you scale the castle differently depending which companion you pick up along the way. So Sypha managed to avoid that section and have an easy decent to the Terror Trio boss gauntlet. Plus I managed to grab her homing shot attack which made the bosses rather simple to beat while taking minimal damage.

Death was also fairly straight forward as well, I was surprised as I expected him to be more danagerous, but the fire spell worked wonders on both phases.

Dracula though took more time to beat, mostly due to having to redo half the level if you died (no boss checkpoint). I did manage to beat him eventually though I had 1 block of health left! It was dead fun to replay the game, I've barely played it in comparison to other classic CV games so it was so nice to revisit it.

I watched a stream of someone playing Castlevania 3 and it looked really hard. Otherwise I might pick it up on 3DS Virtual Console.

The only NES games I have (if they don't get lost in the move) are Gradius, Galaga, and the original Final Fantasy.

I think I only played as her once (she seemed difficult to use well and couldn't really compete with Grant's wall climb), but props to you for using her well.

A single-character playthrough of CV3 actually sounds like a cool idea. I might try that later.

I can't say how well she holds up on a single-character playthrough but Sypha is an absurdly strong boss-killer; her magic absolutely chews through them and doesn't require the double or triple shot power-ups. Grant might be a pain in the ass to do a solo run with just because of his lame standard attack though...

I've only managed to finish CV3 one of the routes. The route with the falling blocks is super annoying because if you die on the boss it puts you back so far. Amazing game though. Really advanced for an 8-bit title. Anyway. Made a video of me beating Batman. This game is so good. Quite tricky but the music and character animation is incredible.

That was a cool video of the Batman game. Good job!! I'm going to try to find your Mega Man one which I think you mentioned having recorded.

Edit: Just watched your Mega Man 1 video. You nailed it....made the game look easy, which I know it's not.

Thanks dude! Such awesome games. Good job as I died a shit load trying to improve at them!

I don't really feel one way or the other about Pat. That guy he does his podcast with on YouTube is kinda irritating though. Seems full of self importance

Anyway I uploaded me clocking Mega Man if anyone fancies taking a look. Proof that any buffoon can finish it! Timu. I'd imagine you might be able to finish it using just the Mega buster?

https://youtu.be/TcYJOU_ShuQ

I uploaded a Mega Man longplay last year that I was using for other, more in-depth strategy videos that I never finished. Didn't plan on it being a no-death run since the Foot Holders are buggy shit, but it worked out that way.

Look at this baller Fire Man kill: https://youtu.be/uZG0jpZkSFg?t=21m28s I hypothesized that the only reason I couldn't do the controlled, shoot when he shoots method with the Ice Slasher was that you only get one shot at a time and it takes too long for it to scroll off-screen. Making a mad dash to the right worked out, but it was tight timing. Then I fuck up the easier pattern in the Wily stage, but oh well.

The score in Mega Man gives away when someone continues, lol.

That was brilliant. Puts me to shame! I always struggle with Fire Man. Just can't get the jump timing right. Haha yeah the score does give the game away. I used a good few continues on my run through I think. Was just happy to beat it!

Well, I was inspired by you guys and did a playthrough of Mega Man 1. I loaded up my game on the 2DS virtual console and played where I left off from last time. So I just did Ice man, Fire Man, and then the Wily stages. I use save states to keep from dying too much and having to start over. The Yellow devil is pretty tricky, and so are those platforms that shoot at you as you jump on them. I definitely learned some tips from watching your videos, so thanks for that. Cheers.

was faxanadu the game where you can get some kind of amulet that supposedly increases the strength of your attack, but it actually decreases it?

anyway, it was one of my favourites growing up.

The book project looks interesting but I'd be much more inclined to buy from someone with better perspective and writing chops, like Jeremy Parish. It feels like it's just replicating what's on the web. If you're going to do a book, it needs to look gorgeous and have world class writing.

I feel like the NES is begging for a better online compendium of some sort, however. I use NES Guide, Nintendo Age, Wikipedia and some other Famicom sites as references but no one place is a great central resource IMO.

That's cool man. Glad you played through it and the vids helped. It's not so tough once you get used to it. Save states would be a welcome edition for me for sure

Ha, ha, I'm tempted to play Mega Man 1 again, though it'll take me around 20-50 tries to master it without continues.=p

Yeah, it certainly helped. I have to watch your Castlevania video still. That's an even harder game in a lot of ways, you can only take like 4 hits in the later stages. Without save states it's even harder.

It's fun. I was glad I did. I finally got motivated to beat it. Mega Man games are amazing for NES games. They're very complex. It helps to know which weapon you can use on which boss.

I appreciate that, but I don't have anywhere near the bandwidth to do a comprehensive review index book—the Good Nintentions book (which includes extremely brief write-ups on every U.S. NES game) nearly killed me. However, the guy who put together questicle.net is reworking that online project into a book, and I'll be contributing a foreword to that.

Cool man yeah check it out if you get stuck or whatever. I find Castlevania easier but probably only because it's my favourite NES game and I must have played through it 30 odd times.

It's cool for me getting into finishing these titles that I could never beat as a kid. I'm going to have a pop at Mega Man 5, Journey to Silius and Shatterhand next I think

Do it Timu!

Journey to Silius is awesome dude, hope you enjoy that.

It may happen someday for me as I'm booked with playthroughs throughout 2016 on many systems, even ones I haven't done this year but will next year like on N64, Sega Saturn, Sega Dreamcast and hopefully Sega Master System and Sega CD.

It took me a year, on and off, to beat the game back when I was 7. I've been playing it a long time. Just being able to beat it means you're good, no worries.

Mzo, that Fire Man kill just made me smile on a cold Monday morning, so thank you for that.

haha, thanks!

There are two patterns to Fire Man. If you only shoot when he's stuck in his shooting animation (shoot when he shoots, in other words) his attacks come at regular intervals and are easy to jump over. The timing of the ground fire is short enough that you can stay in the air until it disappears. If you mash on the B button, though, Fire Man will go nuts and start throwing multiple flame waves and the whole thing just degrades into a war of attrition.

I bought it a while back but have one lyrics had a very quick go on it so far. The music is incredible as I remember. Where does it stand in the toughness stakes? Very beatable?

I remember struggling with Mega Man 2 as a kid. MM 1 would have slaughtered me!

It's beatable, but it has limited continues(3, which is insane IMO) and 3 lives per continue. You don't get any extra lives, health items are extremely rare(you may encounter up to around 5 throughout a playthrough) and it's best you use the required weapon to beat a boss(like in Mega Man) or else the fights will be longer. BTW it plays similar to Mega Man!

A 1CC is pretty difficult for this game!

Oh hey, this might be interesting:

Kickstarter: "Nintendo NES Library Guide & Review Book of 750+ Games!"

https://www.kickstarter.com/project...rary-guide-and-review-book-of-750?ref=popular

EDIT: Except for not shipping outside of the US.... Also, legibility should be improved by using paragraphs as well as larger margins.

I can't afford to back the Kickstarter, but I thought it looked like a decent resource of NES games. I also noticed it says he's from San Diego, which is near where I live, so that was cool to me.

Definitely agree with this, I have no interest in a book from Pat, but Jeremy Parish is a guy who could do justice to a project like this.

Nice to know! The quality of those reviews vary a bit imo, but definitely more interested in it when knowing you will be a part of it.

It's a huge number of games. Even if only spending one day on each (far too little to really 'get' many games) including the actual writing and getting some screens, that's two years full time work, before any formatting layout or structure or editing or anything else is done. You would loathe the NES by the end lol.

I just watched your Castlevania playthrough. You seriously don't mess around when it comes to that game. Really good stuff.

Good to know. I'll look for that. I think Pat's book looks decent. It really IS a massive amount of work to pull something like this off. And the additional stuff about accessories and label variants would seem to elevate it even more. I am thinking about getting it. If nothing else, I just like NES ephemera.

And, I need to pull the trigger on the Good Nintentions book, too.

Speaking of pulling triggers, I just bought a Famicom and FDS bundle from eBay that also comes with an FDS game I'm very interested in (the arcade Mario Bros port) for a decent price. The Famicom is not AV or RGB modded, though, so I'll be looking to sell or trade it toward getting an AV model.

Any advice on the best way to capture footage from my Famicom (and other RGB Scart enabled consoles?). I'd like to start recording my runs on Mega Man, Castlevania etc. and rather than use an emulator I'd like to record direct from my consoles. Any advice on what the best capture card etc. would be to get?

For RGB you want a Sync Strike with a VGA cable and one of these 3:

Startech PEXHDCAP
Startech USB3HDCAP
StarTech PEXHDCAP60L

I recommend the last one overall.
