NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Clingerwinger is the one stage in Battletoads I hate. Still I'm usually able to do it without losing too many lives even on a HDTV. Only one or two times I got frustrated, said "fuck this", and used the pause trick which makes it impossible to lose.

That's probably the trickiest part in the game. You had to remember you saw H power ups in the beginning.

Yeah I saw the HOV meter and thought maybe it was something down the line. Area 5 though, thats something tricky. About to break my hand hammering on this boss lol.

I almost told you that but I didn't want to ruin the surprise. Area 5 boss will fuck you up if you don't have your gun powered up. Area 5 is the first area you need to go in those extra rooms and get power ups for your gun.

Truth.

Made it but...this is tense as hell. I have no idea how many continues I have left.

Oh I love them. Volkmire's Inferno might be my favorite stage on NES. So fast and intense with a lot of variety and great excitement music that speeds up as you go through it.

Rat Race is a cinch as long as you know to hit the rat.

I could swear on the JPN Nes (and other revisions like Genesis and such) you don't have to hit the rat? Might be mis remembering. Drove me bonkers going back to play the US Nes one- feels impossible to do without hitting that dude.

Well thats that. Area 6's boss wrecked me. You'd think you would be able to attack it head on just fine (pincer weak spot) but its like you have to be somewhat close to damage it? Its like the best gun works against you due to where its weak spot is, and it seems like if you want to use that, you attack from the side?

I've 1cc'd Battletoads before. It's really all about getting the extra lives in the Wookie Hole. Once you've memorized the stages most of the execution isn't quite that bad.

With how I play I would need like 9 extra lives to make it possible, lol.

Also, 1CCing Battletoads is nuts!!!

Doing 1CC in Battletoads would be really super easy because there are spots with infinitely spawning 1-ups where you can keep adding up points and get infinite lives. Does that even count? Surf City and Terra Tubes are ones I know where you can do it for sure.

Sometimes I wind up with 20 lives by accident in the last part of Terra Tubes because I keep dying, I get the 1-up every time, and I keep getting points.

You see, they put the 1-up in one of the hardest points in the game. The game is more generous than most think.

I thought I may as well ask..

I'm looking for the following games:

- Crash n the Boys Street Challenge
- Stanley: Hunt for Professor Livingston
- Frankenstein Monster Returns

But especially I'm looking for Crash n the Boys..

Anyone here have a copy they're willing to sell?

I received my Famicom Disk Ram adapter in the mail today! Still waiting for the Fdsstick to arrive, but in the meantime, I can watch the "Please Set Disk Card" animation with Mario and Luigi, which is BEYOND endearing!

Thing is, I'm reallly, reallllly not wanting to do it to my Lagrange Point cart... I almost want to buy a second one to have it done and keep one fresh..

Yes, that is exactly what I would recommend. Don't mess with a true collectible item. Get a second one.

EDIT: Whoops, I see they are only translating original carts for this. Hmm. Well, tough choice then I guess.

Played some more Blaster Master today. Got to the third boss without losing a life.. And he smoked me a few times! Didn't want to run through stage 3 again after continuing, so I turned it off for now.

What a great game though. Feels great when you get to a boss with your gun powered up, ready to go.

So my Famicom Disc System finally came yesterday (ordered it forever ago!). The box came kinda fucked up (thanks USPS) and the system itself seemed fine. However, something in it is rattling around. Not a good sign.

So anyway, I hooked it up to my US top loader and booted it up and found that it works fine. It came with two games -- Zelda and Zelda II. They boot up fine, and Zelda II works. But Zelda won't start. Like, it runs, but it won't recognize the controller. I tested Ai Senshi Nicol as well, since I had that disc from before, and that works fine too.

Any thoughts on as to why I'm having trouble with Zelda? Does it require the JPN microphone controller or something? Should I worry about the rattling noise?

I'm going to be buying an AV Famicom at some point, just for now this is how I have to play haha

When you load the title screen ,flip the disk to B side.

Any must owns on the FDS? Y'all are my trusted sources these days.

LOL well that makes sense then... damn. Good to know!

No prob!

Well, out of my library I've got :

Doki Doki Panic
Mario 2
Nazo no Murasamejou
Metroid
Meikyujin Dababa
3d Hot Rally
Almana no Kiseki
Castlevania 1 and 2
both Zeldas

I want to get Ai Senshi Nicol at some point, but for now I'm playing it on the FDS Stick.

Usually the weapon of choice for BM is the regular gun for the long distance. For this boss though, you must use bombs to take them out as quickly as possible. If you can kill each block before the next one appears, then it's easy. If you let them pile up on you, then it'll become hard.

Yeah, I was able to beat it first try my next go around. They piled up pretty quickly, but I found his pattern easy to master, and was able to get through without taking much damage.

Quite possibly my favourite part of the game so far is when Blaster Master himself is out of the tank and crawling around. He's so cute when he ducks!

I now have all but a handful of the first 50 or so issues of Nintendo Power. I recently decided I would like to have all the issues that cover the NES library, but thought it would take me months and years of picking on eBay since I never see these in the wild. Then I ran into a guy selling duplicates from his collection on Facebook Marketplace. Add in a handful I found at a flea market and a decent copy of the very first issue via eBay and my goal is nearly reached in swift fashion!

Any chance there is someone in this thread that can flash my copy of Lagrange Point with the english patch?

I'd be definitely interested in this as well.

http://www.nesreproductions.com/

This is the site I've seen, but I've never dealt with them, can anyone else chime in?

Had my FFIII famicart flashed by them, no issues whatsoever.

Are you bros serious??

I have a bajillion famicom carts, and I'd love to have them flashed to English. Didn't know that was even possible. Someone I asked before said something like, you're better off getting generic carts that fit the bill, then flashing roms to those.

How much does a flashing cost?

The interest I have in flashing Lagrange Point, is it's the only way (besides a High-Def NES mod) to play the english translation on real hardware with sound, due to the custom Konami mapper on the cart (with an FM chip!)

i remember that board =)

Is this a regional or age thing? Because I also used to refer to stages as boards!

edit: Lagrange has an English patch? Well! I better get on that. Game sounds amazing finally hearing it on the Hi-Def NES (no audio using just Everdrive + NESRGB)... but of course I couldn't play it due to the language barrier. I would love to get into this game... it sounds remarkably like a PC Engine game.

25 bucks shipped I think? To be honest, it's like buying a new game / paying for a repro cart, except you've got the original cart and label as a shell.

Only ones I'd get flashed are rpgs that never hit outside Japan. Same goes for SFC carts.

Edit: Wait so Lagrange point can be played on NA hardware without an extra mod?

Cool. I might want to flash Sweet Home, Mother, Langrange Point, Final Fantasy 1+2 cart, Final Fantasy 3, Kuniokun games, etc.

Yeah, I'd definitely recommend an Everdrive for most translations, just from ease of use.

Not sure about a North American NES, though I know some people have modded them to use expansion audio. I have an AV Famicom, which would run it fine. Likewise, my Everdrive plays it fine, though it can't reproduce the music, so the game is pretty quiet!

You can mod the front loader by adding a resistor. I have one done this way. The top loader can not be modded in this way.

He's supposed to be a chibi Animu character from the Japanese version.

It's so bizzre that they thought the Japanese story of fighting in an alien war to be too 'out there'... and replaced it with the idiotic frog Alice in Wonderland thing!

Man, I like our story SO much better though. I think the game wouldn't have nearly the nostlagia for me without the whole frog plot. It's like GUN*NAC in reverse -- I love the JP version so much more because it's freaking wacky!

I must have rented Blaster Master a dozen times from the local shop, but never got past world 4. I did beat it via emulation many a year later when I had the assistance of save states. I still love watching the BM runs at speedrun marathons.

Also, the whole frog thing threw me for a loop even as a kid.

Toxic waste was the in thing so I can see that. Everything was mutant this and nuclear that.

I can't get blaster master working in my AVS, but it just occurred to me I could probably be playing the Japanese version.

What's it called? Big Bang or something like that?
