NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

The interest I have in flashing Lagrange Point, is it's the only way (besides a High-Def NES mod) to play the english translation on real hardware with sound, due to the custom Konami mapper on the cart (with an FM chip!)

My friend bought a repro of the Famicom Lagrange cart on Ebay, and you can play with the English translation and the VRC chip on actual hardware (provided you have a way of playing Fami games).

He's supposed to be a chibi Animu character from the Japanese version.

It's so bizzre that they thought the Japanese story of fighting in an alien war to be too 'out there'... and replaced it with the idiotic frog Alice in Wonderland thing!

This is the best localization change ever. Not just games but in maybe anything. Generic alien war story changed to the hilarious insanity of a boy jumping into a hole, finding a tank, and going to fight monsters and demons to rescue his pet frog.

Does Blaster Master have saves or passwords? Need to decide if this is a weekend game or after work. I've probably only ever made it past the first or second boss in my limited experience with it in the past.

I've popped Blaster Master in and I'm on the boss area of the 4th stage. Lost zero lives so far. Let's see how long I can keep it going. I don't know the boss here well so it'll probably be here.

Made it to World 8 and I died some really stupid ways.

Spoilers for a 20+ year old game incoming.

Being able to walk on the ceiling and sticking to the corners of ledges sucks. It should be awesome. But it's not. The environment killed the shit out of me because Sophia kept clinging onto things when I meant to jump. What a stupid fucking mechanic to put at the end of the game, then not let you get used to it, then surround you with spikes. It's so cumbersome and easily the worst part of the game. Well, so far. I haven't fought the final boss yet.

That said, it's the farthest I've ever got in the game and I'm pretty sure now that I can beat it. Even with my quibbles in the spoiler'd section, man, I love this game.

Anyone have any tips on getting better performance out of NES controllers and/or any new third party controllers that are any good? My drawer of controllers all have at least one quirk to them ranging from being unresponsive to just plain stiff and uncomfortable to play with.

My fave NES story line ever. Nuclear frog - love it.

I played some Blaster Master today. Got to the boss in Area 3 and got killed a few times and decided to stop for the night. Thanks for the heads up on skipping the unnecessary doors, although I really like those top down levels. Fun game, the bosses are definitely bullet sponges, at least with my weak stuff. Is the A button "bomb" weapon unlimited when you are fighting the bosses or is it part of your inventory weapons?

Unlimited. You'll probably be surprised how easy that boss is when you start using bombs and try to get rid of each block as soon as it appears. If you do it fast enough, it won't have a chance to attack.

Regarding original NES controllers, you can rescue them!

Open the controller, minding the position of the innards so you can put it back together more easily.

Remove the plastic bits, use a cotton swab with a nonabrasive cleaner, like maybe windex (don't want to dry out the rubber) around the sides of the plastic buttons.

Clean up the rubber beneath the buttons as well. There are contacts on the back of the rubber buttons. Give them a cleaning as well.

Now, for the board, where the buttons make contact, you can take a magic eraser and gently rub them clean! You can also use a swab with alcohol, but make sure you get it dry before you put it back together.

I've invigorated many controllers this way!

The only thing you can't easily fix, is damage to the rubber... Buttons sometimes don't depress and bounce back up when the rubber is damaged. You can buy replacements parts though I'm not sure how well they function in comparison to original. Still, worth while to rescue a controller probably.

The 8BitDo wireless controllers are fantastic. I've not had any problems with lag

Watch this. As Polio said, you can easily re-invigorate them. This not an NES controller, but the steps are almost exactly the same.

I'm really hoping the 8bitdo receivers are updated to be compatible with controllers connected to a Wii Remote someday. I'd love to be able to use Nintendo's legit NES Classic Mini controllers with an actual NES wirelessly.

I understand from a post earlier in the thread people don't object to sale posts in here so here goes. UK peoples. Selling a couple of very nice NTSC games, Zelda, v good condition boxed complete with map. And Popeye boxed complete. Shoot me a dm if anyone's intersted, UK only I'm afraid or maybe Europe if you don't mind paying the extra postage

First hard boss is stage 5. You'll want be powered up before that.
I made it to this boss tonight and died and had to shut er down. I think I can get here without a death on my next play through. What's the easiest way to power up weapon for the boss? Can you keep going in the other doors and have them respawn weapon power ups or are they gone for good once you get them?

Pulled the trigger on an AV Famicom last night.

Will likely pick up an AVS next.

I saw in an interview that the AVS folks are planning to use that tech in a portable version. I'm salivating over the prospect.

I was going to leave the question to someone else but no one took it. I don't really remember. I think you just get power ups from killing regular enemies and blowing up blocks. The ones that don't respawn power you up a lot faster.

Congrats on the AV Famicom. I had mine modded by Baphomet, and I couldn't be happier. It's a really clean looking piece of hardware, especially with a translucent red Everdrive N8 in it.

Got an FDS stick in the mail this morning. It's sweet!

So what's all this about later Famicoms mixing the expansion audio incorrectly? I've been googling around and it seems that the expansion audio plays slightly "too loud" compared to the level of internal audio? Is that accurate?

I have two Famicoms. A "Famicom Family" labelled OG Famicom and an AV Famicom. I'm gonna go ahead and guess they're both the later models mixing too loud.

Listening to Zelda II on FDS, I could imagine that the expansion audio is louder than it needs to be, compared to the internal sound.

I'd like to know this, because I'm about to drop coin on an RGB Famicom mod... but if there's a superior model, I'll hunt that down and mod that.

Congrats Onpoint! I bought mine already modded from Baphomet, and am superhappy with it, so you should definitely ask him.

Dang, $85 is a good price. The ones I've been looking at are $150 to $200, though I've been looking at ones that are in excellent condition with the box and the whole shebang.

Anyone got any pictures I can see of their Baphomet mods?

If you look a page or two back, I posted a pic of mine when I received it. Bapho sent me an internal shot after he finished the mod, I can upload that when I get home later this evening. Looks very clean.

Yup. I paid around $70 for mine, but it was console only: no AV Cable, PSU, or dog bone controllers.

damn even that isn't bad. I've had no luck finding an affordable AV Famicom. If I could find one that didn't look like it was covered in shit for under 100, even if it doesn't have AV, PSU or Controller I would be happy. Do US Dog bones work on it?

The only ones I see that aren't ebay and hoping you luck out on an auction have been crazy expensive. Just at AVGC like 2 or 3 weeks ago there was a booth with one, that looked like the previous owner wiped some one's ass with it, with a PSU for 160. Which is INSANE.

So I understand that Battletoads US version has a glitch in 2 player mode so that at a certain level, player 2's controls become unresponsive, and the only way to continue is to have one player die and the other play continue on his own.

This was fixed in Japanese and PAL versions, though the Japanese version is also a lot easier.

I want to know, is there a ROM for the US version without the bug?
Or can the PAL version be played without speed issues?

Let's say I'm playing on the AVS.. Is there any difference in playing NTSC and PAL games?
Any speed issues?

goddamn, i may have severely underestimated Guardian Legend

you're here thinking oh okay its a cool IREM shooter, always down for that then its on some blaster master/zelda/zillion type shit and its like ohhhh shiiiiiiit okay

you know what else is dope as fuck? whoever in this thread or retro-GAF that pointed out my love of the arcade Goonies is satisfied by an excellent FC port, holy shit this is a blast

Lol, actually it's the other way around.

Goonies is a Famicom game, that was ported to the arcade in the Playchoice 10/Vs. Famicom based arcade boards.

I love it too, it's a very fun, more focused game than Goonies II. I even made myself a 'retail' release of the FDS version.

Correct, it's not a port.

And it is a fun little game! Literally little - it's not very long. Really feels like an arcade platformer because of that, though. I really love it. Try playing it with a stick!

Onpoint, here you go. This is alook at the inside of my AV Famicom, as modded by Baphomet. He did a great job, and says it would've been even cleaner (Not sure how!) if there wasn't an issue with the first NESRGB board he installed.

The console itself looks flawless from the outside. Bapho installed a very small switch on the back for the different palettes, and added a red LED for the power switch, but you could always just ask for those to be left off if you wanted the system to look stock.

That's super nice. I think once it comes I shall have to look into this.

Do I just PM him here on GAF?

Got to the area 6 boss on Blaster Master. I think I can get him next time. Underwater level and an ice level that weren't super annoying. That's rare.
