NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Was playing Kid Dracula yesterday (finally), and that game is awesome. However, the final two bosses was frustrating as all hell, and I eventually gave up and wrote down the password. However, when I tried again today, I inserted the password, and was placed at level 7 (of 9). Is this a case of me having written down the wrong password (which can easily be done with the kanjis and whatnot), or is that simply the last password you get in this game?

Funny, I played through it yesterday myself. I'm not completely sure but I think I read somewhere that it won't give you the passwords for the last two levels.

How weird my Kid Dracula just came from Japan on Friday. That game is awesome. I love how the first level theme is a happy take on Castlevania III's opening music.

lol @ all the coincidental KD love in March. I always play those kinds of games around Halloween.

Tho I guess OnPoint received theirs on Friday the 13th... spooooky

Ok, nice to know! Anyways, do you have some decent strat for the giant robot in the end? I think I tried for an hour on him, and could only beat him once :( Kid Dracula is just too damn slow.

Haha, yeah this is great!

I found this out yesterday. If you look closely you'll notice he bobs up and down a bit. When he's at the highest point is when you should run underneath him. That way he won't hit you when he drops down if you continue to run.

Aha, I didnt realize this. But can you run in this game? Or do you just have to be very precise?

So in Ninja Gaiden 2 I'm doing well but still dying quite a bit due to the stage hazards. I'll try to overcome it though. Oddly enough I beat Ashtar on the 3rd try.

Beat Mega Man 1 yesterday. I always had it in my head it was ultra difficult. It really isn't at all. Fairly straightforward

This is how you do retro, GAF. My original NES and the original TV I played it on in the 80s.

Very cool. What size TV do y'all prefer to play your NES? I lean towards 13 or 19in. Not sure why, maybe it gives me a PlayChoice feel or something. I fortunately have a couple of 13in TVs in the house on standby.

Cool. I had a 13-inch Magnavox TV that I used for YEARS for gaming. I got it when I was like in kindergarten in 1984 or so. Used it from the time I got my NES in 87 through SNES, 3DO and PS1 until I went to college in 97. I always felt like the sharpness and color were so good on that thing. Only RF, though, so it was probably just my imagination. Kinda weird to think that Magnavox is like a shit budget brand now.

Anyway, cool setup! That's how you relive memories right there.

ya that looks like the tv I had before my dad got me my first tv

meaning i had a hand me down before we went to the wiz to get this silver rca tv that I gave to my friend who was running on a black and white tv for a good part of the 90s

That's insane!!!

Insane that it took that long or insane that I beat Tyson? I haven't been playing Punch Out for over 20 years straight but it's something I come back to every now and again.

It feels so fucking good to finally beat it legit.

I also never beat Tyson in my youth. It wasn't until about six or so years ago. He's actually rather easy to TKO once you know the patterns. I felt embarrassed that I hadn't beat him earlier.

The worst part is enduring the first 1:30 of the first round. That killed me more than anything else because if I got knocked down during that part it was better just to reset.

That one as he's nearly impossible.=p

If you punch him back after dodging during the first 1:30, he swings fewer times overall. After that he's like any other Punch Out guy.

I think impossible is a gross exaggeration!

Even if you know his pattern your reaction time HAS to be on point. If you hesitate for more than half a second you're fucked in the first 1:30. If he blinks and you mess up the timing you have to immediately block his jabs and then dodge again.

Not an easy fight by any stretch even if you know what to do. And I say this as someone who's beaten some of the hardest NES games out there like: Batman trilogy, Gremlins 2, Ninja Gaiden 1 and 2, Shatterhand (Natch), Castlevania 1 and 3, Contra, Super C, Shadow of the Ninja, Double Dragon 2 (on Normal), and Zen: Intergalactic Ninja.

So I finally did manage to beat this game, the final boss wasnt really hard, but man 9 out of 10 times I couldnt pass that big robot head. However, I actually ended up doing the oppositve of this, which was running under it when it was at its lowest. For some reason, this worked better for me, even though it is contra-intuitive. Maybe my timing is just really terrible, I dont know, but it was nice finally being able to beat it after probably like 50 tries and only 5 successes. Amazing game!

Edit: About Punch Out, I find that game insanely difficult, and couldnt even get through Bald Bull 2. However, I was playing the game on Virtual Console, so maybe there is a slight lag or something making it harder? Have heard something about this. Or maybe I just suck :(

How is Zen: Intergalactic Ninja? Worth picking up? Local retro store is selling it for $75... is that a bit steep?

It's 50ish on eBay. Man, I didn't know it was that much. I got it super cheap back in the day. How crazy.

Honestly didn't like it that much. I'll have to give it another go.

Eek, this was the last brand new NES game I bought, and I think I paid maybe $10-15 for it. When did games I bought back in the day start getting expensive? Haha. Of course I didn't keep the box, but I still have the cart and manual.

I personally love Zen, it's got that layer of Konami polish. With so many different gameplay styles, it's got a kind of Battletoads-esque feel to it. Pair that eith some good boss fights, good graphics, and decently catchy music, and I'd say it's highly recommended.

Brutal! TV's were expensive back in the day though.

So if I was to get an RGB modded Famicom AV. and an adapter to play NTSC Nes games there would be little difference between this and a modded top loader?

was playing contra last night on my little 14" PVM. Took some pictures for the scanlines thread but heres one for huggers to hype him up more for the NESRGB

So I've been watching old famicom / super famicom related japanese videos. I stumbled upon this: https://youtu.be/QNKXQRNL3II?t=10m33s

If you're on mobile go to 10:33.

The kiosks for the Famicom Disk System in Japan seemed to use NES-style cartridges for holding game ROM complete with a toaster-style cartridge slot. I guess this was a way to keep convenience stores / customers from just popping famicoms in and writing those to disk.

I use an AV Famicom, even though I own mostly US Nintendo games. It's definitely the way to go, since you end up getting expansion audio on things like Castlevania 3.

Damn that looks great. Wish I had money to spare on an NESRGB modded NES.

Speaking of Contra. I think there's some sort of curse on me or something which makes me unable to get ahold of a cart of the FC version. First I bid on one on ebay and won it, but it never arrived. I got the money back though, so even though it was disappointing I didn't lose anything. Then I bought a cart off of another guy, and when it arrived the box it was shipped in had been crushed and the plastic on the cart had cracked etc. It didn't even boot up. Not even a gray screen. Only a blue screen. The guy will send a replacement though, but how unlucky can I get with this game?? :(

So after getting this info from Zing, my curiosity about ROM versions led me to a quick Google search for some kind of database. Which led me to a similar inquiry by Zing a few years ago. Which led me to the bootgod website. Which is totally insane. I honestly don't even know what I'm looking at as I page through the site.

However, I found this chart showing release numbers per year very interesting. It shows that while we always think of the NES as an icon of 80s gaming, the bulk of titles released for the system across all three territories actually came in 1990-92. Fully one-quarter of total North American releases came out in 1990 alone. Of course, most of the classic games that defined the system were released from 85-90.

That is fan-fucking-tastic. Check out the detail on the lower tip of the stylized C. That's just killer!

I just always used planetemu.net and browsed their rom database to determine if there are known rom revisions. Bootgod is useful for finding label revisions (seal of quality).

Is there a consensus on the best way to play FDS games? I'm getting itchy to play through some and am having a hard time deciding what hardware to go with...

I run FDS to RGB AV Famicom. I'm eventually going to RGB mod an original Fami as a dedicated FDS machine. OG Fami+FDS so sexy.

Flash carts don't do FDS correctly at all, both main ones have off sound, making the games unplayable. So has to be the real thing.

Not a problem for me I love FDS. My set:

Even if you do the sound mod on the NES?

So what is the deal with the disk system. Since I've never really imported games I never really looked into what it actually is.

It's an add-on floppy disk drive for the Famicom. Originally the floppies allowed for larger games than cartridges at the time since they had more storage capacity, and the disks were rewriteable so you could save your game. Zelda was the first game for the FDS for example. Metroid was another title which allowed you to save your progress. And Excitebike allowed you to save your tracks. Games were also cheaper to manufacture, which meant cheaper prices for consumers as well.

Cartridge storage capacity quickly became larger than the floppies though, which resulted in less and less games released for the FDS as games became bigger and more ambitious. Most of the later ones are cheap, crappy shovelware. I think there were around 200 FDS games released in total.

Was there any in game reason to get or want to get now the disk version of a game that is also a cart? Such as Zelda and Metroid?
