NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Parcel from Baphomet klaxon!

Is that my box? I'm trying to figure out who the hell Abraham Villalobos is.

It seems odd to ask this question in the NES / Famicom thread of all places. NES and Famicom are almost like two different machines.

-different games that never came here (hundreds of them)
-variations of games that did come here... Some with superior sound and visual enhancements
-completely different designs and paradigms for how the machines work and the carts look
-different accessories

And it's not an either/or thing. I collect for NES and Famicom. Actually at this point, it seems really strange to collect NES and not get into the Famicom. It's part 2 of the world of NES (or is that part 1?)

Thanks. It's not odd to a person looking in from the outside. I don't collect consoles (no space) but i'm curious about those who do.

I need my games in English so I can read the text, and I'm not interested in learning Japanese. So it's curious to me.

Famicom software is really easy to understand if you don't speak Japanese. I can't think of much outside of RPGs you'd really need to know the language for. A lot of them even have English in menus.

Haha it's definitely yours Baph. I wondered the same thing. Just setting the Nes up now

Odd, I'm 100% sure I bought that box and those packing peanuts that morning. Oh well, as long as everything arrived safely were good. Let me know when you get everything tested out!

Hey Baph! Just sent you a PM wondering about some PCE RGB.

Yup, I saw that. I'll reply a bit later when I'm not on mobile. Thanks!

That's the thing - I'm mainly an RPG person for 8 and 16 bit games. ;)

But if they have english options that'd be great!

Whoops, I meant a lot of Famicom games have English in the menus... not RPGs in particular. Far as I know, most Famicom RPGs are Japanese through and through.

Have you heard the good word about the PC Engine / Turbo, by the way? There are a bunch of RPGs in English and it's both 8 bit AND 16 bit.

First things first. HUGE thanks to Baphomet for sorting this out for me and shipping it all the way to the UK for a very reasonable price. The RGB Nes arrived today and I finally set it up on my BVM. It looks fucking outrageously good. I took some pics but really they do it no justice at all. But yeah, it's really awesome. If you're on the fence about the RGB mod, get off it. It is amazing. Bright and clear beyond belief

Cheers again Baph. Top work

Congrats on the pick up dude. Welcome to Club RGB lol. It really is an eye opener seeing games in RGB. CV3 was the first game I fired up also.

Thanks Bancho. Really happy with it. Brings all your Nes games back to life big time . CV3 looks incredible

Did Takahashi Meijin 4 have a really low print run? It must've come out really late in the Fami's life. Haven't seen one in like years.

I wish there was an easy way to record off RGB. I'd love to use it on videos since it's gorgeous but I don't even know where to start.

Stuck on s-video and component, which isn't all that bad but still.

This capture card records RGB perfectly and isn't expensive(I own it so I would know as I use it on my SNES, Genesis and Saturn).

15-158-317-TS

It even records 240p games in component as well.

Oh yeah, it's the Startech Pexhdcap.

It can't do composite and svideo, but it does everything else(component, RGB, VGA, DVI, HDMI). I use it for my Dreamcast with VGA as capture cards rarely do VGA anymore.

Neat, thanks. How do you go from a SCART cable to the card?

I know I tried RGB to component to the Elgato, but it can't detect a 240p signal coming from component.

You need a Sync Strike(which I have) or the Xsync-1 from solaris. You connect the scart cable from the console to the sync device and then use a VGA cable to connect from the sync device to the capture card directly.

Just beat Heavy Barrel. Very good little game. Albeit primitive and the hitbox is pretty biased against you. But yeah, way better than all 3 of the NES Ikari warriors games and Guerrilla War. Why were all of the ports of Ikari Warriors on NES terrible? The 3rd game at least had good graphics but the gameplay was balls.

Anyoneknow what a reasonable price for Crisis Force is? Just looking for the cart and eBay seems like only option.

Oh, im also the proud owner or a famicom disk system. Been wanting one for ages so I finally picked one up. It comes with the ac adapter but Im assuming I wont be able to use it here in the US. So far I have Metroid and Golf. Any fds game reccomendations?

Japanese ac adapters work fine here. I've run Japanese systems for years and suffered no ill consequences.

My favorite FDS game is VS Excitebike, which is pretty much a split-screen two player version of excitebike.

Notable FDS games: Castlevania 1, Zelda 1 & 2, Doki Doki Panic, Kid Icarus, Super Mario Bros 2 (Lost Levels here in the US).

But really if you could only get one, and you enjoy local multiplayer, VS Excitebike is awesome.

It uses very, very little power and has a special adapter. I wouldn't recommend plugging in an old Japanese adapter to a US outlet. Even if it works it'll run hotter than necessary. If anything, use a US adapter that puts out something in the same range that they system needs.

Luckily the FDS can run on C batteries like forever, so you can just ignore that issue.

I just got one myself and got some great recommendations a couple of pages ago.

Basically anything by Konami is amazing, and we never got much of it here. Otocky is the most interesting game I got in the deal. I'm absolutely in love with it.

I could list like 50 games.

Arumana no Kiseki
Ai Senshai Nicol
Meikyuu Jiin Dababa
Falsion
Gyruss (better music than the NES version)
Wardner no Mori
Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa (better music than the cart version)
Exciting Soccer (very fun Konami 8-bit soccer game)
Vs Excitebike - it's a genuine sequel.

Metroid Zelda and Zelda 2 have better sound on FDS.

I love Disuku Shisutemu!

On the subject of the Famicom Disk System, is it safe to import one (I've heard stories about the drives/drive belts breaking). I'd rather not import one and have it die shortly after! I'd love to get one though, to play the FDS versions of NES games like Metroid, SMB2, Zelda, Castlevania etc.

Speaking of Metroid, I'm playing through the NES version at the moment. The lack of health on restarting is the biggest hurdle, as I hate grinding for health. After getting the wave beam though I've not really had that problem. Just managed to beat Ridley, just got Kraid to go now. I'm enjoying the game, the music especially (is got a great creepy, ambient thing going).

Nice.

I've got genesis and n64 hooked up with rgb on a pvm, how much does a nes mod cost.

I just looked through my oldest ebay emails, crazy the prices I used to get stuff at ten years ago. I got sealed copies of FDS Castlevania and Doki Doki panic for $20.

Mine hasn't broken in 15 years of use.

Oh lol, on my phone it just looked like an a video plug.

Anyway, I'm surprised no one has tried to figure a way to use the nes expansion port with the fds, or is that impossible?

Or even a clone fds accessory of sorts like the powerbase FM mini for genesis.

The FDS doesn't use the expansion port.

a clone fds probably wont happen because the the nes/fd everdrive supports fds.

Also, to play fds on nes, couldnt you just extend an famicom to nes converter? I dont know how it might affect the sound though.

Many of the FDS that you find on eBay will advertise that they have a new belt. Try finding one that says that and you'll be fine. Also the 6 C-Batteries that it uses to power itself last FOREVER. Seriously.

You can hook up an NES to a FDS. You just need a HoneyBee adapter and a top loading NES.
