NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

I actually just ordered a FDS. Hopefully it'll still be working after its trip across the pond. I'm still not entirely sure there are enough reasons to own one--at the moment I'm only looking at SMB2 and Nazo no Murasame-jo. If nothing else, I'll get to listen to the startup jingle.
You mirror my thoughts. I want one for completion's sake, but there are precious few games I care about on it. I was hovering over one in Japan but since they didn't have those two games, I got a Super Famicom instead (obviously cool but since I modded my SNES, an extravagance).

I'd say that's DEFINITELY worth €55. Some of those are worth close to that much alone.

Edit: Hell, a Turtles 2 cart alone can sometimes go for around €30 on the Swedish auction site I used to buy from.

Nice! I will try to buy them.

Turtles 2 is the more expensive of that loot?

I'm not completely up to date on NES prices anymore, but I'd say that and Super Turrican are usually pretty expensive. I don't know how much Super Turrican usually goes for though. I just remember hearing it's pretty expensive usually. I think it might be a PAL exclusive.

Edit: Super Turrican might actually be the most expensive of them. Looking it up, it is indeed a PAL exclusive, and it was released in 1993! So it's probably pretty uncommon. I can say I've not run into it very often.

Worst case scenario, Zappers of both colors are not rare at all and quite cheap. (not the japanese revolver one, though!)

I have no idea what I did the first time but the Zapper is working now. Maybe I was at a bad angle or something but I am glad it works.

My favorite game on the system. Congrats.
Been holding out on this one for far too long.

PAL or JP?
NTSC-junkie, so JP. And them extra sound channels.

Completely OT but lol, either this retro game seller has a great sense of humour or toilet rolls Made in Japan is a big thing. "There are two times that of ordinary goods suction force. Please realize the difference. There is i-pod only for a comparison of the size. Ships by bending a core."

It was cheap.

traded a fellow gaffer for one of my high NES wants: Vice Project DOOM - why don't more people talk about this one? it's now on my list next to Wrath of the Black Manta for gems people should talk about more

I've never played Wrath (gonna look into it now), but yeah agreed. Lucked up on Vice awhile back at a flea market (the guy apparently had ALOT more games, for 5 bucks each, but I got there too late), but havent gotten really into it. It does seem like something Platinum would have made if they existed back then.

EDIT: Thrift Shops. Aw yeah:

Got Nintendo logo + copyright and the year 1989 so I guess its official? Of course I wasnt old enough (or wasnt looking at anything Mario aside from lunchkits and shirts) so I dont remember seeing these in stores.

I figure this is a good place to ask... does anyone know where you can get empty cases/high quality labels made? My mario 2 and mario 3 both have broken cases. Some of the plastic that holds the PCB in place broke (identically on both games). You can hear the plastic rattle around. I tried to superglue them into place and it worked... for a couple of times, but inevitably pushing them into the new 72-pin connector knocked them loose again. Mario 3 I can still get to work, but Mario 2 I can't push in without the entire PCB being pushed back into the case on one side.

Mario 3 I could live with as it is, but not being able to play mario 2 is just too sad. I've been tempted to just remove the board from one of the crappier games I have (I'm looking at you Hydlide!!) but that wouldn't solve the label issue.

For the cases I was going to say that you can pick up the ones that retrousb.com are selling but looking now I can't find them on their site anymore. It's the same cases they put the PowerPaks and their homebrew games/repros in. But it seems they're not selling them anymore. Bummer because they're pretty high quality.

Interesting. But snap together? Not like Famicom carts I hope...? Because ideally I'd like to be able to open them up again for cleaning.

Not digging those carts... but I may not have much of a choice... Mario 3 will need a replacement sooner or later and Mario 2 just isn't working... Damn those games saw a lot of action.

Got my BitBox order from StoneAgeGamer!

These are definitely some good cases. If I had to compare them to anything, they're like the cases that Disney used to use for their VHS tapes. They're solid feeling, not flimsy. The printing is pretty good. They used a paper that's a little thicker and more solid than standard printer paper. Overall I'm really satisfied with these cases. It'll be great once I can get a good shelf to display them all in. Definitely more expensive than modified UGCs but I think they're worth it.

Yea they're nicer than the ugc's in my opinion. Stone age gamer have sent me a handful with some of my orders. If I displayed my games I would invest in them, but I like them in their drawers just fine.

Man i'd love some of these *_*

So after installing an nes rgb board for a GAF member on a toploader with one of those 3d printed SNES multiout panels, I'm selling my rgb front loader and buying myself a toploader with that 3d SNES panel for myself.

Its in great condition and comes with everything needed. Looking for $350 shipped in the states if anyone is interested.

Also, if anyone is considering buying one of those 3d printed panels for their toploader I definitely recommend them. They look great and work very good.

Do you install nesrgb boards as a service? I'm looking for someone to do the work eventually.

That game tech guy says no new orders until October. It sucks.

man, those are pretty sharp! how much they run you? i think i'm committed to my UGC's after all the work i put in, heh.

Depends on how many you buy, and whether or not you get printed cover art and/or instruction manual pouches, but they typically run about $2-$3 a case.

If you wait until a holiday, they're usually running sales that can take 10-15% off the price. I ended up paying about $125 for 60 cases with printed cover art.

After collecting for a few years, I decided to finally give importing a try and man I am glad I did. I decided to order a Famicom adapter after my success with the Super Famicom games, which should be here in a couple of weeks. I really want a twin Famicom, but it is too expensive for now. As someone who grew up playing a lot of NES, it will be interesting to see what we missed out on compared to the Famicom.

I never really looked deep into the import Famicom scene. Most of the stuff I'd like is kind of redundant (and would need a Disk System), like the original Metroid and Castlevania with save slots and the real SMB2. Just stuff I think is cool.

Famicom only I'd mainly be interested in all the Konami releases we didn't get like King Kong 2, Getsu Fuma Den, Gradius 2, and Bio Miracle Bokutte Upa as well as the enhanced versions of games we did get like Contra and Castlevania 3.

I'd like the Famicom release of Valis, as well, even though I'm sure it's as bad as only a Valis game could be.

I'm sure there's a ton more, but I haven't really looked.

lol

I played through Valis 3 on Genesis for the first time a couple years ago. I was so struck at how bad the scrolling was and how you couldn't see in front of you at all. How does one fuck up the camera of all things so badly in a 2D game?

I'd say you can't go wrong with pretty much any FC-exclusive Konami action/platform game. The Goonies, Ganbare Goemon, Getsufuu Maden, the Wai Wai World games, Kid Dracula and Gradius 2 are all pretty great.
Some other good ones are King Kong 2, the Twinbee games, Yume Penguin Monogatari and Hi no Tori.

Other non-Konami games I'd recommend checking out are Famicom Wars, Super Tetris 2 + Bombliss if you like Tetris, Pooyan for some old-school arcade fun, Namco's Wanpaku Graffiti, and of course Sunsoft's Hebereke (Ufouria: The Saga) and Gimmick! if we ignore that they came out in Europe.

Also I love the hardcases that a lot of Namco's games come in. Has made me pick up a few games that I otherwise probably wouldn't have like Side Pocket, Family Pinball and Super Xevious, since they tend to be pretty cheap.

I'll add Pizza Pop! to the Famicom recommendations. It's a fun little action platformer by Arc System Works where you play as a pizza delivery guy. And it has a really cool cartridge.

I buy basically everything on Famicom now assuming there isn't a massive language barrier. I just love the cartridges soooo much. I need to get an FDS soon so I can play Otocky.

Does anyone know the deal with NES in Europe and the various "different" regions? Do SCN games (Scandinavian) work on say UK NES systems or German ones?

It seems like somewhat of a mess, unless ive missunderstood things. The SNES seems more simple in Europe in that all PAL games work on all PAL systems?

Am i getting that right? I want to purchase a NES again, and would just like to know these things.
