NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Do any of you know how upgrading of the firmware works? I know that you need some kind of JTAG USB Blaster but is it just plug and play? Or do you need to install something unto the NESRGB board before blasting away?

I had to upgrade mine (though it was in the last batch). You can upgrade it before you install the NESRGB or while it's in the NES (I did mine before install since I knew about it beforehand). You just connect the JTAG USB Blaster to the board, open a program on your computer, then run the upgrade. The board already has a row of holes ready to accommodate the Blaster, easy as pie.

On that note, if anyone in New Zealand ever needs theirs blasting, I am happy to do it for you. Just sayin'...

Someone must have dissolved at least part of his/her collection, because there were a bunch of new, boxed games at a local games store I check from time to time. Not much that interested me, though, so I only picked up a copy of Chessmaster which I can't even play because it's NTSC (I have a historical interest in chess games, so whatever), and a copy of Simon's Quest with the manual included - which is kinda funny.

Got a Monster Party cart in the mail today!

Well... it's really bizarre to say the least. As expected. What surprised me was how fun it is to play. It's definitely way more fun than it might look in videos. I only intended to test the cartridge but ended up playing it for half an hour. The baseball bat mechanic is surprisingly enjoyable.

Edit: @daydreaming: haven't you region modded your NES? It's really simple. Or maybe you don't want to? I can understand that too.

I haven't really delved into that but if it's simple, I'll check it out, thanks!

You literally just cut off one of the legs on the lockout chip. No soldering or anything like that. Some say you should then connect it to ground, but I didn't do that and haven't had any issues at all. Just google "disable NES lockout" or something and you'll find plenty of guides.

If you get serious about importing NTSC games though, getting a US NES is definitely recommended since some NTSC games doesn't run well on PAL systems. Mendel Palace for example simply crashes. Or at least the Famicom version, Quinty, does on my PAL systems. But if you only plan on maybe playing the odd NTSC game here and there it's perfectly fine for the most part.

I'll definitely try it. As long as there's no chance of harming the console, I have no problem with it. Wish I could do the same with my 3DS. :p

Hm, Mendel Palace is a good one, but I'm not sure it's worth a second console for me. Maybe if I had more space, haha. Thanks for letting me know, though.

Haven't played it, but if it has the same types of boss battles that the first game does it'll be pretty hard to play unless you know Japanese.

The first game has these word-battle types of boss battles where the boss selects a picture among several, then you have to select a picture from the remaining ones that begins with whatever syllable the previous picture ended with. So let's say the boss chose a picture of a cat, since I know cat is called "neko" in Japanese. You would have to select a picture of something that begins with "ko".

I could never get past that myself. I guess it's a good way of learning some Japanese words though if you really tried. :)

Thats a lock then :D

On hard to find famicom, how much should i expect to pay for Doki Doki Yuuenchi?

Looks pretty fun, sounds good, and apparently is what they used as a base for Trolls in crazyland?

King Kong 2 is KICKASS. It's a lot like Jackal or Ai Senshi Nicol. Level based overhead action adventure, huge levels later on.

When in Japan, and I picked up this game.. I also bought one of those Portable Famicom thingies... it worked, but it felt so cheap...

So I plugged in King Kong 2 in the Pocket Fami, and put it in my Toilet sized bathroom in my apartment. Every time I took a crap, I would play King Kong 2.. I was thinking about posting maps on the walls and inner door as I figured out the layout of the levels, but I never did.

Anyway, It's a shit game with a lot of shit content.... and I wouldn't have it any other way.
It was the only game I ever played while in the toilet... I will return to you someday, King Kong 2...

My favourite pickup ever, in preparation of the Analogue NT - two totally mint, genuine NES dog bones. Neither of them look used at all, other one of them was still in its original plastic bag (I put the bag on after taking the picture, will use the other one as long as it lasts). Both for a total of $70 in an eBay auction.

Those are yummy.

Just wanted to say I'm getting ready to place an order for some nesrgb boards. If someone is interested in having the mod done feel free to pm me.

So, HaL64 and I decided to go hunting today. He's too slow to post on GAF, so I'll share the ridiculousness. Right as we are walking into a place, this couple is walking into the store with three crates of games. He stops them, and they sell it all to him for $100:

Fucking ridiculous. Sorry, didn't get a great picture.

Some highlights:

  • Mega Man 3
  • Karnov
  • Blaster Master
  • Rampage
  • Robocop
  • Metal Gear
  • Wizards and Warriors 2
  • Rambo (with instructions)
  • Sunset Riders (pretty valuable game for the SNES)
  • Mario World (two copies)
  • Genesis Model one with a 32X attached
  • Genesis Model 2 with Sega CD attached
Pretty good day. All in pretty good condition. Little dirty, but not a lot of physical damage to most of it.

Oh wow! That's like less than 2 dollars per item there...

Where do you typically go hunting?

Is it still possible to find this kind of stuff at garage sales or is that time long gone?

I am having a lot of trouble against the Grim Reaper in Castlevania 3.

To anybody who is knowledgeable of that game, any tips? No matter how hard I try it seems like it just comes down to luck and there is no discernible pattern like every other boss in the game.

^nice! some gems in there...
but goddamn, hero steals the show again with that haul. i pulled half that at a craigslist one day and it made my month, that's incredible

Garage sales and yard sales these days seems to be mostly PS2 and Xbox games and such, and not very often older stuff. Sometimes you can get lucky though. But other collectors typically also keep an eye on when and where yard sales happen and go there when they open, so you have to be quick.

I need to start carrying at least 80 bucks on me.

I never carry cash, and HaL64 didn't have much on him. I had to run to an ATM. There was a Wal-Mart right there, get inside, and like some bad fucking joke the ATM was out of order. Bank nearby was out of business, but luckily the ATM was left behind and functioning.

Oh wow, thats some sitcom level crazy! Glad it worked out.

got a complete maxi15 for $80 not to shabby also picked up mermaids of atlantis and tagin dragon to take a couple more rare games off my list and monster in my pocket and ultimate stuntman to take off the rad games list

Got some NTSC carts in the mail today.

Three Capcom classics and also Abadox.

They were all pretty dirty and had stickers etc but they cleaned up real nicely. It's really rewarding to see the dirt/sticker residue come right off like that. :D

The Abadox cart is a bit yellowed though, and I couldn't completely get rid of the writing on the front, but it was also really cheap. It appears to have been a rental cart because the back and front were full of stickers with the name of the rental place. And the pins were very dirty too.

Anyone have any good tips on getting rid of tough to remove marker like that? Willow also had some writing on the front but I got rid of that pretty easily. I don't really care that much in this case since it's yellowed as well, but for future reference. :)

Edit: Oh and I just checked my list and apparently with these games that puts me over 100 NES games! :D

I have had good luck with using a dry erase marker and tracing over the permanent marker and wiping it off.

Willow is an awesome game and one of the best unknown gems on the system.

I'll have to look up what that's called in Swedish and go buy some then. Thanks for the tip. :)

I haven't played much of Willow yet but it has started out very interesting. It was of course Chrontendo that made me aware of it so I know it's really good. It's looks and feels a lot like A Link to the Past oddly enough. I wonder if Nintendo was inspired by it when creating ALTTP.

Interestingly it looks a little blurry on my TV, which is one of those 100/120hz CRT TVs. Those aren't very optimal for retro gaming in general but it usually only looks a bit blurry when the screen is scrolling in games etc. I'm guessing Willow does something with the graphics every other frame to create that sort of watercolor look and that it is that which is making it look blurry.

More people need to talk about Abadox.

Nasume's 1st game ever I believe? And a difficult one at that - don't recall ever seeing a downward scrolling shooter anywhere else, to be honest.

What was the story w Natsume, I seem to remember EGM or Nintendo Power or someone said they were form from ex-Konami and Capcom folks at the time - or something?

I played Shatterhand and Shadow of the Ninja for the first time a couple months ago, I was really impressed. They were just the kind of games I like the most on the NES. Great, straightforward action games. They have some rockin' soundtracks that really remind of the sound Konami was using on the NES.

Also did a quick run-through of Castlevania III the other day, and damn, still the best CV game imo.

Hmm, It would be interesting to know this. I wouldn't be surprised if there were some former Konami people behind their NES games.
