NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

After playing Cocoron and seeing how Kitamura's games are basically evolved versions of Mega Man I am DYING to own Little Samson.

There's no way I'm paying current eBay prices, though =[

Should've picked up a complete Lickle when I had the chance.

We're all going to miss the days when games in Japan were reasonable prices compared to their American counterparts. It seems like every day I check on a Japanese version of an expensive US game, the price has increased $20.

Good job! Joker is best dealt with regular punches, taking advantage of the fact that he can't shoot you if you're close because of his comically long gun and that he passes through you without incident while he blinks after taking damage. You also have to know how far away from him to be so that the lightning doesn't hit you.

I'm really curious to see what you think of Dynamite Batman. I don't like the gameplay much at all. It's like a really zoomed in run 'n gun with bad, bad weapon choices.
I tried to find the best way to avoid the lightning and it made a huge difference as I was able to beat him better though still took some damage.

From what I seen it looks to be a completely different game in terms of gameplay.

Maybe someone in here can answer this: do japanese cart versions of Ice Hockey and Bubble Bobble exist or are those games disk system exclusive?

If you're willing to let it go cheap to a GAFfer lemme know :(

I actually have a buyer already, so was just interested in what I should suggest as the price. Also, probably using the money to buy stuff I miss in my colection like Ufouria, Panic Restaurant etc, so dont really want to let it go much below current prices. Definitely dont want to rip-off anybody either though, which is why I am asking.

Why are people paying $100 for a Little Samson repro? The repro isn't rare. Just buy an Everdrive. How stupid are people?

Price looks to be about $700-$800, going by completed auctions. Awful!

Holy shit! While I like that this collecting hobby is getting more traction (so that I have people to discuss with), it seriously hurts the wallet!

Darn was worth a shot. Lemme know if it falls through.

This is my trigger point on collecting. It's utterly fucking idiotic that people would pay high prices for repros. Stupid, stupid.

If you're still looking for another buyer and came up with a price, send me a PM.

What? Why are people making repros of commercial carts? Why is Little Sampson currently going for over $1000? I thought $200 was ridiculous for NES/SNES games. This is getting obscene.

Edit: Looked back a page and saw all the Castlevania talk. I just wanted to throw my opinion out and say I love Dracula X. Rondo of Blood is fantastic and all, but I prefer the SNES one. I even prefer Dracula X to Super Castlevania IV.

Because that's what a repro is?

I think people like having the cart in their collection even if it has to be a repro until they can get the real thing.

Repros are great for homebrew, hacks, and fan translations, but it feels a little gross using them for commercial releases to me.

My man.

I would answer by saying that if it's not reproducing an original release then it's not a reproduction. hacks, home brew and translations on carts are all cool things but surely don't count as reproductions by definition.

Having said that I know the term "repro" gets slung around as a catch-all to describe all aftermarket cart releases.

So I was burning the midnight oil last night watching videos of all those too-high-price NES titles. A few games surprised me - Bubble Bobble 2 looks pretty nice and sounds great! Jetsons looks very reminiscent of Rescue Rangers (which I love), with some great music too... and I've always loved that show's 60's futurism "googie" style.

But a few, I scratched off my list. Power Blade 2 being the biggest culprit. I LOVED the original, the varied and unique environments and the large, nonlinear stages. But the second one seems to have axed the nonlinearity in favor of straightforward stages, and the bosses are all a palette swapped dragon, the music isn't as good, and the levels seem to lack character, instead being all generic dark factory-type settings. Has anyone played Power Blade 2 and what do they think?

Anybody know what the going rate is for a loose Famicom cartridge of Castlevania (Akumajo Dracula) now? I just picked one up at a local store for $50, which seemed like a good deal compared to prices I've seen in the past. There's only one copy of the cartridge on eBay right now, and it's a CIB for $300.

For those who don't know: Castlevania / Akumajo Dracula was originally a Famicom Disk System release only in Japan, but had a cartridge version released for the Famicom late in the system's life in 1993. Because it was released so late, it suffered the same fate that late North American releases like Little Samson or Panic Restaurant had; low production runs and low sales. The Legend of Zelda also received a late cartridge release to tie into the release of the AV Famicom, but by all accounts it sold much better due to Nintendo advertising it pretty heavily.

Seems like you did all right. That's cheaper than what it's been going for on Yahoo Auctions for months with the last cart only sold being the only one that really sold in that range at 6,250 yen. Everything else was over 7,000 and generally swayed more towards 8,000+.

Eve back in like 2001 when I first started on Famicom stuff (via Tsr's NES archive and other geocities sites) Akumajou Dracula was considered a small 'holy grail' cart for Fami collectors. Likely because of the easy mode, Japanese like their games easy. And that was when games were literally $1 each or less for most titles.

You can get it for $150 boxed in Japan though if you're lucky. It's not that rare, just popular.

Disk version is better though. Saving, and the proper ending where it says your file name played Simon (to fit the playing an old movie' theme).

Do or die time before I pounce on some CIB NES game ebay auctions..

Guys.. Do I keep buying specific CIB games, or do I do my whole collection a favor and just go Bitbox? I love having them boxed in their original form, on the shelf... but they're much more expensive to acquire, and the cardboard .. it just wasn't made to last (though all of mine are now in box protectors)

So yeah... considering expunging my boxes and just for consistency and longevity's sake, setting all my carts up with bitboxes and printed artwork.

What do you guys think? What should I do? Part of me wants to own a bunch of CIB games... another part of me just wants to put them on the shelf with a decent looking case for the cart and instructions. I feel like I might be wasting my time and money going after the boxes.. and it also feels like .. where do I stop buying CIB.. when does it end? Just getting the carts and instructions, if possible, feels more doable.

Would love to hear your opinions.

Thanks fellas!

edit: SNES CIB is already a no go, and god the prices... Perfectly happy with just the carts. Same for N64. Sega Genesis / Megadrive, I can't stand not to have the case... And NES... I'm somewhere in the middle.

edit 2: Uh oh, bitboxes don't hold NES games in their dust covers.... Hmmm... Not liking that.. Not liking that one bit.

I went the BitBox route myself. They're cheaper than original boxes. They're more solid so you don't have to baby your boxes or buy/deal with box protectors. That also means the boxes are going to last longer. They feel professionally-done unlike UGCs. The prices for their printing service is more than reasonable as they don't even profit off their prints, they just use them to promote the boxes. And you're more likely to have your entire collection consistent across all games as chasing down original boxes loose is a pain. So you won't have some games in boxes and other games not in boxes.

I guess I also give zero fucks about dust covers, so that wasn't even a consideration. These things close up fairly tight so the dust covers wouldn't serve any functional purpose in a BitBox, they'd just be another obstacle between you and putting your game into the system.

God god.. I thought I was going to win these auctions... Ouch.

Crash n the Boys just sold for 90 dollars CIB.
Kiwi Kraze for 60

Christ.

Yeah.. I think I might be done with CIB.. Holy shit.. And I'm looking at some SNES games right now, cart only.. Looking like they'll sell 50 or 60 or maybe even 70 each. Wow. This is getting out of control.

My dust covers issue is... well, they just look so darn iconic in their dust covers.

But thanks for chiming in on Bitboxes. I'm leaning toward giving thema go, or maybe something else down the road.

CIB is expensive. I am exactly you, Polio, when it comes to what systems I like to have cib games. I'm in the middle on NES. I am collecting the black box games CIB a d going after some others that are either cheap or genuinely great games (or both, ie, Faxanadu). I'd go for some "sets" if I were you. You're right about "where does it end" ... Eventually you're going to end up with way too much.

Genesis is the only system worth CIB and only the plastic cases, not the cheaper cardboard boxes they switched to.

Nintendo and their cardboard boxes for NES, SNES and N64 sucked.

They're just too delicate for long term storage. I know those plastic covers exist, but it's just a hassle when you want to play the game.

I have zero interest in CIB for my collection. I'd eventually like to box them, but I don't need the original boxes. The prices on those is just ridiculous.

So, i've only just recently started collecting Famicom thanks to Game Center CX (Which is the famicom games i've been buying)

My SO and I just finally tested are Disk System, and it worked like a charm! We only spent about $100 on it, and it was complete with everything in the box, plus 3 disks, which had Pachicom/DK Jr, Ice Climbers/Mahjong, and the Kaettekita Mario Bros.

Of course, well we had fun playing that, i really ended up just playing an hour of Metro Cross. That has to be one of my favorite Namco titles now.

Anyways, the real question i wanted to ask was, what are some of the best FDS games you can play without knowing Japanese, and weren't released in some form in the US?

Really awesome one I enjoy a lot that I'm amazed didn't get released here is Ai Senshi Nicol / Love Warrior Nicol from Konami. Really great top-down adventure game with a sci-fi theme. Plays like a more polished version of the top-down areas from Blaster Master. Colorful graphics and a trademark quality Konami soundtrack.

Plus, dat intro

Sweet, thanks guys.

You've helped me realize the futility in going after CIB.

I mean, I've been waiting 6 months or a year on some of these CIB, hoping for a good deal on games I really wanted, to come along. Eff dat. I'm going to just get a nice looking cart already and enrich my collection at lower costs.. For the price of one CIB, I could get four to five or more good looking carts.

And then if I happen to come across an irresistible deal on a CIB of a much wanted game, nothing's stopping me from getting it.

Excellent.
