NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

So Bubble Bobble 2 was always expensive for NES games. Mighty Final Fight for $7.99 though? Damn, why didnt I have sense to clean up then? I was actually still playing old school on and off in those days.

I'm glad I got the things I got during that time, but I definitely wish I'd doubled down on getting a lot of the stuff that's taken off since then =[

Ugh everyone continually talking about the AV famicom is making me think it is about time to get one, 72 pin connector on my NES is on its lats legs even after cleaning and whatnot. Just a few questions about the AV fami:

1. Heard some stuff about not using the japanese power supply in america or something, but that a genesis psu would work. I have a gen 2 genesis power supply, is that one that should be fine for an AV famicom?

2. Until I figure out about RGB modding it, can I use it with the same SNES/N64/GCN composite cable? Pictures make it look like it is the same cable slot.

3. All I need to play NES games on it is a 72 to 60 pin connector correct? Is there a best place to get one or just anything on eBay should be fine?

1. I can't speak to this one and have been scolded for using my Japanese power supply in the USA. It's worked fine so far though. I may get a step down soon.

2. You can use the composite cable from any of those systems with it. Note that the system new did not include one. Then when you DO get it RGB modded, the same RGB cable for SNES / N64 will work for it. I only have one and leave it plugged into my hub and swap it on the system when I need to.

3. Yes, and this is the one you want. And this is the best price you'll see it for.

The AV Famicom vs the regular Famicom have different... heights of pin inside the cart slot? Other adapters need to be plugged in slightly loosely to work on the AV Famicom. I have this one on mine and it works perfectly, fully plugged in, every time.

1. The original Famicom adapter will work on a U.S outlet at the expense of running a little more warm. I don't believe the Gen type 2 adapter is compatible. I recommend just getting a stepdown converter for $17.

3. Any pin adapter will work or crack open or find a cheap Gyromite and use that one.

Luckily with external brick power supplies the voltage difference only affects the adapter and not the system.

The difference in voltage is minimal (between Japan and the US), but it will run hotter than normal which means the power supply will die out sooner than it would normally die out. Probably not even that big a deal, but using a US power supply that provides the voltage that the AV Fami needs as has been listed many, many times over the last few pages will eliminate that issue without the need for a step down converter.

Is there any reason for buying the AVif you're going to rgbmod it anyway? The OG famicom is so much nicer.

The ability to use any US NES controller with a cable longer than 5 cm. The tradeoff is no mic for Zelda.

My wife thinks I'm crazy when I just put on NES soundtracks while I work or am reading stuff online. But they honestly had some of the coolest music ever. There are so many awesome NES soundtracks I've just recently discovered, like Akira. All time favorite has to be Batman by Sunsoft.

You can always buy one of these for the Famicom port. My one issue with the OG Famicom is the yellowing. Twin Famicom wins the famicom beauty pageant.

I have an AV Famicon that I love, but it is not modded unfortunately. How hard would it be to do it myself? Has anybody here experience with it?

I swear I read somewhere that it's hard to mod an original Famicom due to lack of space in the case. I may have made that up though

Mine is the AV Famicom though. I am sure its hard to mod the original yeah, but would guess its a bit easier with the AV one.

Yeah I have an AV Famicom modded. Pretty straightforward to do I believe although I must confess I got someone else to do mine

I need to look into that!

Anyways, how do you guys store the Famicom carts? With the Nes-carts, I just use the dustsleeve or box whenever I have that, but have no good solution for the famicom-carts yet, so would be interesting to hear!

No joke, cassette storage racks work ridiculously well for Famicom carts.

Also fits Master System and Genesis carts. And maybe MSX carts too?

You can tell Nintendo consiously copied the dimensions of a cassette case. It's identical. And they did call them game cassettes in Japan...

All my import stuff is CIB. It's gonna be a sad day when I break that tradition. Probably would for a cheap Fami Contra or Lickle.

Been thinking the same. I finally broke out my NES from storage last night and my newish 72 pin connector has a ninja grip on my carts. I can't imagine putting a Fami converter in there. It'll never come out. Plus, all the FDS talk here...

Is Famicom Contra rare? I've seen many copies of it floating around in Canada. I got mine for a couple bucks...

lol, remember when old games were worthless?

It would probably hurt all our souls to know how much old shit has just been thrown away. I know a couple people personally who have horror stories about their parents throwing away their NES shit when they went away to college. And then think about places like EB Games tossing the shit when it became worthless.

Some heartbreaking stuff.

What's funny is how GS, which bought EB, is now trying to get retro stuff again.

Those idiots should've have held on them, but video gaming is such a new medium, even they couldn't have predicted the retro market.

Bastards!

I used to own NTSC Contra and now it's 30-50 bucks :(

Why did I sell it?

That game had a huge print run, so I don't why it's so expensive now. It was in the single digits when I sold it lol.
All Contra is NTSC ;)

It's in demand. Super Mario Bros 3 sold 17 million copies and costs more than most games. People what the best games they don't care how rare they are.

Not that rare, but expensive in box, and very expensive CIB with original collector card

Which makes sense since it's the best version of the best game on the Famicom/NES.
Indeed it is the best version. It's funny.. I've never owned the NES cart, but I got the Famicom version for a steal. There's a wierd phenomenon where the Contra NES cart is known for what it is and they charge $30+ for it in retro stores, but I've seen many boxes of loose Famicom carts that people don't understand, and there's a copy or two of Famicom Contra that they'll give you for a couple bucks.

I'm sure if it were held up to the light of eBay, it'd be in reverse.

There's a pretty recent new translation patch for Famicom Contra that I've thrown on my Everdrive. That's the version to play ... Unless you're fluent in Japanese. They even do their own animated flames in the western Contra logo on the title screen, like the Famicom version.

If someone hacked in new pics of my boy RD-008 and matched the original Probo manual story, that would be cool.

Holy shit are Gun-Nac and Panic Restaurant a lot of fun! Playing on my friend's compact flash cartridge loaded with tons of ROMs the other day... great looks like more games to add to my wishlist :P
