NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

So my www.retrogamingcables.co.uk SNES SCART cables are stuck in Chicago's customs the last week: ISC CHICAGO IL (USPS).

I read online they can be stuck there for weeks/months and sometimes lost, lol. There is something "royally wrong" about Customs/USPS in Chicago from what I read. Great, lol. This has not turned out to be a good idea...should have had retro console accessories on ebay make me some since she's in USA.

Rockman 4 finally arrived this morning so my collection is now complete :)

I'm excited to play these as i've only really played 2 before.

1 was ~$35 and 6 was ~$25, the others were around $15 each.

Megaman vs Rockman pricing...

I know not everyone likes pricechart, but here is average price for Megaman loose:

$70 - Megaman 1
$28 - Megaman 2
$21 - Megaman 3
$33 - Megaman 4
$80 - Megaman 5
$45 - Megaman 6

I've had an A/V Fami and a nice joystick sitting at customs at JFK since Monday. We'll see how long it takes to get out of there. Excited to get my hands on it...

I have the MM games for NES and I'm not big on duplicates but I may have to get this set. Maybe after I score most of the other stuff I want and I'm just looking for something to buy in order to scratch the collecting itch...

I'm glad I decided to collect famicom over NES xD The famicom carts are much prettier too.

The USPS said they delivered 3 packages today, except I only got 1, lol. Is this for real?

I contacted them 20 minutes after and said where my boxes yo.

She said they take a picture of where the boxes get delivered, and they track the GPS coordinates. so she looked it up, and said her "system" was down and they can't locate the GPS coordinates. So she said she'll call the carrier and get back to me ASAP.

It's been a couple hours now since then and no call, so I asked if they had any update and they said they're "still working on it".

How much do you guys want to put down the mailman stole $300 worth of N64 games? LOL!

UPDATE: Mailman called and said there was a loose dog right when he marked hte packages as delivered, so he ran away - lol, and will try again later today. Probably a true story as the neighbor has a German shepard, who is very defensive and scary, lol. I just find it hilarious that a dog scared the mailman away, it's true, they hate mail folk.

Shit. I still have my copy of MM5 with a near-perfect box and manual.

So very tempted to sell it...hmm.

Do you believe, over time, these items will only increase, or decrease in value?

Doing quite a bit of NES/SNES/N64 shopping the last month (I've probably spent $2000, out of control), I look at the historical charts for things I'm buying and their trends are always going up (or holding value).

That's not to say they're an investment, but many games doubled in value in the last 2-3 years. I can't see them continuing that, but it's interesting to see. How supply and demand are interacting with each other.

Congrats! I am missing 1 and 6, and I dont know if I'll find em for a decent price these days. :(

Just bite the bullet and get them. Mega man games always hold their value and they're great value for money to boot.

I always tell people who are getting into SNES collecting to get Super Metroid, Turtles in Time and Zelda LttP. "But they're expensive..." - "Who cares? You'll enjoy those games for years and years." - and they always have.

Absolutely, I actually never played Super Metroid (blasphemy?). I picked up metroid 1 on NES and Super Metroid on SNES. TMNT4 is expensive but I found a copy worth owning.

Now Zelda, I've been searching for a couple weeks. I can't find a clean label/clean cart version I'd pay for. It's basically sub-par loose, or CIB.

I only need Mega Man 6 to have them all. $45 to complete the MM NES collection suits me! Odd it never got a pal release

It's the easiest one as well(unless you play MM2 on "Normal", but no sane gamer does that, lol).

Oh snap. I started playing MM2 a couple nights ago and defeated 3 of the levels/bosses with ease and wondered - was it this easy as a kid? Guess you want me to utilize hard...

Mega Man 6 easy, really? I've always thought that 5 was the easiest, followed by 2. The first one is the hardest by far.
6 wasn't that bad!

Only reason people say 2 is easy because they choose normal, which is actually easy mode. I never choose normal for that game.

I didn't know you played it on easy.=p Normal sucks, it's Difficult or nothing for that game. I have no idea why Capcom added that when Rockman 2 didn't have difficulties.

Isn't the western "difficult" the standard japanese difficulty? Maybe they thought western gamers can't handle that.

For me it must be some kind of muscle memory, since alongside with Mario 1 and 3, Mega Man 2 was the game I played the most as a kid. Nowadays I have Rockman 2, but even that seems like it's not really that hard. (Metal blade OP)

But then again, I'm somehow an anomaly - I've always been very good at Battletoads, which many people consider to be one of the hardest NES games - but then again, I'm not really not a very good player in general. I guess some games just suit me well.

Yep, you're correct on that.

Mega Man 2 seems to be everyone's fav, though I liked 3 and 4 a lot too!

Absolutely. Japan (or USA?) dumbed down many games for Americans. We can't handle SMB Lost Levels, we can't handle FF2/FF3 on their correct difficulty.

Has anyone played an English translated FF4/FF6 and noted the difficulty difference or the translation was good enough for me to try?

Thanks!

It'll have to wait after I pay off the hospital bills for the twins which are high but not putting us in the poor house or anything. Soon I hope.

Yeah Mega Man 2 on normal is dead simple. Tbh I don't find 1 hard at all although I have played it a lot. I still need to give 5 proper attention too. Bought it recently and it got put in my backlog. I'll get 6 soon and give it a bash. Glad it's not too tricky.

A while back I asked for some finishable fun NES games recommendations for me to do playthoughs of for my channel but I've lost the post. So I'll ask again for suggestions. So far I've done Mario, Castlevania, Mega Man, Mario Lost Levels, Batman, Turtles... what would be fun to do next that won't be too tricky?

Well, you listed some of the hardest games on the system, so I don't think anything after that will be too tricky for you. But here's some of my favourites I usually recommend:

- Kirby's adventure
- Star Tropics
- Bucky O'Hare
- Journey to Silius

Fun fact: the version I have (Famicom) has lots of different music. I don't know if these tracks were lifted from the arcade version or why did they bother to rewrite some of them for western release.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QllOiXFpigA

Speaking of Argos no Senshi, I finally managed to beat Ligar with some heavy leveling in the last stage. No speedruns, but I was able to clear a game that I first played as a child so I'm happy. Always thought that it's a much better game than people say and definitely one that's still quite affordable.

Are the enemies/bosses any different? Or is it just the music?

They are the same as far as I remember.

Of course the PAL version is infamously made more difficult due to the fact that it had less memory than the Japanese and the US versions, making it so that you can only get 1023 Tone (your attack power) and Last (defense/hit points) whereas in other versions you can get 4095 (?). This meant that in the PAL version you could only get 8 hitpoints and didn't have as much attack power, making the last area and the last boss notoriously difficult.

This is what we had to deal with back in the day, alongside the slowdown mess that was games like Castlevania, Mega Man and Mega Man 2. Only later they bothered to optimize games for PAL speeds...

Ninja Gaiden, Contra(both which I did no death runs), Bucky o Hare, Batman Return of the Joker.

Journey to Silius if you can put up with only 3 continues!

Yeah I can get through some tricky ones just felt like a break! Something a little mellower. It's annoying my copy of Bucky is PAL and it runs too fast on my NTSC setup so I'll have to grab another copy.

Timu you'll know the answer to this. Which is easier, Shatterhand or Journey to Silius?

Shatterhand.

Journey to Silius has difficult to avoid enemies, some tough bosses, extremely limited health pick ups, no extra lives and you have to make wise choices with the weapons you obtain from mini bosses to conserve ammo since ammo pick ups aren't that common either(though more so than health pick ups).

Plus the last stage will put your platforming skills to the test. And like Batman you have to fight 2 final bosses at the end, but health doesn't regenerate to full either between them, so good luck!

Personally I would say Shatterhand is the harder one. The first couple stages of Silius / Raf World aren't too hard to begin with, plus even the later bosses have pretty set patterns and weak spots. Last couple of stages are very hard platforming, true, but I've always thought of Shatterhand/Solbrain as more .. "random" in its difficulty. Just my gut feeling.

Shatterhand is probably easier to no death though...Journey is nearly impossible to no death to due unavoidable enemies, and I don't plan to no death it either, hell even a 1CC is tough. It wouldn't surprise me if Raf World is easier than Journey due to being the Japanese version.

Shatterhand could probably no death after a month or so of playing. Doesn't that game have unlimited continues as well?

We should put MM3 on an upcoming vote list, given the current price. Cheapest of the bunch and one of the best as well. I feel like MM2 wouldn't garner many votes. Great game but everyone has played it. MM3 maybe a little less so.

I love MM 3 but some of the slow down in that game drives me mad. Still be up for having it on the vote though for sure

JTS is actually the only game I can no death run almost every time now.

...I've played a lot of JTS.

I'd say the Japanese and pal version are identical in difficulty. They did a great job optimising that game for 50hz. Obviously the 60hz version is still superior though.

You can get 72-pin NES to 60-pin Famicom adapters on ebay. Just make sure you don't get the opposite.

Yep, this is exactly how I do it. Works flawlessly.

I'm glad the eternal Mailman Vs. Dog feud is still alive and well.

I bet that took months to do.=p

Then again I haven't played it as much since 2012 so things could be different.
I've basically played it since I was a kid, so try years. :P
Although I didn't really give it a good try until some years ago, but once I beat it it just clicked. It probably did take a couple of months of on and off playing until I could no death run it after that though. The only part that still give me trouble sometimes is the falling platforms in stage 4. There are also some enemies which are impossible to avoid in one or two places, although it's not too bad.

It's probably my favourite NES game so that's why I've played it so much.

Ghosts'n Goblins
The Disney Capcom games
Battletoads
Double Dragon I and II and III

When we're talking about an unmodded Famicom AV hooked up to a 1080p set with a pretty nice scaler, what kind of loss in video quality can I expect compared to one with modded RGB? Is it little enough that most people don't notice or care? What are the key differences there?

Double Dragon 3 starts you with 1 life until you reach the 4th stage where you can use 1 continue after everyone dies in Stages 4 or 5. And stage 5 is tough. I did beat it without dying last year for a youtube playthrough, but it was a tough one to do due to stage 5.

Although I have no input on upscalers, but generally I would actually say based on my experience that for the NES/AV Famicom the RGB mod makes the biggest difference when you upgrade from composite. The jump in sharpness, vibrance, picture quality, it's astounding. It's definitely one that you'd notice the easiest compared to composite.

I would like to throw out, i fyou have the means to purchase and use it, a hi-def NES (HDN). It's HDMI out, internally upscaled to 1080p with no lag introduced, and completely digital.

RGB to a framemeister is an analog to digital conversion. There is less noise and no lag introduced with an HDN. The HDN is my favorite retro modded console right now.
