NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Ah thought you must. It took me forever to figure out capturing old consoles well.

My yt is www.youtube.com/hugzi got a few respectable game plays on there amongst other stuff. Nothing to your no death standard though!
Ha, I wish it was a standard for me since I don't have too many no death runs(just 12 right now) and as I play the toughest games expect more deaths(Battletoads, Ninja Gaiden 3, Bayou Billy, Ghost N Goblins, etc., will kick my ass)...however 1CCs are still possible! I want at least 50 no death runs.=p

Nice channel BTW.

Yeah, Volgarr definitely looked that hard to me. Have to complete a several-minute-long stage with plenty of gotcha-traps and no checkpointing. It's balanced out by infinite continues (as far as I could ascertain from watching slowbeef stream it), but progression can be really sluggish.

I have good news -- if you want to get the good ending in Volgarr, you can sort of forget about that "infinite continues" thing -- the good ending requires beating the game in one sitting, without using any saves. Forget that, that game is crushingly difficult to even beat one level, and as fun a classic Rastan-style game as it is, making the game even harder than Rastan and then intentionally putting in a very limited save system that you can't even use if you want a decent ending is inordinately cruel. It's not 1990 anymore, games should have saving now. Volgarr is inordinately cruel.

Shatterhand will be a big part of my Friday night, I think. Anyone start digging into it yet?

I felt the same way. It's too bad, as otherwise it's amazing in every way.

Yup! Funny story about that, a few years back when I was still actively looking for NES games, I had almost bought Final Mission off of ebay for dirt cheap even before I had a Famicom, it was something like $10. The next day I went to the flea market and found S.C.A T. for $5 *lol*

lol yeah I got mine for 3 bucks. I almost did a back flip when I saw it lol. Had to pull the biggest poker face ever, and kinda waffle through the games first. Then before he could even finish his sentence on how much they were each, I blurted out "yes" lol.

At any rate, i'm off Friday too, so that'll be Shatterhand starting as well.

i know we differ on notions of challenge, but yeah...i adore Rastan, and wanna spend more time with this one but goddamn is it unforgiving. didn't even know about the ending thing, yikes.

I only played Volgarr for one evening, but was able to come to level 4 i think, where i got destroyed by the boss. Didnt seem impossibly hard compared to old castlevanas etc imo.

I'm not sure if I would say that Volgarr is full of "gotcha traps"; it's a very fair game. Probably easier than a lot of NES classics like Castlevania 1, 3, and Shatterhand too. Not to say it's not a solidly challenging game, but it certainly isn't absurdly difficult. (It's probably a good deal easier than Holy Diver though.)

Arcade-length games don't need saving (but Volgarr does allow you to pick up from where you left off if you're playing on the standard, infinite continue route, so it does have saving). The limited-lives route doesn't have saving because beating it in one sitting is, of course, part of the challenge.

Volgarr is a great title (just needed jaggies on the sprites to complete the effect). If you go through the normal route it's not that hard. If you take the hard route (with limited lives) that's when it gets hard. I've yet to beat the hard route personally.

Just ordered my first Famicom games, I figure I should get a couple cheap ones to test out my Analogue NT's Famicom slot when it arrives next month. I'm eventually going to get the Everdrive N8, so I didn't want to buy anything expensive.

Ended up ordering a couple Konami Japanese Exclusives: King Kong 2, and Hi No Tori, and threw in Murder on the Mississippi as well as it was only a buck and the cart itself was really cool looking (I figure I can try to stumble through the adventure using a walkthrough).

Anyone play any of these? King Kong 2 looks pretty cool, and I heard that Hi No Tori was a pretty good sidescroller. Looks like both require no knowledge of Japanese to enjoy, which is perfect for me.

King Kong is one of the best games on the system. Well, like top 50. Seriously it's kickass.

It's an overhead sprawling action adventure a lot like Ai Senshai Nicol. And just like Nicol it is classy, solid, and has great music.

Hi no Tori is a bit rougher, but still fun. A typical 1987 platformer, controls are a bit loose, graphics and music nothing particularly special. But it has some interesting mechanics.

Just got 8 Bit Music Power in the mail today, but found out it doesn't work with Gyromite Converters. It just shows a blank white screen, so I'm guessing it uses some sort of extra chip (VRC6?). I am kind of surprised given Gimmick! will work with it.

I guess I can only put off the inevitable for so long. -_- At least my Birthday is next week so I'll have some extra money coming in.

Haha, I'm sure we've all had our "back up slowly and run" purchases before.. I had that with my $25 copy of Tengen Tetris that I got about 4 years ago.

So someone out there makes a Famicom to Playstation controller adapter, which frankly blows my mind a bit.

Tempted to try to find a mint-ish Playstation Controller to try it out.

Fake Edit: Like this one I found on eBay, new in box for $35:

Can anyone recommend a Famicom to NES controller adapter?

I bet that thing has some lag...

I don't like chunky controllers for precision platform games, especially from the 8 & 16 bit era. Never liked the Gamecube controller for Sonic collection, but i guess it all depends on what your grew up using.

Great story!

For me, after having totally enjoyed Forgotten Worlds on Genesis, there were these two other games that intrigued me but I didn't know much about them. Hyper Dyne Side Arms on PCE / TG-16 and S.C.A.T. for NES.

Here's another look at FM / S.C.A.T.

Eventually I'd like to pick up the HAL-developed Ghostbusters 2 for the Famicom but holy shnikies is it expensive. It's also one of the few games I've searched for specifically that seems to have more CIB copies than cart-only copies.

Anyone tried using the 8 Bit Music Power cart on an Analogue NT? Mine won't run—it just gives me a blank white screen. I don't know if this is due to (1) an incompatibility with the software and hardware, (2) a bad cart (the board appears to be slightly curved), or (3) my Analogue NT's Famicom slot failing in general (I've been having a lot of glitching/freezing problems with my Disk System and other FC carts over the past few days). I was hoping to review the cart for USgamer, but it seems like that ain't happening.

Side Arms brings back memories of riding my bike to the local convenience store and playing the arcade version, along with the Play-Choice 10 version of SMB2. That convenience store always got in some weird games.

It was at a convenience store in Illinois just outside of Chicago where I first got to play Final Fight and the earliest four Neo Geo games, including Magician Lord. I often saw Play-Choice 10 units in my area back then.
With Side Arms, I only saw the TG-16 version but I knew an arcade version existed.

i loved side arms, one of the few arcade gms i can beat in a quarter. very macross inspired. w/ section z style gameplay.
romstar auto > little 5 star auto (3 way auto was the pits=D) the speed of the enemy bullets in the tg-16 version wasn't well balanced imo.

the nes play choice 10 was such a rip off. a quarter for 3 or 5mins of play? i'd rather go home and play my nes for free =)

Keep searching. Eventually someone will put it up for a price you want. Check for newly listed.

Update on my toploader: I opened it up, but I don't really know what I'm looking for exactly. And the pins appear fine? I don't know... it's definitely quite different than the front-loader model (obv) which I'm familiar with. I got cold feet and closed it back up. I'll have to mess with it more in the future.

As for Famicom storage, I found these things at a local thrift store. They're awesome.

Talk about being OnPoint, snagged one while I was out today, and they work pretty good for bare Genesis/MegaDrive carts too!

What is the going rate for this? I basically just picked it up for 40$, which seemed ok. Not great looking though.

Maybe you can help me out.

I played a game as a kid, I believe on NES, that was a SHMUP of some kind....I think.

You played as a dragon? Or maybe some sort of dinosaur? I have super vague memories of it. I think I remember an early level being very blue, but I have no idea.

Help me wizardGAF.

One of the levels is over water.

Ew cart only lol.

Boxed is where it gets expensive.

I'm not sure actually. I feel like if I see it I'll know, but I'll watch more of this one. I think I remember you power up and get more heads? I know you fired more bullets as you power up. Lemme watch a bit more and see if this is it.

EDIT: so this matches what I'm saying, but doesn't look familiar at all. I guess it has to be it though, I feel like it's not. Maybe there wasn't a dragon? Maybe it was some other kind of SHMUP where you weren't a ship?
