NES/Famicom Appreciation Thread

Thanks for the info! So there goes my sensible theory that the problem was with HiDefNes. The RGB NT should be identical enough to the original hardware for this. I too wonder what this cart is doing...

Analogue retweeted a picture of someone running the cart in an Analogue NT. Not sure if it has the HDMI mod installed, but it looks like at least some NTs are playing it.

I saw that photo, but the screen is totally blown out, and even adjusting its levels in Photoshop all I get is white... just like on my NT. Wish the photo had shown some details.

Has anyone heard from Mercurio lately? (The chap that was selling his RGB-modded AV Famicom.)

I was interested in picking up a few carts from him but I see that the Rockman set he was offering was listed and sold on his eBay account before he responded to my Private Message.

Nope, radio silence. Give it time, he'll pop back up.

I'm not trying to be a jerk or anything, it's just rough seeing the carts I want listed today and then sold in the same day for less than he was initially asking for. I would have gladly taken them off his hands. Harrumph.

There's a few things I want from him too. Stay patient, friend. He'll return!

I just got my Famicom up and running! Does anyone have any inexpensive Famicom exclusive game recommendations? :)
King Kong 2, Donald Land (I'd say look it up first to see if it's your kind of game), and Power Blazer (Apparently this goes for more than I thought. It used to be a $5 game). On the pricier side of things, I'd recommend The Quest of Ki, Wai Wai World 2, and Gradius II.

Exciting Boxing - the final Konami famicom game for my collection. I now have every one, in box.

I'll do a family photo at some point, for now here it is with some of his buddies:

Wow congratulations! How long did it take? :)
Depends. I only got serious about completing the set around two years ago.

But I got my first Konami Famicom/FDS game around 20 years ago.

So technically the collection took two decades lol.

Now dive in and swim around in it like Scrooge McDuck.

That Konami collection is really cool.

Had some frustration this week. Sometimes I really wonder what our mail goes through, and its amazing that anything ever makes it without being ruined.

I'm glad it wasn't a rare game that this happened to, but holy crap did the post office do a good job of destroying it. The frustrating part is that this is one of the last 2 games that I needed to complete my set of all Capcom games for the NES, the other is Destiny of an Emperor.

I also sat down and played with my copy of 8-Bit Music Power, I was worried that it might be defective after reading the problems folks were having on here. It didn't work the first time on my AV Famicom, I had to reseat the cart a couple of times before it would boot, but then it was fine. Its a really neat cart though and I'm glad I got it :)

Congrats D.Lo!

Cool accomplishment. Now I dare you to attempt to collect all the Konami games for current gen consoles!
:'(

Eh, it's not a huge deal. I got a refund from the seller (though unfortunately I had to get eBay involved) and I transplanted the PCB into a new case and put on a new label. It says reproduction now but I'm not one of those crazy collectors that needs everything perfect and fresh.

I had to buy a cheap golf game to get a case plus the tools to open up the shell, but it was a fun little project.

My only regret is that I believe I absent-mindedly tossed the PCB from the Golf game...I'm sure someone could have reflashed it or something.

It's surprisingly difficult to find the physical dimensions of a Famicom cartridge online. Bah.

Well, which cart are you trying to size? Someone here might have one handy.

Were you also getting a frozen white screen when it wasn't working?
Might try a few more times tonight with extra persistence. And if it doesn't work, I'll take the chance to play something else! (My setup doesn't always stay plugged in).

It's not a big deal, I just a bit of off time at work and I was gonna start fiddling with some end labels designs I was brainstorming. At this point in time I'll be home in an hour so it's all good. Thanks though.

Does anyone know anything about the AVS? I just saw a blurb about it and a YouTube video demonstrating it. I'm sold. Any idea when it's going to be available? The official website doesn't mention it just yet.

Hyped.

I'm not familiar with the AVS. Link?

Edit: Google searching "AVS" just brings up the prototype NES hardware.

I was just getting a gray screen on mine, the screen flickered, but it was acting like there wasn't a cart inserted at all.

Yeah AVS is the NES prototype. They had one at the Nintendo World Store for a while, very Commodore 64 (but classier).

In classic PSX/Xbox 1 naming fashion, someone has decided to make a HDMI NES redesign with that name as well.

The AVS is an HDMI NES from RetroUSB, see:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MoP60ETqXig

Bunnyboy has been pretty tight-lipped about any particular dates, though. Last solid update was that mass production had begun in China, so I can't imagine it wouldn't be out sometime in 2016.

The AVS is more desirable than other solutions like the Retron because it's not emulation, it's a reproduction of the original NES hardware using an FPGA. (It also won't cost $500-$600 like the Analogue Nt.)

Personally, I've had $200 set aside for months now just waiting for the thing to come out.

Ended up investing my Birthday money on a Twin Famicom. Says it has a replaced belt and it comes bundled with Mario 2 so my fingers are crossed that my retro mind will be blown when it arrives.

Besides that and Murasamejou, I would love to get into playing some of the Konami exclusives for the system.

Did the same but my birthday is next month! Great buy IMO and Mario 2 is pretty satisfying! (Disk had Donkey Kong Jr. on the other side too!) Waiting for it to get back from Baphomet installing the NESrgb board atm though and I can't wait to get it back.:)

I am so hyped. Hope I hear about preorders before missing out.

Okay, I've had the worst luck with Nightmare on Elm Street. First time yesterday I got stuck at one part and just stopped playing. Later on I gave it a 2nd go and made it to the final boss fight but I was too careless with lives and couldn't survive. 3rd time was the weirdest; the order of the houses changed and I've had it happen numerous times where I attack an enemy with a projectile and the projectile went right through their body and didn't count and they push me off over a ledge...

I've had my attack not register very occasionally every other time I've played but this is the first time where it's happened at least 5 times in one go.

I just got a Famicom-to-NES adapter for some US games, but the adapter came as a naked board with no she'll. Wondering if anyone knows the easiest way to put a Famicom shell around it, should I just dremel saw a cart shell to the right size?

Damn, you've pulled ahead of me! :-P

I'm at 19/33. Which ones are you missing still?

Soccer, Tennis, Ice Climber, Kid Icarus, Balloon Fight, Clu Clu Land, Stack Up, DK, DK Jr, DK3, and DK Jr Math (LOL). I have loose carts of most of these (including DK Jr Math) but not the completes. Most of the ones I have left are pretty pricey. I also pretty much only go for the circle seal/hangtab versions so that's even a bit more. I will in all likelihood never own complete Stack Up or DKJM but I will try to score the manuals if I can. What about you?

I saw a project (I think on Nintendo Age) were someone cut or dremeled out an NES cleaning cart and put the converter inside. I have a Gyromite converter and a cleaning kit and have been meaning to try to do one myself. It's a good idea because the cleaning kit has the handle for taking it in and out. The FC carts just fit snugly inside the whole thing - kind of framed in there.

One more notch on the column for defective/DOA cart...
Amiami got back to me asking for video of the failure to start while also showing my order invoice.

Congrats on the Konami set, D.Lo! Looking forward to some kind of feature about this on your website. :D

I'm just going to post this link again:

http://shmuplations.com/megaman/

If you ever cared about Mega Man 1 or 2, this translated interview with A.K. is ridiculously full of great facts about the development of both games. I had scoured the web for information on Mega Man 1 before when I was making my video and there was so little to go on. This blows it wide open! I'm happy that a lot of my assumptions were confirmed.

lol at them running out of space on the cart and copy Mega Man having the same AI as ElecMan. I knew the copy robot fired whenever he crossed one of three positions on the screen and jumped only when you push B, but hadn't made the ElecMan connection. Now I have to guts those blocks away and test it out. I could swear he jumps on his own, but we'll see.

Kitamura made the decisions on pretty much every aspect of the games, from character sprites to level design, music, and sound. Before he left Capcom he told the new director to keep the basic design, make a robot dog and create a prototype 000 robot, lol. Dude is taking credit for everything.

I wonder why that isnt more public knowledge? He doesnt care about the credit I guess?

Also how the hell did I miss out on Shatterhand and Bucky back in the day?!

Protip: Punch bullets.

So after giving the 8-bit Music Power cart more than a few tries, I discovered that I could get it to show the intro with the "Riki" logo for a bit, but then it inevitably crashes after a few seconds.

I found this out after slapping the cartridge against my leg a few times. Yes, seriously. And the more I slapped it, the longer the intro ran for. After a short while the cart only shows the white screen again, but a few more slaps will get it going for a bit again. But it still always eventually crashes after a few seconds. I couldn't get past the intro, except if I pressed the start button. But that only leads to it trying to load the menu and glitches out the same way every time.

The reason I started slapping the cartridge was that I know on the Amiga 500 computers you could sometimes fix RAM bootup errors by dropping the Amiga against the table from a few inches up, which could reseat the RAM chips if that was the problem. So my first theory was that maybe the chips were somehow not properly seated. But bending the PCB slightly seems to also affect it. So my theory now is that some of the traces in the PCB are broken or something, and that slapping/bending it slightly re-aligns them for a bit, but ultimately it won't work.

Still haven't heard anything from Play-Asia btw.

Took 4 tries. Beat Nightmare on Elm Street again. woo... You know that feeling you get when you've beaten a game multiple times and then it just mercilessly kicks your ass?
